Jennifer and Mark discuss the interaction between Chronic Mental Illness and Acquired Brain Injury .
In this video, Jennifer and Mark discuss how pre-existing mental illness may interact with acquired brain injury. Many people with ABI have a history of pre-existing chronic mental illness and we discuss how pre-existing mental illness may increase the likelihood of ABI and how it may effect symptoms of disorders such as schizophrenia, manic-depressive disorder, anxiety, and depression.
Acquired Brain Injury may also increase the chances of a person experiencing mental illness such as Post-Traumatic Psychosis, Clinical Depression Due to Medical Condition , (Acquired Brain Injury) Personality Change Due To Medical Condition (Acquired Brain Injury) or other mental health disorders such as ADD/ADHD and ASD or intellectual disabilities...although they carry different taxonomic titles due to specific age requirements. The symptoms may be the same, but if they are onset after 18, they may be labeled as something else.
We have a variety of episodes dedicated to mental health which describe different disorders and how Acquired Brain Injury effects people with mental illness and the neuropsychiatric effects of ABI and medications and psychological and somatic treatments of mental illness associated with Acquired Brain Injury.
Special Thanks to Jennifer for her help, despite not feeling up to snuff.

    I would be careful with Depakote/Valproic-Acid. I took in some years ago, only to incur injury to the liver as a result. Although i was fortunate to have recovered from the incident, the literature suggests that in many cases the pathology once instigated can become progressive, even resulting in death. So please be attentive. Also, Lamictal appears to be associated with the potential for a severe skin reaction, so I would also recommend caution with this medication as well, should it come into consideration. As regards to anti-convulsants, the most common and natural of all that is used in veterinary medicine is potassium bromide. I take this often, along with lithium. however the problem lf intermittent explosive disorder, per the DSM label, persists, particularly in response to any uptick in life stressors. very grateful for the advice in this video. anger management, though of value, is highly over-rated and as indicated in many animal models including our very own pets, the problem can be intrasigent and therefore often either under-treated or mistreated. those of us afflicted risk induction into situations of involuntary confinement which given the prevailing socio-economic factors can result in premature death via disposession and homelessness. I myself am now seeking to upgrade my own treatment protocols with regard to the anger issue as the matter of personal safety is of the utmost importance. Cigerrettes used to be my go-to drug, but since I quit the need to find a better, pharmacological substitute has become very evident. painfully so.

    Thank you for posting this video. My son suffered from generalizing seizure disorder that were resistant to medication from 5 YO to 12 YO. At 15 suffered a sudden cognitive decline and I had him tested at the University of Miami CARD. He was diagnosed with frontal lobe damage. His MRI also showed a reduction in the size of his left temporal lobe. Everything you describe, explains his challenges. He was never able to read or write as he had no access to phonetic memory as well. At 21 he began hearing voices and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He became aggressive with me. I had no other option than to place him in housing where he could receive 24/7 care and supervision. I have experienced stages of frustration, anguish, anger, and helplessness, trying to get him an education, medical care, psychiatric, therapy and employment supports. I would settle for anything that makes him feel worthy. It is very difficult to find a community that understands our struggles. If you know of any center that works with these patients, can you please share that information?

      Long term neuropsychiatric care for patients with acquired brain injury is difficult to find…there are some places that do provide long term care for people with Traumatic Brain Injury, but I’m unaware of any that provide direct care for people with concomitant neuropsychiatric deficits such as aggressive behavior…honestly this is exactly what I’d like to see established…because neuropsychiatric disorders are what make recovery so challenging…I suspect you may find an answer by contacting a rehabilitation medicine physician or neuropsychiatrist or Brain Injury Medicine physician…unfortunately only recently, as in this year has acquired brain injury been recognized by Medicare/Medicaid as a “chronic condition” and warranted funding for chronic treatment. This is all I can think of at the moment. If I think of something else, I’ll let you know… prayers for more answers

      There isn't much research in the neurology or neuropsychology or rehabilitation journals more than what we've mentioned. We do try to avoid speculation. Havana Syndrome is an area of much controversy in medical circles with some speculating its a case of MPI (Mass Psychogenic Illness) which I do find fascinating and some suggesting a brain infection and others suggesting deliberate or accidental chemical or toxic exposure, and others suggesting a high energy weapon. Honestly, any of these are possible or something no one has considered. Till we know more, other than a video briefly talking about these possibilities, I can't say much more about it.

Grandmal seizures stopped in grade school still have pitimal, Reading and spelling comprehension disabilities, Strabismus esotropia intermittent unilateral, sensory issues, central auditory (I lose words with too much background noise), migraines, depression and anxiety. By the time I was 25 my MRI didn't show the damage but the lasting effects are still there 4 decades later. I don't take any allopathic meds anymore. I was assaulted in 2012. I had my head stomped on after being knocked out from behind by a king hit behind my right ear. When I came too, there was a guy sitting on my legs holding me up with one hand while repeatedly punching me in the face. I remember just seeing flashes. Each flash was a punch to the face. Basal skull fractures, fracture through the cribriform plate of the ethmoid, lateral to the crista galli, permitting leak of CSF fluid. The perpendicular plate, vomer, and nasal bone were fractured. 13 years later I have been diagnosed with PTSD. A targeted MRI by a neuropsychogist reveled neuro inflammation. He perscribed minocycline 100mgs twice daily to target microglial inflammatory reactivity. My GP has no experience treating neuro inflammation. Is there anything else you might recomend I ask my GP to look into that could be of benifit in treatment of neuro inflammation? I take meletonin to help with sleep issues due to PTSD and my research has shown this to possibly be of some benifit due to its anti inflammatory effects but perhaps not at the dose im taking for sleep? Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you for making your videos available to all. That you share freely your vast knowledge and experience is greatly appreciated also.

    I was injured at age seven, almost killed in a suitcase bombing. I'm just starting to watch this at 2 AM and will finish watching later today. Two things: 1. I hope you will discuss the neurocognitive stall. 2. I'm not an expert, and do not wish to trample upon your work, but I had always wondered why, according to the GCS, I wasn't that badly injured. Yet, my life was ruined. According to my neurologist - and I was not surprised to learn this - the GCS is becoming discredited. It is, after all, fifty years old, and neurology has learned a great deal since 1974. My neurologist said that the presence of delirium, now called "post traumatic confusion," is a much more ominous indicator. I was in delirium for three days.

    • @marksmadhousemetaphysicalm2938
      @marksmadhousemetaphysicalm2938 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The GCS is a terrible method of categorizing TBIs…and certainly doesn’t reflect outcome…unfortunately, it’s still widely used by Emergency Physicians and Trauma Surgeons, who are primary gatekeepers…we do mention the fact that GCS is a poor system in other videos…but maybe we need to make a dedicated video…

      @@bobtaylor170 I’m just an editor for the channel…the presenter is a survivor and a brain injury specialist and was almost done with his PhD in neuropsychology (two semesters short) I think he said…before his first brain injury…also he is almost done with his neuropsychiatric nurse practitioner and he has his neuroscience nurse and psychiatric nurse certification and his Certified Brain Injury Specialist. He works as a Brain Injury Consultant for a hospital network. I’m an editor for the company he set up…for brain injury education. We are happy you’ve found us helpful. Weirdly enough we are both Marks with brain injury, although I’m not a medical person, but I’ve learned lots doing editing for the channel…😊 if you have any questions feel free to post them.
