Merle Saunders received an honorary doctorate from my college while I was there. He played this at graduation . It is beautiful recorded, but it was awesome in the true sense of the word to hear and watch him playing it live. He also gave really nice hugs, and was a truly lovely person.
Back in '88 my mom & I went to Maui, HI with some other family members. We went up to the top of Haleakala crater (by car) & spent several hours. Walking around up there so far above any of the clouds was like being on a whole different planet! Incredibly beautiful & surreal...I will never forget it!!
First heard this playing over the PA of a vintage clothing store in the Haight so very long ago. Had to ask, "what is this???" Bought it that day. Love it still.
I was fortunate enough to meet Merle and the Rainforest band backstage at a Philadelphia show following a trip they took down on the Amazon in South America and their experience there with tribal shamans and the much touted Ayahuasca Vision Vine.
@@randyhospodar8864 I met Merl Saunders, as a family member was his steady gf when he had his tragic stroke, and up to his death. Maybe I should clarify that not only did Merl encourage him to play, he did indeed teach Jerry. They were like brothers.
Fawnlee Greene .....no one downplays his role in helping Garcia regain his chops and desire following his coma, but Garcia was a well accomplished player well before that.
Epic... Life in a song....

I hear that. What a beautiful man. His son Tony is the same.

Not on Maui today, but I can enjoy Merl Saunders' Sunrise Over Haleakala instead.

Tears
5:58 and onward might be one of the most beautiful melodies ever written
Couldn't agree more!! Just sent this to a friend and said the part after 5:50 is absolutely gorgeous.
Jerry and Merle
And I really mean that:) WOW.
RIP Jerry Garcia. Can you believe what you created?
Merle taught him to play. Little known fact!
Fawnlee Greene ...somewhat misleading statement
