    British ATC always sounds SO polite. Clear, and crisp directions. I’m guessing English pilots get a lot of IFR experience. 😎👍

      I wish. It was liek that here in SoCal. Van Nuys (KVNY) ATC are pricks. I remember my solo 3 years back and I asked them to repeat procedures. They then asked me if I had my CFI in the cockpit. I am a CFI now and still get salty about that haha.

    • @PlaneOldBen

      The paperwork before the flight is the Aircraft Technical Log. It includes the checks done on the aircraft at the start of the day called the A Check which records things such as fuel level and oil level.

    Hi Ben. Do I take it that you don't have such a thing as being able to land after closing time? After such a time at a controled field here in Australia, CTAF procedures are in effect. This just means that you do radio calls on a given frequentcy.

    • @PlaneOldBen
      @PlaneOldBen  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some airfields there are in the UK which offer that but very few! Theres no pilot controlled lighting either in the UK so it becomes quite limiting when dark and after 17:00.

    Really interested in training for my PPL. Had a trial flight some years ago and loved it but at the time wasn’t financially viable. Once you have qualified how does hiring of aircraft usually work. If I wanted to take my family somewhere for a day or weekend, do you pay for the duration of the hire or do you only actually pay for the hours actually flown?

    Really enjoyed this "day in the life" style video. More like this in the future would be fantastic but the editing process on these ones must be more lengthy. Possible stupid question from a non-pilot: If you are flying VFR can you go into cloud? You mentioned you were doing an IFR transit, but was your flight plan a VFR flight plan? And if so, how come you could fly through those clouds? I watch a few American flight VLOGS and they all say if you're flying VFR you must be 500ft from clouds - or something to that effect. Anyway, appreciate you having us along for the trip. Cheers, Andy.

    • @BlueLineSpeed
      @BlueLineSpeed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      c898dba; I hope you don't mind me shedding some light on your question. In the U.K. (Unlike the US) if you hold an Instrument rating "IR" or an IMC rating which is like a limited IR for the U.K, you may fly in IMC (Cloud) without a flight plan and without talking to ATC, though this is unadvised. An IFR flight plan is only required for flight in controlled airspace (Class A which requires a full IR) though can also be filed for any IFR or VFR flight. The start of class A airspace varies in altitude across the U.K. from ground level around Heathrow up to 19,500 in remote areas. In summary the nearer you are to a major airport the lower the controlled airspace will be.
      ATC deconfliction service (radar traffic separation) is advisable for IFR outside controlled airspace but the availability of deconfliction services depends upon controller workload and radar coverage which does not always cover areas outside controlled airspace due terrain or obstructions.

    • @c898dba
      @c898dba 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for that detailed and excellent explanation. It makes sense. I can see now the difference between flying in clouds in the UK and the US. I watch Jerry W, and the other day he said something like "I need to avoid that cloud as I'm still VFR". I wondered how Ben could fly through cloud while he was VFR and your explanation has made it all clear. Cheers! Andy.

      @BlueLineSpeed 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      c898dba You're very welcome. It seems we follow the same channels. Jerry W is very informative. I would also suggest "The Flying Reporter" as he makes very good content about flying in the U.K. He has also collaborated with Plane Old Ben in the past. All the best, BlueLineSpeed.
