Marriage age for girls was 12 and for boys it was 14. In the Middle Ages a fourteen year old could consent to a marriage, although as marriages were often arranged, they were often merely agreeing to marry whoever was chosen for them. Granted, noble woman often married in their latter teens and noble men often married in their mid to late twenties. You should not impose modern values on people a few centuries ago.
Thanks Claire 👸 Nice to branch out a bit while still remaining in the Tudor era 🏵️ Anne of Brittany, what a woman, what a life 👑 Poor Joan though. She did nothing wrong and did not deserve such treatment, Even after death 😢 I admire Joan's strength and defiance to her husband's plans and then how she retired gracefully 🙏
Anne of Brittany was such a fascinating and powerful woman. She tried so hard to keep her duchy independent but ultimately failed. I believe she may have had as many as 16 pregnancies , 7 by charles and 9 by Louis. With just two surviving daughters, one of whom the future queen Claude was very sickly and now believed to have had Downs Syndrome but I don't think that is 100% confirmed. I also find it so distasteful that so many royal tombs and bodies were destroyed due to The French Wars of Religion by the Huguenots, and then later during the French Revolution. Sad times. Thank you for this insight into the lives of Jeanne and Anne. I've always loved history and I have to admit that royal women's lives were far more interesting than the men's. And I am a bloke!! Mate lol
Thank you so much for these videos! It is so nice to be exposed to the events in other countries during this era. England was not the only country on the globe, and it is refreshing to learn what was happening elsewhere. Thank you again and take care.
Thanks for this! I really believe that all of these individuals meant well, but it is unfortunate that Jeanne was adversely affected, as a result.. very interesting that she became a saint..
As much as I enjoy the doings of the Tudors and their court in England, I'm really appreciating the expansion into the wider historical context of Europe at the time.
Imo the pope annulled the marriage because that king did not consent! You even said that. Henry viii did consent. That is why Henry could not divorce Catherine. Everyone knew that king did not consent. Everyone knew Henry did consent.
Henry didn't seek the annulment on those grounds though, he sought it on the grounds that the dispensation shouldn't have been granted because the marriage went against biblical law.
Wow, so much drama, so much more interesting than any soap opera! Thanks Claire ❤️
You're welcome 😊
I’ve always loved Ann of Britany. Henry used the case as justification to get rid of Katherine of Aragon.
Yes, he saw Louis get his annulment quite easily.
Not sure a fourteen year old can ‘agree’ to a marriage.
In that era, a 14 year old was considered an adult.
In those days a fourteen-year-old boy was considered an adult, but also, someone of his class was expected to have an arranged marriage.
Marriage age for girls was 12 and for boys it was 14.

Joan is definitely a woman to admire.
Thank you Claire for this interesting story. I feel so very sorry for the women (Queens or not) who were set aside by scheming husbands!
Yes, me too.

I have been reading all the books I can find on Anne of Brittany, what an interesting woman.
Yes, fascinating.
Another great video! Very interesting!
The scheming was endless!
Yes it was!
This was very interesting!
Another great video. What
they don't teach in school!
Yes! There are so many interesting stories to be found.
My head is spinning, I had a hard time following this tale. I can’t imagine living through all this intrigue. Thank you for sharing

I'm glad you enjoyed it, thank you!
@@laurabrowning7973 Agreed 💯
Anne and Louis were 1st cousins once removed
A Video about Anne de France would be great, she was an exceptional politician and regent!
I loved this story. Anne of Brittany is fascinating. I'm going to read about her.
Thanks so much Claire

Thank you!

You know Henry took a page from this guy’s book
Yes! It's certainly why Henry VIII thought there'd be no problem getting his first marriage annulled.
Thank you for this. So interesting. Very interested in Anne of Brittany.
Dangerous world indeed! The other day it was the serpent queen, and today there was a bit about a spider king😊

Renaissance wife swap! 😮
Yes!
Money helped the men (as usual) make things go their way with no thought to the women.
