When I am speaking I use the word “um” a lot as a filler word. I used to have a pretty bad stutter. My brain and mouth didn’t move at the same speed. So while I’m waiting for my brain to process what I’m trying to say I will fill in with “um” it prevents a stutter which prevents embarrassment which prevent frustration which prevents a Debbie meltdown. Nobody wants a Debbie meltdown. They aren’t pretty.
