A little updated comment to answer some faq. I used 4 yards of 1.5mm neoprene fabric in white 4 jars of permaset aqua ink paint. 300ml of black, white, yellow, and 1 liter of mid green. I would get some red next time for better skin tone mixing. I used my Singer heavy duty 4432 sewing machine I believe I used heavy duty thread I used a regular straight stitch for the small details on the fins, and a Straight Stretch Stitch for around the waist and for the whole side seams where it would pull the most after 3 years, the colors are still very good except for a couple of spots in the back where it rubs if I sit on a rock or something. the heels, the tips of the monofin, and the butt. In the future I would dye the whole tail the lightest color and then paint over it. hopefully avoiding the white from showing through in the future. This tail fits the Adult mermaid linden monofin body glove in blue, and the finis luna monofin medium enchanting emerald.
As someone who is terrible at digital art but loves hands on sewing and painting, this video was extremely useful. I had a mermaid tail when I was younger that was well loved and the mono fin broke and the tails colors faded. Now that I’m basically an adult, I still love mermaid tails and I really wanted to get one thats not super out of my price range. I finally just gave up and decided I’d make my own as it’d be cheaper anyways. This video helped inspire me to start this project and design my next tail!
You need more subscribers, this was an incredibly useful video!! I’ve literally always wanted to own a tail but never had the money to (or found one) that I liked I’m going to try to make and design my own and I am so so excited
Oh, this video was super helpful. I've been wanting to make and paint my own tail, because I've found it hard to find a maker who can do the type of style I want. Seeing how good this looks, and also getting some meassurements to base my own on really inspired me to take the plunge into making my own. It'll still be a while, since I'd need to save up quite a bit, but now I'm certain it will happen eventually :)
You did a fantastic job, I thought it was digitaly printed like one that you buy from courtney Mermaid or Mertailor, you're a fantastic artist absolutely amazing job, please do more tail tutorials!
This is so good I initially ignored it in my pre-diy research because I thought you had it digitally printed!! So happy I clicked! This tail is incredible 💖💖
This is perfect! I'm trying to make a siren outfit to go mermaiding in. I looked all over the internet for a premade siren set but alas no one has done so (at least I haven't found it during my searches). I swim in the ocean 90% of the time and would feel much safer if I could move my legs independently. Plus I burn very easily so I need my entire body to be covered. So I've decided to buy a spandex body suit to paint as well as sew up two neoprene fins that I can slide flippers into. Plus I thought it might be fun to add some decorative fins down the sides and back of the bodysuit. Maybe between the arms and torso too... Ooo plus hand fins! Maybe even a swim cap with a little fin. Anyway I really hope it works out cuz I have no idea how to digitally paint
That sounds awesome!!! I wish you luck. Also with the method I did, you don't have to digitally paint, I just did that so I could figure out what colors I wanted.
I am trying to design a safe scuba knit tail 😜🤯. Hard to wrap my brain around it. But I guess I just have to make a prototype and try... just wearing pants and a fin cover does seem safest. Have you tried a cheaper monofin, like maybe a linden, or a used higher priced one? Or maybe you just want to scissor kick and really like the fins that you have! It's going to be a really interesting Mer creature look! Especially with the hand fins, and full body with the cap, and things like that. Maybe you can figure out how to decorate the mask or other scuba gear too. I wonder if the effect will be like with those bionic robot sea creatures, and be completely accepted by the underwater fauna as a sea creature. But I hope it's not edible looking to sharks🤔
@@KKIcons for me personally I'm just going to use snorkeling fins and create neoprene fins to cover them, like how the the mermaid tails cover the monofin. I personally don't want to use a monofin because that'll be hard for me to swim in if there are any waves. I like to be able to scissor kick and easily walk in and out of the ocean. It's funny you say that about the sharks because I actually did research on what sharks are attracted to so that I could avoid those things. I decided that a ruddy red color with black or dark blue accents will be the best. Basically nothing with contrasting colors or sparkle. So it won't be the most photogenic of outfits but safety first. Good luck with your design! Yeah I feel ya, it's hard to really grasp the ins and outs until you start. Hopefully you won't have to make too many adjustments and everything will just work out for you :D
I absolutely loved this and thank you so much for making this. I handsewn a tail in 2018 and the fabric wasn't good enough. Now that I own a finfolk neopren tail I want to create more of my own. Thank you for this
I’ve been recently thinking about making myself a new Tail since mine have started to disintegrate, and this tutorial will be an amazing help when I finally get to doing it!
Has that hack been tested viable for this application? It has to not break down over time and stay resistant to pool chemicals and a lot of abrasion and active use. Will that cause a chemical reaction with any of the ingredients in the paint? Will it affect the Integrity of the paint film? As a possible alternative, Golden fluid acrylics use the fabric GAC additive (offhand I think the code is 900 but I would have to check) that softens it and thins it, helps it adhere to the fabric fibers I think? That company does a lot of research and testing. I am following for more nerding out about paint here😉
Amazing video and its really helping me when making my own neoprene tail. BUT I was wondering, have you tried swimming with it? How was it? Comfort, fit, drag and so on. Would love to hear ❤️
Yes I have swam in it!!! I haven't had many opportunities to swim with it since I made it so i've only swam in it once so far x.x It was amazing though! I was a little too excited to swim and didn't get any videos, haha! I promise next time I'll document it though and post on here. honestly, it looked amazing in the water. I was worried that the long tendrils on the fluke would bend weird, but they flowed nicely. it did seem to drag slightly and felt like it was sliding down slightly, but only a half inch or so and never went too far. in the water it was incredibly buoyant. I could sink and rise as I wished and it was easy to float on my back. it was very heavy to lift myself out of the water though, because I'm not used to carrying so much wet cloth. The fins looked lovely. I was worried about the fins on my butt and calves not standing straight, but they looked great!
@@MaysoulRose omg that sounds amazing! so happy it went well! I am currently waiting for my fabric to arrive then I will make my own! thank you for replying! :D cant wait to see your tail in action!
Really helpful and informative video thank you! This actually seems like something i could do a couple years in the future once i can afford to buy a more high quality tail. I want to do a betta tail though, so i think ill have to find a thinner fabric on the fluke to get the desired effect in the water. Thanks again! :)
for the cost, prices might have changed since I made this tail in 2020. But here's about what I paid for everything: Paint: 4 jars of permaset aqua paint for about 46$ plus 20$ for shipping. Neoprene: 4 yards for about 40$ Monofin: The monofin I got on amazon is currently $57.99 so overall about 160$ I think. as for how to sew it skin tight. I just took in the sides bit by bit until it felt snug! putting on the tail, pinching the sides until it's snug to my legs, pinning, and then following the pins with the sewing machine. and repeat until it feels good! Trying to keep it even on both sides as I go and doing little bits at a time so I don't make it too small. for example, taking in an inch from both seams on the side when I need to make it 2 inches smaller. I would also use a base stitch with wider gaps between stitches so I used less thread. Then when it was comfortable, I would go down again with a normal stretch stitch! Hope this helps! I have the links to all the materials I used in the description.
A tip might be to try sewing clips. They dont poke like pins and are quick to put on and take off when fitting. I use them to pull my corset mock ups pretty tight, and they don't fly off as much as you would think. They make wider clips now that ought to work well. Also Walmart has the white plastic blanket clips that I use for everything. They could help you gather in and hold the fabric while you pin or clip. The clips lie flat and feed up to the machine well.
I love this video! How many yards did you purchase for your tail? And did you use a certain sewing stich or machine for the neoprene? And is using a thicker thread recommend for this material? Can't wait to see more of your creations! Thank you so much for posting such a great video! :)

Thank you! I hope you have fun!!! Unfortunately I do not, But I was able to swim in it recently (finally got a chance to swim literally a year after making it x.x) I'll try to get videos soon! It swam really well and looked super cool in the water! It's very buoyant as well.
