  • We figured if we're gonna ask y'all to submit songs and make videos for the Gems In The Rough 2022 contest, us on the GemsOnVHS team might as well take part, too. If us amateurs can do it, so can you! It gives us the opportunity to demonstrate how these Gold Tone instrument prizes sound as well, so there's that. Don't worry, we won't be in the running to win. But there's still a couple days to enter so that you can. Thanks to Reeve Powers for playing with me, and thanks to Gold Tone for supplying the tools!
For the second year in a row, we're featuring a Fred Eaglesmith song. This one's "Cigarette Machine" from the album 6Volts. Check out the full album

Anthony also has this one on Spotify.

Join the #GemsInTheRough2022 contest. Submissions close March 16 at 11:59pm CST this year.

Thanks, Gold Tone for supporting our contest.
We're playing the PBR: Paul Beard Signature-Series Roundneck Resonator Guitar

My best boy Thor passed this afternoon. Cancer up and down his throat. Tonight I’m smoking a J and hitting the bong is his honor to this song. He loved folk music and used to howl at the moon with me and lay by my side as I stair at the stars from my lawn chair on the shop patio. Thor buddy, I found the best song for us. Rest easy up there biggie I’ll look for you first.

My wife and I have called you Lil' Gem since the obscure early days. Thought you deserved to know. Its a term of endearment. You're a fantastic musician man. Keep on doing literally everything you're doing. You've done more for folk and underrepresented artists than most people ever will. Just awesome.

That was lovely Anthony, great job, really enjoyed this. Working on my GitR entry atm, so seeing the instruments was a nice extra as well!
Chords and lyrics below as always folks. Note you have to tune your guitar down to D tuning, Banjo would be in standard open G.
D tuning (2 half steps down), no Capo
    Intro G D Am C x2
    Verses G / D / Am / C x2
    Chorus G D / Am C / G D / Am C / Am C
    Interlude G D Am C x2
    [Intro]
    [Verse 1]
    Stumbling past your house baby
    At the break of day
I thought I saw your silhouette
    Dancing cross the shade
And I went down to the mission
    Called and called your name
Till an angel with a face like yours
    Came and let me in
    [Chorus]
I thought I saw your reflection in a cigarette machine
In a bottle in the gutter, on a window in a street
In a storefront in a picture, on an old broken TV
I swear it was you staring back at me
I swear it was you staring back at me
    [Interlude]
    [Verse 2]
    I heard soldiers' voices
    Down by the city gate
There were junkies lying on the ground
    They made me look away
And I spilled you on a mirror
And I chopped you into lines
And over some old kitchen sink
I swore I'd let you die
    [Chorus]
I thought I saw your reflection in a cigarette machine
In a bottle in the gutter, on a window in a street
In a storefront in a picture, on an old broken TV
I swear it was you staring back at me
I swear it was you staring back at me
    [Interlude]
    [Verse 3]
Well old radios and broken mirrors
    And dogeared things I read
    Worn out movie stars
    In faded limousines
I battled through my own charades
    Of coffee cups and clowns
I can't keep up with parades
    Cause I keep falling down
    [Chorus]
I thought I saw your reflection in a cigarette machine
In a bottle in the gutter, on a window in a street
In a storefront in a picture, on an old broken TV
I swear it was you staring back at me
I swear it was you staring back at me

    Thanks so much
    Anthony
You ve made my life better
I spent most of my life locked up
    When I finally woke up
    I was all alone
    With nothing
Now I have a room and music
    Sweet sweet music
I gave up on new music till I found gems and you
    God bless you son
