I did an entire weekend bushcraft film shoot... only to find out when I got back that EVERY wide shot was out of focus... managed to save some of it, but luckily 70% of the shots were telephoto but then it was so obvious the difference between the soft wide shots and the crisp tight shots... basically, not something I really want to repeat ever! And now there’s no need to! Fixed beautifully. This video’s version of the method switched to the 60i format which wasn’t something I did last time I did the back focus adjustment. Thanks for the upload! ;)
Thanks AbelCine!!! Both of our Ex-1's needed it done around the same time. Our Ex-3 and 350 have never needed it redone since out of the box. Great tips-thanks for posting!!! Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Video thanks you!!!
Hi, thank you for the info. However, this method didn’t work for me with my first generation EX1. A couple of meters was way too close to do a proper auto backfocus adjustment. De wide image was still totally out of focus. Eventually I just went outside and used a building about 100 meters away as a focus-point. Finally a sharp close and wide object! Don’t know, if this was a very “professional” way to do it, but it gave me way better results.
The object itself doesn't really matter as long as it creates enough contrast. I can't speak for the automated Sony-stuff (my camera's and lenses can only do this manually) but if I'm not able to use a Siemens starchart as I don't have one with me or I don't have a person to hold it, I will usually turn to a brick wall. These will provide excellent contrast between the bricks and mortar to adjust backfocus to.
I'm having problem zooming in on my sony ex 3. When I do slow zoom it looks like shaking/ skipping frames. Don't know what's wrong, it never happened before...please help
Misbah. This is a common complaint, because the zoom motor on the EX3 just isn't very smooth. You can have the lens serviced by Sony to improve performance.

That's possibly the worst explanation I've ever heard! 4 minutes of talking utter crap before telling us anything abt the back focus! You need to go back to presenting school!
I don’t know how many times I’ve tuned into this video. I’m still using it after all these years. Greatly appreciated.
Thank you for the kind words and we're so happy you've found this video helpful!

Adjusting the EX1R; You need to put the gain on H and LCD.B.Light to off before you can access the service menu.

Thank you for watching Andy shipside's back focus adjustment video and that help me fixed my EX3 Camera
hi thanks for this. great video. does the chart have to be a certain size?
Apologies for the late response! The smallest size I would go is letter-size. - Ian
On my EX-1 even after doing this procedure my ND1 and ND clear are still terribly out of focus / backfocus
We found you can be as close as 4 feet from the target. Sony recommends 8 feet though.
where in the camera menu do you find the back focus barton on an ex1r?
sabe como habilito o ajuste na ex3? ele aparece desabilitado.
Any way to do this without the servo? Manual back focus?

@gollum2323 Glad you found it helpful! :)
To access the EX1 hidden menus press the menu, menu wheel and cancel buttons at the same time.
AbelCine deleted my comments where I explained my wide shots are still out of focus even after following this procedure to a tee.
