Way back in my teen youth, feeling sorry for myself about a 'broken first love', my consoling father told me "There are plenty of fish in the sea" - without mention of meremaids. Think he was merely thinking of pretty landmaids.
Hard to believe anyone would mistake a dugong for a mermaid. And in fact many folk living by the sea or next to major rivers have stories about beauteous but deadly mermaids of some sort. So I'm going to say nope, except possibly in a poetical sense if you like? Moving gracefully like a maid, etc?
Were eye glasses invented yet? Sailors maybe couldn't see properly with bad vision 😂 I heard something today: How many Royal Cooks do you think were executed falsely because of FOOD ALLERGIES in Medieval Times 😱 that lands different.....!!
I am sure you wil find plenty of people willing to die on the molehill of 'no one had food allergies because they ate real food' 😂 Personally, I think that there were less alergies but also allergic children probaby died young, so it was rare for anyone to live long enough for their allergy to be recognised as such. It's sad to think of some little one made to drink milk every morning and being perpetually unwell and dying at 3 for "unknown" reasons. The same with allergies to other things, like bee stings, sunlight, dust, etc. I am now actually curious if we know of any famous people in history that a documented allergy of any kind.
This was quite a treat. I love hearing about these intrepid folks bent on exploration even if they chanced meeting up with ginormous beasts and half-human creatures 😊.
I’m glad Clair is doing “on this day in Tudor history” in 2025.
This video combined my love of Tudor history with my childhood love of mermaids 😅Thanks Claire, very interesting.

Sea cows...and months at sea. My father was in the US Navy during WW II...he said there were many mirages at sea.
Did I hear a kitty? 😄😍
I heard a pussycat too! 😻
very clearly on 5:41 🤭🤭
I´m also very happy to start my morning with Claire and ”on this day in Tudor history”
The cat at 5:41 caught me off guard lol 😺 🐈
Elizabeth I's great-great (?) grandmother, Jacquetta of Luxembourg, claimed to descend from a mermaid!

I suppose it depends on how long they've been at sea!
Very interesting ❤
The Manatee is endangered because the motor boat blades.
