Pancakes. This is still helping in 2024. I rebuilt my trans but this is really the first time I really feel like I know what I'm looking at and my piston is about how yours looks after you modified it. I'm going to look at it again but I think I'm pretty close to it being correct.
I had the same issue last week and couldn't figure out why when I add weld it would give a longer reading. It didn't make sense. Thanks for clarifying.
Love your videos! And please correct me if I’m wrong. But I thought when you bumped in on the trans break, it was applying and releasing the direct clutches. in 1st gear, the low reverse, sprag will be holding with the band . Kinda like when you have the shifter in manual 1.
Torque the bolt on your tool to 55 in/lbs and check the depth ....forget about trying to feel any lockup - you only do that when trying to check the travel by using your hand to push the piston down and when doing that you have to turn the sun shaft and mainshaft both together clockwise, not the output shaft

So you were only stacked to the center support while checking the pin travel? If i’m stacked to cs and press all the way down on the band through the servo hole with a screw driver, the band tightens around the planet and stops it from moving, but the output shaft rotates freely. Don’t you need to stack up to the pump to properly check reverse band engagement?
Hi there I'm getting at you from San Diego California I got a 4L 80e 93 Chevy Silverado three-quarter ton just recently blew out my reverse gear on my truck driving on the freeway I I understand this is an opportunity to rebuild my I also would like to ask you what are good options recommendations to improve my transmission for a better shifting since I'm going to use this truck and I'll sleep for towing and hauling please get back to me with some decent recommendations and different kits shifted kids quest kids or any other performance kits or things that I can do or utilize while I'm in the due process saving money to go to my transmission guy to do all of these things I'm in the process of trying to research different things but I'm really not knowing what I'm doing or what I'm not really looking at or what I'm really trying to get the only thing that came to conclusion actually getting a clutch kit or rebuild kit from summit racing but even then I'm not sure it was right stuff hope to hear back machine from you soon I would appreciate it and I really like your videos
I do not get how the gap measurement between the servo cover and the servo piston translates into a servo rod length. I have an early model 4L80E that has the same servo rod you are using, but it is too long, and it did some damage to the low/reverse drum. Sonnax has an adjustable one for the early model 4L80E transmission that I am going to get because factory servo pins are no longer available. I just need to figure out how to measure for the correct the servo rod length.
@@christophersanders5007 That would be the max. If it's much larger than that the servo can bottom out in the case, or not have enough apply force to grab the drum.
@@BlaserBuilds OK, so I should set a little looser than that. Since I do not have a spare servo cover laying around to build one of those tools for checking it I will have to buy one.
@@christophersanders5007 use your hand and shove down on the piston or you can even use a long metal bar with a hole on one end and thead one of the piston cover bolts thru it - use it as a lever to push down on the piston, kinda like a tire bead breaker. Only 2 things that really matter, the bands can grip the carrier without the ends of the bands hitting each other and the servo can fully clamp the band down without bottoming
@@BlaserBuilds at wir. On a pull soft hit and only 10psi. 1.8 60ft trucks almost had 1.5a. It happened right as it shift 2nd was in that gear for like .5 seconds than it hit rev limiter

Good documentation, it's not easy to be precise and video. Thanks for putting the time in.

Pancakes, BTW that Volvo looks very interesting, how about a video with some of the details, thanks a lot
I've done the same thing before cut a piston too short had to weld two clutches together lol.
So is it OK to do with the trans still in vehicle. Or does it have to be broken down farther than the valvebody and reverse servo
But I like French toast.
Great info.
Looking at buying a silverado cheap.
4l80 with no reverse.
Im hoping it’s the pin that is worn.
Do you have the part number of the pins used on your friends car?

you are supposed to turn the sun gear shaft AND the mainshaft clockwise and simultaneous not the output

You're measuring pin travel distance. If the pin is too short the gap will be larger, and travel can max our before band is fully applied.
@@BlaserBuilds You mention .120 of an inch. Is that the gap measurement you need to have where the servo pin is engaging the reverse band properly?
@@christophersanders5007 That would be the max. If it's much larger than that the servo can bottom out in the case, or not have enough apply force to grab the drum.
