And this one only took me about a weekend instead of weeks 💀 Also if you encountered the bug in v1.0.0 where the navigation wouldn't work with custom prefixes, that has been fixed in the new v1.1.0
Holy shit this is one of the best cases of minor annoyance that no one finds dire enough to actually think about making a fix for but then somebody actually does, and it's a must download Thanks, this is absolutely amazing!
Thanks to joe also for keeping it open so not that somebody can do it better but at least if a dev like me would check with him first incorporate a snipet into compiled open code like a function thanks joe i would not steal i would chk first then snipet take care brother joe❤❤
Dude, the amount of times I've asked out loud in an empty room to microsoft _Why would I save that file in C:\windows\system, microsoft!?_ A Linux version of this would be a life savior for a lot of people new to it as well. Great work!
sorry that you feel that way, but program files and appdata are well known locations - almost every program installs here and saves config/other stuff here, to not disturb the user's folders
@@pu239 I think he was talking about another thing: you save a Word document, for example. And quickly press Save, thinking that it would save where you saved previous file. But instead it saves to another folder instead. It happens when you save too quickly and didn't pay attention ;-)
As someone who uses a lot of modding tools, this tool will be such a time saver! Thanks, Joe! Also, one suggestion I would make would be to add profiles to the program, and in each profile, you can have a list of 10 or so saved paths.
This is awesome, a suggestion that would really make me love this would be to have the ability to have “favorite paths” of frequently used paths. Rarely do I keep explorer open with multiple tabs.
This is awesome! Thanks! Would love a setting where i could add a specific path(s) as "presets" for common locations I might use often, and they would show up in a new section in the pop-up menu.
if you know a little coding, you can easily use the AHK version and insert the needed paths into the code. if you know a little better about coding, you can easily extend it to load in a seperate file with paths that should be loaded. if you dont know how to do any of this, i may be able to assist if i got time.
Search for a program called "Quick Pop Menu" *It's old but still works The following is not a pop-menu but it may be close. On(Windows 10) *not sure on Windows 11 1. create a folder in your desktop (Call it something like Main) 2. Make shortcuts of the main folders or programs you want to use and copy the shortcuts to this folder. 3. On the taskbar, right click and move your mouse over Toolbars and choose New toolbar... It will open a window that asks you to choose the folder you want to add. Choose your shortcuts folder Now the folder will be pinned to the taskbar, and you can easily choose any of the shortcuts you put in that folder. You can even add subfolders of shortcuts
Your "path bar" that you think is missing is there, it's just pulling double duty and hiding in the "filename" box, because if you paste the path you want to go to into the filename box and press enter/return -- it will jump to that location.
@Gigaheart If you actually don't know then go to the playlist section of his channel, scroll down to the end and you'll find a playlist named "Joke Tech Videos" with 116 videos. That should tell you all you need to know.
@@Gigaheart All his videos were fake up until August 2016. He used to do stuff like "How to Upgrade from PS3 to PS4 for free" and "How to Double Your Internet Speed for Free".
Sounds great, but why do I have to have the folder open in the background? :D Why can't we save paths that we always want to show up? That would make it infinitely more useful.
Thanks man! This tool is a lifesaver. Whenever we need to upload anything windows is always so frustrating. It sometimes remembers the last location, othertimes it defaults to Documents
Okay... You know that Vince Mcmahon Meme? Where he gets more progressively into something he sees? That was literally me as you were showing the kinda menus it works on.
Listary already has a similar feature. When Open/Save as window pops up, just switch to an opened folder you want to locate and switch back and it will automatically jump to the path you just headed to.
This is brilliant. Some of the best software I've ever used is freeware with a simple idea that just makes life easier. The kind that makes you think "why did no one think to do this sooner???"
OMG as someone who uses the file explorer A Lot and Photoshop this is a common theme so this tool will get great use from me Thank you Theo Amazing content as always...
Great script! It would be interesting if you could add support for more 3rd party apps, like VS Code, Explorer++, and other IDEs that support opening folders/projects in them and file managers.
Man, that intro with all the folders was how I feel every time I save something. I use my Data drive (D:) for storage nowadays, as my C: has acquired so many programs, it's down to 50GB left, and I want to save that for cache, programs, and what not. My Data drive isn't very well organized. (yet)
What a game changer! Could have used this so much literally a day ago when doing a tedious workflow exporting files where the program would switch back to ITS working directory, not where I just exported to. Also introduced me to Directory Opus - looks awesome, going to be trying that out for a while.
Wow that's really nice. A great addition would be to have (in 'settings') some known fixed pre-set paths, maybe 5 listed in a non-expanded icon that shows in the list as 'Presets' and a single click will expand it and another click to select the known path. This makes it possible to have a selection for paths where windows are not open or a path to a sdcard or thumb drive that is plugged in or users home dir or whatever. My home dir is on the desktop in a folder called MyStuff hehe! But a lot of people just throw stuff on the desktop which isn't easy to open since the actual 'Desktop' folder is buried deep so having that as a pre-set will allow just saving to desktop easily, especially with those earlier dialogs that don't show the quick-access folders. Please please please add my suggestion. I'm watching for the next version with this feature added :-)
This is pretty cool. I made something vaguely similar a few years back for filing video files, where I could right-click selected .mkv/.mp4/.avi etc. files and get an expanding context menu of my movie and tv episode folders, to move new downloads to where they should go. Really helpful when you download a few hundred TV episodes from different shows and seasons and don't have to navigate around the computer to organise them all.
I could have used this back in the xp days. I got used to navigating all the different ways of open/save dialog boxes. I was going to leave a comment about how I used to just type out or copy paste in the file directory, but you included that in the video so I don't need to. Thanks for making windows that much better. now hopefully the linux guys watch this video and include the functionality in the various myriad file browsers they have.
2:10 You can actually just paste the path in the file name box and press enter to navigate to it. But it seems really useful and I will try to use this in the future!
Holy shit, this is REALLY good. Downloading immediately. Edit: wont open, says "COULD NOT CLOSE THE RPEVIOUS INSTANCE OF THIS SCRIPT. KEEP WAIITNG?" and nothing else.
Hm are you using the exe or .ahk version? I've had Autohotkey act up sometimes, not sure if it happens on the exe version too, which is really the same thing except the interpreter is built into the file.
@@ThioJoe i have the same issue using the exe Edit: nvm it was simply already installed. I expected to get a notif or something for it to tell me, that it was installed.
Photoshop still uses the method that wont let you copy paste the path and its really painfull to navigate files to save single thing😢. This is amazing, thank you, its really helpful
2:05 actually, there is. That bottom-section where you input the file-name? You can copy-paste the path into that and hit Enter - you'll warp there. 4:52 you should be able to run it - AHK will kill the older instance in my experience.
