  • Got to love a game that isn't hard to learn or teach, but gives the players plenty to think about when it comes to strategies, tactics and other decisions. There's way more than 10 and ranking this was tricky, so just think of this as 10 great games that meet the definition.

      @@BrentMulvey You're welcome! It always bothers me when there's no timestamps on top ten lists like this because I often want to skip past certain items that I'm already very familiar with (on this list, Splendor, for example), so I figured this may be helpful for someone. Glad it was!

    I’m so happy to see that you gave San Juan some love in this list. I can teach San Juan in just under 10 minutes to people that haven’t played modern games before and 1/2 that time for seasoned gamers. I have brought many people to the hobby with this game because it’s a little more complex that your typical Gateway game but the depth of play grows as you play it.
    I think Sentinels of the Multiverse to be a little too fiddly for this list.
    My choices:
    A game of Thrones: Hand of the King
    Between two Cities
    Custom Heroes
    Cryptid
    Ethnos
    Gizmos

    San Juan

    I don't normally comment on youtube videos but I felt compelled to add these as this seems super useful and you seemed quite against doing so just to make users watch the entirety of the video. My curiosity was peaked by the premise of this video (which is great) and I was looking forward to getting such a list of game recommendations but I don't have nor would I want to spend 45 minutes just to learn about ten games. I appreciate your in-depth commentary about each game but hope that you consider adding timestamps in the future to your videos. I also echo another viewers comment about mentioning the name of the game immediately after the countdown graphic and then going into the context as to why you like it, what games it's similar to, etc. You shouldn't hamstring your users and force them to watch your videos just because they like the premise of your content. If adding these timestamps and the list of games in the description makes your video pointless (as you say), that means your commentary isn't very interesting. Anyways, I appreciate the effort in putting together these recommendations but hope you'll take this feedback well. Look forward to more recommendations in the future.

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you and I appreciate the feedback. I much prefer a timestamp where it's the number and the time so it avoids spoilers. It's time consuming to do timestamps on top of the normal upload, but if there's a fast way then maybe I can try to do basic number stamps - it's just a hassle having to manually do it 10 times on top of thumbnails, description, playlist link etc. It's easy for many to forget how much time you lose in just uploading a video. Failing that, someone usually does it anyway so fair play to them.
      I don't see 45 minutes as a long time though and I'm starting to get to around 35 min. Dice Tower Top 10's go to an hour and I'm hooked. Most will put TH-cam on in the background while doing something else or have it handsfree in the car. I'm actually less keen on a Top 10 where the guy does it in 15, 10 or 3 minutes because they've barely enough time to say "i like this because it looks nice, next we have........"
      I will demo trying to at least say the name quickly after the number reveal and see how that goes - I'm looking into designs for a different transition effect that will enable me to blend from one commentary straight into the cover of the next entry.

    My easy to teach but deeply strategic games include
    Aeon's End - kind of like Sentinels of the Multiverse but streamlined as far as effect and card interactions
    Dale of Merchants and Valley of the Kings - pretty simple to teach deckbuilders with deck deconstruction (Rahdo's term)
    Sagrada
    Capital Lux - part of the Lost Cities hand management
    Tides of Madness and Hanamikoji - very similar feeling games that have some depth
    Arboretum
    Space Hulk Death Angel
    Suburbia
    Friday
    Quantum - easy to teach the basics but we have had some intense games of this

      I would definitely add Concordia. The rules actually describe the gameplay with a single sentence - it's not easy to beat this when writing game manuals ;) And winning requires a lot of planning and cunning.
      It's a wonderful game too (building up your empire fills with satisfaction) and it looks nice! Not least beacause it's an actual board game with a map and pieces. not just a bunch of cards being thrown around.
      On the other hand I found San Juan, 7 Wonders and the game with Geishas really simplistic, with no single decision fun, or exciting, or compelling. Just throwing cards around with little to no emotion until someone meets winning criteria. With my girlfriend we actually crashed the Geishas, with an absurd numer of rounds of pushing and pulling until we finally decided that it is not a good idea to continue a game which isn't exciting, drags on indefinitely and makes little sense to boot ;]

  • @aronalber9107
    @aronalber9107 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Completely agree with Hanamikoji. Haven't played any of the others you mentioned, but I would definitely have Raptor on my list. I wouldn't say that it's fiddly to teach to new players at all. In fact, it was one of the very first games we ever bought; we were able to pick it up easily because of the tightness and elegance of the design. It's definitely one of those games where the depth of the game reveals itself over time as you familiarize yourself with the actions on the cards. Thankfully the player aids are really well done. But even without that, a new player who isn't that familiar with all the action cards can just worry about the numbers by reasoning through whether to go high for the action points or low for the action on the card. What cards does my opponent have left in their deck? Does my opponent need to go high or low? Should I try to anticipate them and frustrate their plans or carry out my own plans? What's the lowest/highest possible card I can play and still get the outcome I want? Love, love, love this game. Doesn't hurt that the theme really makes a lot of since with the mechanics and is basically dinosaur chess.

      Raptor i find frequently confuses new players because of all the actions you can do.

    Love Photosynthesis. It's my favorite game currently.
    Thinking about this category, almost any abstract strategy game could make your list. Even Chess is a simple game with strategic depth. Along that line, I'd add Hive to my top 10, along with Azul and Sagrada. All three abstract and/or puzzle-like with simple rules, but lots of choice and strategy to think about. And I'd put Carcassonne in as well, even though it's less abstract. It's a deeper game than most give credit for.

    • @TheBrokenMeeple

    Glad to see San Juan getting some love! But the lack of any Knizia games on here is criminal. While obvious games would be excluded like Tigris & Euphrates, Taj Mahal and Stephenson's Rocket: MANY of his games are brilliant because of the simplicity vs depth catagory: Battleline, Lost Cities, Through the Desert, Ingenious and Indigo are perfect examples of games that have 1 or 2 actions that you can do but just so much depth. The vast majority of his games I've played go like this: Play 1: "Oh, that's kinda neat". Play 2: "Oh! There is a lot more here than I thought". Play 3: "This game is so brilliant!".

    Chicago Express, or other Winsome titles. They are the epitome of simple yet deep. Chicago Express is an absolutely fantastic game about shared incentives (the rest is just manipulation).
    Blue Lagoon is ridiculously simple, yet it turns into an incredibly tense game with 4.
    Carcassonne at first is simple and there doesn't appear to be much there...then you keep playing and get to that deeper level and realize the greatness of the game. It took me a decade to finally try it again, but when i did i was impressed.

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd like to try Blue Lagoon. Carcassonne I feel only becomes high depth with multiple expansions but then complexity goes up also. Express I guess could fit the definition, sadly I find the game duller than ditchwater but it's difficult to win me over with train/stock games, their settings/theme do nothing for me.

    Go is the best example - rules are barely a sentence but takes a lifetime to master. Poker - Doesnt take long to learn the hand rankings and you can have an aid in front of you - loads of depth. Train games tend to have much more depth for very simple rules - Paris Connection is the simplest to start with but Chicago Express would fit too. Like someone else said almost any Knizia could fit on this list. Magic is very complex but has depth massively exceeding its complexity and if you go with a starter deck or Arena play its not hard to learn. Area control is often really simple rules but with real depth to the choices so Twilight Struggle with 2, Tammeney Hall with more....Isle of Skye was a good choice. Escape games are a good way of getting into the puzzle solving gameplay with very little rules overhead

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Trying to put in games other than the old classics we already know. Also when it comes to low complexity I'm not a fan of showing new players a giant reference sheet for abilities or iconography. 7 Wonders has all the symbology to absorb and I'd argue there isn't a ton of depth in Small World. Five Tribes is way too complex for the list compared to these, as good as that game is. Turn order, movement, genies, iconography galore, 5 tribes with unique powers, that's a fair amount to teach.

    • @Monkeyshaman
      @Monkeyshaman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was struck with how brilliant the comment was but; isn't it more an illusion of depth? ie the choice is place a stone or concede. While there being few actions you can't counter or recoup it's still relatively binary despite the impression of modality. Compared to a chess or even a carcassonne with multiple visible inroads and layers of wincons many only accessible to advanced players without actually removing the easy outs for inexperienced players.

    • @jonathanbush6197

      You might like to check out the board game Hex. I doubt 19x19 Hex is as deep as Go, but the rules of Hex, even including the pie rule, are significantly simpler. You can check out the rules on Wikipedia; search for hex board game. It's just a couple of paragraphs with one diagram. An indicator of the resulting complexity can be found at www.littlegolem.net/jsp/info/player_list.jsp?gtvar=hex_DEFAULT beginners start at 1500, and the top player is currently 2688, which in chess would correspond to grandmaster strength. And that's mostly from 13x13 games. So I claim that Hex has a higher "ratio" than Go.

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can understand the card games issue. Hive is fine, but abstract so that's for another list. Azul again is basically an abstract game so for another list perhaps though I think after a few games you've kind of absorbed all the depth it does have.

  • @grantfraser5430

    I agree with Splendor as a good choice. For this list, low complexity should outweigh high depth and super simple Splendor has more depth than is first realized. I have to be one to rag on you for Innovation though. Don't get me wrong, I think the game is great but I do think it's a miss on the low complexity side. I find a 4 hr game of Terraforming Mars (expansions and some AP) to be less confusing but would definitely not belong on this list. I might have included Azul, again more depth than is initially realized as sometimes it's about avoiding or forcing opponents into negative points. Other games I would suggest are Targi and though I wish I could suggest Castles of Burgundy, I think that also just misses on the low complexity side. Once used to it, it's a piece of cake but very high in depth. Just purchased new Castles of Tuscany which may be able to make the list though.

    Appreciate that list, but i don't really get, why you excluded abstract games, just because they all fit the criteria. It's like making a list about the best strategic games and excluding strategy games because they are all strategic. If no other game is able to fit the criteria better this should have been a list full of abstract games, because this is pretty much the point of many abstract games. I also think there are not enough top lists for abstract games on youtube. I would really appreciate if you do one in the future :D peace!

    • @TheBrokenMeeple

    I would say go and onitama are rather up there on the depth to rules ratio... Maybe even chess, though that is a bit more complex. tzolkin and Terra mystica are also incredibly deep for the rules load. Granted those two have more rules than the games on your list, but the ratio is rather mind boggling.

    I have a slightly different concept of “low complexity high depth”. Most of the games on your list are what I would call “short”...but I think there are “bigger longer” games that are still elegant and simple in terms of mechanics but provide a high degree of depth. Anyway, here’s my list at the moment:
    Concordia
    The King is Dead
    Hanabi
    Tiny Towns
    Isle of skye
    Valley of the Kings
    Fantastic Factories
    Sushi Roll!
    Arboretum
    Codenames

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any game with multiple card abilities like a deck builder would struggle due to the sheer amount of text.
      Tiny Towns has low complexity, very low depth.
      Don't know King or Factories.
      A party game doesn't really qualify as none of them ever really have depth. I think I specifically disqualified them.
      Sushi Roll is fine but I'd rather play Sushi Go. Plus, neither game is particularly high depth.
      And Concordia........neither simple enough.....or short enough.......or fun. 😂
