I went through phases with Charlie Rose. Kind of hot and cold. But like Joe Rogan, today, he got great guests and had an open format show. It was just kind of tedious getting through Charlie's questions, sometimes. I always did like the more open format late at night that you could never fit between the commercials the rest of the day.
Love the 50th anniversary edition. His son wrote an introduction. Writers were not respected in Hollywood. The godfather was his mother. Just a miracle of a story written out of his basement.
Check out Puzo's short stories and his early novels. The man had a very strong voice. Never went to college. He grew up in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan, went into the Army Air Corps, came out and wrote. Such a natural talent.
Mr Puzo - As a 11 years old in 🇨🇺 Cuba I watched The Godfather.. Something magical happened to me... I had read the book more than 50 times..I seen the movie more than 100 times..I been to The Godfather house in Staten Island many times. I own a brick from the house. The Godfather is a classic. Five thousand years from now , The Vatican going to talk about this book....God bless your soul. God bless the USA.PS- was Fidel Castro favorite movie...Thanks.

It's a shame The Last Don became a TV miniseries rather than being given the theatrical treatment. It was okay but it's a story that deserves bigger better production.
Great imaginations make great writers they can make scenes dialogue history drama emotion come alive But it's their understanding of passions conflict crescendos and denouements that prove their intellect because others can live vicariously through the painting theyve created.
Fools Die: I think this is one of the best books I have ever read in my life. Honestly, It took me a few months to read. It is written with so dense thoughts encompassed in every sentence, that one could not just flip the pages. Every word in this book matters, and every sentence was given a deep thought by the author. Very rich book, as the life itself. I would not even consider this book as a novel, I would rather consider it being a book of life. Gambling world and the world of writers and the moviemakers are twisted in a perfectly tailored life path of the Book’s main hero - Merlyn. I found in this book so many reflections of my own life, and so much wisdom of power games that people play. It is a pleasure (and it requires efforts, too) to read, an absolute standout in literature from other peer writers of Mario Puzo’s time. I was fascinated how intelligent dialogues and life efforts are set up. Descriptions of thoughts of main characters are not excessive and deep enough to understand true emotions, which people feel in various circumstances. A very vivid book, a book of wisdom that encourages readers to live their lives in full. To leave “not only length of the life, but also the width of it”. Eduard Novoselov
Mario Puzo looks exactly like Mario Puzo. If someone said "hey, that guy over there, that's Jerry Kessler" or "He's Brandon Taylor", I'd say "No, he looks like Mario Puzo to me."
He said he was lazy but he is not dumb . Though it took a long time to get a payday. The system abuses writers so either write for pleasure or delay gratification. Some are just lucky with timing others are recognized post mortem . And some are ruined by editors or businessmen who have no aesthetic sensibilities.
I can’t get enough of behind-the-scenes videos on The Godfather. I read Mario Puzo’s book when I was in high school and loved it but it’s the movie that’s seared into my memory - not the book. I wonder if even the greatest books can’t compete with a great movie version due to the way we process information. I guess humans are far more compelled by visual and auditory information than the written word. As an aside, every time I see an old Charlie Rose interview I shake my head in dismay over the secret side of his life as a sexual predator that ended his career. Why are so many of these people sick? I don’t get it.
Puzo > Martin by a mile. Martin is good, but Puzo's work is timeless. It's thrilling, it's charming, it's witty, it's art. The man was a brilliant storyteller. I highly recommend The Sicilian. You're gonna love it.
ABOUT MARIO PUZO "Mario Gianluigi Puzo was born in 1920 in Manhattan into a poor family who had emigrated from Campania, Italy. After military service in Germany during the Second World War, he studied at the New School for Social Research and at Columbia University in New York, and wrote stories for men’s pulp magazines. His first two novels (published in 1955 and 1965) achieved critical acclaim but not financial success, and Puzo wanted to write something with popular appeal in order to support his family of five children. The result was The Godfather (1969), which sold 21 million copies worldwide." www.foliosociety.com/row
I sincerely believe mafiosi love this author. Mario Puzo took their odyssey in America and related it back to them with uncommon insight and eloquence. As for their initial efforts to kill this book and the film which adapted it, that only served to publicize it.
"It started out as a book about Hollywood then Vegas crept in, then the mafia crept in" ..........it was all just an accident......BUT A GREAT ONE!!!!!
True love is a distraction for any ambitious man who is on his road to wealth... no marriage could be put in check 100% of the time... love and marriage is catastrophe for a man trying to build wealth.
Great comment👍🏼 Nowadays the interview has gotta by done by some unfunny comic, who’s trying to crack shitty jokes every two seconds, to make the studio audience laugh like he’s told the funniest joke they have ever heard. I agree you need comedy in your life, but you also need conversations like this too.
Whenever there is a book adapted for tv or the movies the book is always better than the onscreen version. The Godfather is the exception to that rule. The movie is much better than the book in my opinion
They're both great authors but Puzo wrote about romantic figures within Romantic Fiction as he once put it. Pileggi writes True Crime which is about scummy criminals. Very different sides of the spectrum.
What a shame (but no surprise) that Paramount (and Robert Evans) screwed Mario Puzo over for $50,000...owning all he writes and wrote about the Godfather, who's films went on to make about 1 billion dollars. Sad.
He got his literary revenge in Omerta, describing in detail how cutthroat Hollywood is. When the protagonist gets screwed over by producers and money men, he doesn't fight them. But each of them comes to a bad end very quickly, seemingly at random.

RIP Mario Puzo (October 15, 1920 - July 2, 1999), aged 78

Love the 50th anniversary edition. His son wrote an introduction. Writers were not respected in Hollywood. The godfather was his mother. Just a miracle of a story written out of his basement.
Yes. He deals with his mother and family in the Fortunate Pilgrim. Great, great read. The Godfather stems from stories his mother told him.
Man, what a classy interview for such a great author.
The Godfather is the best movie ever. Stayed very close to Mario’s novel.❤️
I totally agree!!!
Well, Mario did co-write the screenplay........
Try his The Fortunate Pilgrim. About his family. A novel
One of the greatest authors of our time
uh, NO. he provided one of the greatest SPRINGBOARDS of our time with his source novel for the godfather. not the same thing.
Lol no faaaaar from it

A great novel... I read it twice and Mario Puzo is a genius.
I listen to the audiobook often. Very well written. Amazing story (The Godfather)

I read this book and it was brilliant
I did also. Got the audio as well.
i know its brilliant and i havent even read it yet
Yes, easily his best next to The Godfather.
It's a shame The Last Don became a TV miniseries rather than being given the theatrical treatment. It was okay but it's a story that deserves bigger better production.
If it was done now at a current HBO like level it would be the ideal format for it, but yeah, back then not so much.
@@WallKenshiro Yeah. Commercial t.v. has to censor too much. But I'm with you on extended formats for a decent treatment of any good novel.

I love his personality and perspective 😂 Brilliant 🎉🎉🎉
Say what you will about Rose, who seems to annoy some people, but I find his interviewing style to be top-notch and this video proves it.
I was looking for his name cause i thought he was a bright contrast to Mario Puzo and how he admires him. Good interview
One of the greatest
I just wish he didn't rape all those women verbally
wrong way wrong
He dominates a few, but he's usually great.
Big love and respect mario puzo for his beautiful movie

Although Clemenza’s line was improvised for the film. I can hear him say, “Forget the Net. Go for the Gross”

Love the last don. It is as good as the godfather
Mario putzo looks like a die hard mafia boss.
I've always enjoyed Rose's interviews; it's a darn shame he's turned-out to be such a nightmare in his relations with women.

The last Don is a very good read.
Wonderful man and interview. Too bad we have to suffer thru Charlie Rose doing it.
The brilliant book he wrote was somewhat based on the history of the Gambino clan
Such a great movie
If only they had switched out Sofia Coppola and gotten Robert Duvall on board, GF3 could have been a truly great film instead of merely a good film.
I agree it could have been better with a couple of other characters back in, but it's still a great movie.
Youd have had to reign in Pacino as well. 90s Pacino is almost an entirely different person to early 70s Pacino
