    I played in High School during the early 1980s. IMO all six of them young brothers was spot-on... and I'm so delighted to see them all use traditional style stick grip and control. Old school sound for sure! Nice.

    Awesome job to all of you! I watched the whole thing. I'm a bassist but I love drums.
    The way I see it, there's no point in criticizing these kids. Aren't they still in high school? A little encouragement goes a long way. Would you rather they not play drums and steal your car or knock you out instead?
    Regardless of how skilled they are, they are focused on something that will help them express their true selves. That's what's important. You don't have to be Buddy Rich or Tony Royster. Just be good enough to express yourself the way you want to.

    • @captain4053
      @captain4053 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those are real snare drums, the difference is they prefer a jazz drum set sound I'm guessing you're more into the core style sound of a snare drum. Which is fine everybody has their preference to sound and technique. But what you will find with show style drum lines as they prefer a drum set sound, not tonal bass drums not core style snares but a drum set feel. I used to get in debates with my high school band director all the time about tonal bass drums, like it's no longer a bass drum anymore if its tuned to high. But I eventually realize that he had his preference and I had mine didn't mean neither one of us was wrong.

    • @captain4053
      @captain4053 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** and that's your preference, in music there is no wrong or right way to do things it just what do you prefer. Me myself I have marched both Corp in high school and show style in college I prefer show style that's my preference. Both have different attributes to contribute to a student musician. Just like the music you hear on the radio there are different styles in the world country R&B jazz rap rock and roll and metal the question you have to ask yourself is which one you like better and if you find that one that you like better there's no need to talk down the other genres of music or forms just food for thought.

    • @xgalactic_minecraftpvp4318
      @xgalactic_minecraftpvp4318 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      itd depend on what type of drumming im doing for which snare drum ill use. If im marching im gonna use a really high tension snare with a lot of rebound and a clean quick sound. if i am jazz drumming, id use a different snare drum that is looser and better for jazz drumming.

    Y'all keep on drumming!
    To the rest: 1) Somebody walking into this competition with a corps-tuned snare would have been out of place just like walking into a DCI competition with one of these would be out of place. 2) Drumming is culture. Yes, people like that "old fashioned" stuff. Interesting that some corps groups use traditional grip (technically "wrong" on a flat drum) and even tilt the drum on the harness (antithetical to the harness' intent). Don't bash on one person's expression because it's not yours.
    I expect to hear one thing when I listen to a corps or corps influenced group and something else when I listen to those that are not. Celebrate it all!

    • @HEZEKYHWH
      @HEZEKYHWH  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks bro!!!!!!! Appreciate your kind words!!! And your knowledge. Many people (THAT ARE SUPPOSEDLY EXPERTS IN THESE COMMENTS) dont understand that Traditional grip was created because the drums were not leveled off and were tilted. SCV understands this concept as I have seen them play on tilted drums. Usually tilted so that the left hand is not at a disadvantage.... This is why match grip was even more prevalent when harnesses which kept the drums leveled off was utilized.

    • @HEZEKYHWH
      @HEZEKYHWH  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Oh no problem, but this is why Santa Clara VANGUARD played with the tilt. see 2005. Blue Stars just went to this as well 2014. Of course it can be done (traditional on a flat surface) as these kids marching DCI are some of the best in the country. But the actual technique of using the tilt was due to marching slings and the drums were not leveled off so traditional grip was used.
      The traditional styles was created because the drums were not leveled. Now that the drums are leveled due to harnesses one would think match would be more prevalent. as match grip can actually be more universally profitable as in playing in the pits with melodic instruments, tenors etc. But it's drumming and we embrace and love it all. PEACE!!!

    This isn't Drum Corps International or World Guard International. This style of marching drumline requires a different sound, not the crisp, sharp sound of kevlar weave snare heads. Don't bash these guys just because their style doesn't conform to DCI or WGI standards.

    All of the drums sound terrible. They need high tension heads. That's not what a marching snare is supposed to sound like.😂

      That's how they suppose to sound with traditional marching style.

      Its traditional drumming. Do you think goddamn civil war snares sounded like DCI tuning??? Did they teach you guys anything about drumming? There were no kevlar heads.
