Back in 2000/2001 there was a proposed X-Type R. I was an engineer at Jaguar cars then working on the supercharged V6 that was going to go in it. Part of the reason that it was canned was becuase the V6 engine wasn't reliably up to 330+ bhp, which it needed at the time. There were some supercharged "Mondeo" mules going round Coventry but Jag was getting short of cash and had to, unfortunatley can it, along with X600 - "F-Type".

I drive an X-Type 3.0, and I can tell you that these two cars are quite different but both very good. The Jag rides and grips better, the BMW steers and handles better - performance is virtually identical. The X has a bad reputation which is quite undeserved, though Jaguar COULD have designed it better - it's too front heavy and the transfer case is poor.

Nope, The V6 in the Mondeos was the KL series engine (170hp), the V6 in the X Type is the AJ series variant of the Duratec series engines (191hp due to Jag's proprietary cams, intake, and variable valve timing). These engines were originally designed by Porsche, but the design was sold to Mazda (another Ford subsidiary). These are excellent engines and recently won a 14 hour endro I competed in at Daytona. OK a few things to say here as a long term 330i owner and as someone who last year testo drove several xtypes If you look in that video, the 330i is an automatic, the X type is a manual. Had it been a manual 330i, the gap would have been even larger. under braking. The jag lurches forward. The E46 has an auto level system under braking that keeps the car level. @@medium95 I pimped out my BMW with a spoiler and cut custom vents on the hood. Very nice car I love how it drives. The Jaguar I have I just got it running 2 days ago and its been sitting since 2016 I bought it 6 months ago. However when the Jaguar turned on and my mechanic revved the engine all of the built up dirt in the exhaust pipes came shooting out. Both are very sporty cars and very similar. Stock wise I would say Jaguar X Type looks better but the way I customized my BMW I would say the BMW is better.
@@Smashinq Congratulations on your modification on the 330i, I guess it should be looking aggressive and nice. BTW I like the steering feel and ride quality of the X-type. It drives gently and effortlessly and also performs well on snow thanks to its permanent AWD . What model year or the X-type do you have? I have 2003 and 2004 X-type 3.0 . I prefer 2003 MY because it is more reliable and performs better on the snow, just in my case.
@@medium95 My Jaguar is a 2002. One of the previous owners had it custom welded exhaust tips I would guess 4 inchs wide each side and its also straight piped. However I haven't gotten to drive it because it needs 4 tires and all fluids like coolant and engine oil need to be changed. Its a baby blue Jag and I'm going to be painting the rims glossy black.
@@Smashinq Your X-type is older than mine. I think 2002-2003 X-type is the most luxurious version when it comes to leather and AWD system including viscous coupling. I once had 2002 X-type 2.5 from 2002 to 2011. All of my family loved that car so much. When maintained properly, the X-type should severe quite good even in comparison to now-a-day cars. As you know, all fluids and oils including brake fluid should be changed according to the proper intervals. I hope your X-type is satisfying and be loved as mine.
We have to bear in mind that in the drag race, 4-wheel drive cars are notoriously difficult to get of the line properly, and the driver there messed the start. The BMW would still have won, but by a much smaller margin. We have a Jag X-Type 2.5 in the family and we all love it, it is just a very nice car and that's the end of it. Go Jag!
x type looks more lyk a higher end car then the bmw in looks.. in my opinion.. the jag looks lyk a car tht u would spend a fortune on but its pretty affordable.. love it
my boyfriend has bMW 330i manual (2004) I own a Jaguar x-type (2005), automatic... they are both good cars... bmw picks up speed probably faster... they are just two different cars. bmw is more sporty, Jaguar is more classy........for classy people)) so let's not compare!!)))
@MurkaDurka EXCEPT! the jaguar x-type was built to compete with the BMW 330i.... i own a jag 2004 x-type 3.0 sport and i cream my freind in his 330i. they are both built to be compact executive sedans with enough power to carry their weight against the big dogs. they both do it well and both are very evenly matched.
Would you tell me what button in the X-type is shared with the Mondeo? There is no Ford button in the X-type interior, all parts that shared with Mondeo is just fuses and functional parts, that acomplishes Jaguar's high quality. And part sharing is no problem in car industry field and there are many other cars that share more parts with others than the X-type and Mondeo do.
Professional drivers handles the cars well without DSC or TCS, the cars basic dynamic characters were shown in the slalom test. Ofcourse they can handle the car to be seen worse than it actually is, and that is often the way Jaguars were tested by the commercial Journalists, if you believe or not. ;o)
@medium95 I find a lot of people dislike it because they dont consider it a real jag but thats just being silly. Its one of the best jags, all wheel drive and practical, luxurious as well.
Are you mentioning about the electrical trifles in the car? Reliability issues on the drivetrain, Jaguars serves well in long term ownership, however, BMWs usually does not. That's what we expect the car should be, in foreign area, you may concern about the fail of the engine in the BNW, Jaguar? no way! Jaguars are well-known GT cars for cross-country journey.
Ich würde auf jeden Fall den Jag nehmen. Die Ford - Technik beruhigt, und das Auto hat Charakter. Mit BMW habe ich leidvolle Erfahrungen sammeln dürfen. Keine Option für mich.
I have a slightly different idea. IMHO, Jaguar is more safer than BMW. Vehicle weight does matters in the class. Chassis enhancement means strong body shell. BMW is always lighter for dynamics... it is fast in that reason.( with more powerful engine followed by mechanical troubles in a long trip.)
@wildman261 It was actually me that suggested theres a new replacement for the x type on the way. Jaguar are planning to announce something in 2012. Concept pictures look like a smaller XF. Thats all I know for now.
that´s true. Jag is heavier and difference betwene handling isn´t very big. But difference betwene riding curves with this cars is surely different. And in this case i would prefare BMW. My opinion
@crazzywolf37 I agree with everything you said, but our Jag has not fallen apart mate... what did you do to it to fall apart??? Do you mean the gearbox - is your's an automatic? Ours is an automatic.
Above all, the X-type is all-round player as all Jaguars are, not a sprinter like BMWs. On the snow or slippery roads, the X-type would easily outperform the BMW 330i. Why didn't they compare the X-type 2.5 with the 325 xi? Isn't it because that the X-type 2.5 was faster than 325xi? Jaguar engineering is just good enough. Remember the passenger cars are not racing cars, speed is just a part of them, Jaugar is blending the ride quality, steering feel, ride comfort, fun-to-drive and luxury.
Jaguar gives smoother ride and comfort and the same level of handling. But BMW is more precise and agile. Both are good cars but they are different. Don't blame other side even though it is not your favorite. Speed.... BMW is the winner. Luxury... Jaguar is the winner. The choice is upon to you.
@crazzywolf37 I agre with you that the less computers thre are in a car the better it is. That's why I own an Alfa Romeo 146 from 1999, it is an 1.4 liter one but it is huge fun to drive - handles brilliantly, goes really fast for its cc, and all the rest of it. Take care of your Kag mate, what year;s model is your's? The one we have in the family is a late 2007's one.
@1061shrink1061 I see that you like BMW 330i more than the X-type. The better car is the car you more like. Howerver that deosn't mean that the other cars are not good. That's it. Enjoy the ride!.
Soft springs....., if the weight transfer is slow and gradual, the grip will be more stable, however, on the contrary, the steering response will become blunt. But, as you can see in this film, X-type's handling in slalom is just good enough. Look at the tail movements of the cars, 330i's tail is just sliding in the course, what if the road is more slippery at that time? Jaguar's handling is not worse than BMW's in real world. Further more, the X-type is far more heavier than BMW 330i.
I own an '02 x type and I love it you wont find another vehicle better in the snow you should've seen all the dummies in their over sized 4x4 trucks this year id fly past laughin in my AWD Jag baby. Let's see this race again with a couple inches of snow on the ground that beamer aint goin no where lol
I have the x-type R in red its a rare car you don't see many, its a late 51 plate, it looks more like an ARDEN spec JAG, so it was built before Ford got to it, it flies past all the boy racers in their so called fast motors and it will also knock the face off the M3 easily, the supercharger sounds like thor with a bad throat. but please remember that cars are a choice, and also remember DIESEL is the devils fuel
@medium95 what on earth does safety have to do with how good a car is to drive. Jaguars were better when they used I6's. as a driving machine, the 330i is far far more enjoyable, faster, smoother, nicer inside, brakes better (look at that jaguar lurch under braking). Its just a better driving machine all round. I'm glad they phased the X type out. I'm waiting to see what will replace it. a mini XF would be nice. Although i'm planning to test drive the XF later this year
@Irvine5312x6ma i live in Tucson it gets hot here so the brakes went really early and the a pillers are pealing on the inside, there is a vacuum hose somewhere that isnt hooked up so every now and again the engin almost dies. and the throttle is slightly sluggish. im 18 i have no problems driving a jaguar. i worked verry hard to buy it. its a lot of fun dont get me wrong i love the car but i will stick to pre 1996 cars and trucks the less computer the better.
Not exactly.... AJ V6 's most parts are different from Duratec V6's, except its engine block and crank shaft, even the crosshatching on steel liner is done by Jaguar. BTW, Duratec V6 is based on Porsche engineering.
oh and also, the interior plastics are terrible. The BMW feels much more up to date inside, much more solid and less rattles and squeaks. Not to mention the quality of the leather. I'm sorry, i really wanted to like the jag. I had the money to get one. But i wouldnt give up my 330i for a mondeo in drag. The quality just isnt there. It feels like a low end car dressed up. Its probably why jag dropped the X type off their line up. It cheapened the brand, which now has an impressive range
God I miss those years! Cars were just cars! You picked one not by the number of gadgets, connectivity or the ability to drive itself, but by the pleasure of DRIVING IT! Otherwise I'd go for Jag for the rare thing it is, although I wouldn't mind BMW either...it is not every day you meet the king 3.0 among the servants 2.0...
totally false!, have owned a 2001 325ci, a 2001 330 m sport convertible, and a 2002 330 m sport coupe, and a 2005 mondeo st.....so i speak from personal experience, not google. i just bought a 2006 x type, 2.5 v6 sport, no comparisent to the jag! SOOOO much smoother, v6 sounds awsome, lovely smooth ride, silence inside the cabin, no creaking or unusual noises, not to mention the famously stunning interior, cream leather with black gloss dash trimmings, will not own a bmw again after this jag!!
@LukeNAESA10 I think you confuse those two. BMW is much sportier and for enthusiasts, the jag is more of a business car with more luxury and smoother ride. I cant imagine a 25 year old in a jag, but I easily see a yang person cutting through the traffic in a fast 3 series.
X-type is true Jaguar. Jaguar makes Jaguars. It makes no difference even if X-type and other Jags have used Ford's parts. Jaguars' interior quality( wood and leather) is assumed to be better than its competitors'.
you guys must be crazy when u compare jag to bmw. BMW is No1. Sporty, luxurious, fancy and reliable. Have BMW 5series e60 525d 2006. I am more than satisfied.
@minniethe3rd yes, I know. You can get the other type of transportation, but for me driving is an experience. I like to have big horses under the hood. And if that big boy gets hungry, I just feed it with premium gasoline. I just yesterday ass whipped two cars. Toyota camry and Chevy Impala. They tasted some of BMW's power when i passed them doing 140mph. It would of never happened if i had Toyota Prius.
@1061shrink1061 V6 is better than I6 in the aspect of safety( get more crumple zone in the engine room) and handling. Jaguar used inline 6 engines from 1948 to 1997. It seems like that you don't know well about the Ford, either, regardless of Jaguar.
OK, 3 series is good. who cares? You know about the X-type...just a little. FYI,, AJ V6 is heavily modified version from Duratec V6, its contents are vey different. only block and crank shafts are shared, VVT, 3 staged induction, piston head design, cross hatch lining, cam shafts etc.. are for Jaguar, not for sharing, and Duratec V6 alone is a good engine.

Go Jag!
x type looks more lyk a higher end car then the bmw in looks.. in my opinion.. the jag looks lyk a car tht u would spend a fortune on but its pretty affordable.. love it
L'intérieur est vraiment magnifique de la Jaguar ainsi que l'esthétique extérieur la BMW a vraiment mal vieilli
my boyfriend has bMW 330i manual (2004) I own a Jaguar x-type (2005), automatic... they are both good cars... bmw picks up speed probably faster... they are just two different cars. bmw is more sporty, Jaguar is more classy........for classy people)) so let's not compare!!)))
Well said good sir.
Both wonderful cars. I own a 2002 X-Type 3.0, but I would take the BMW too.
What'sn wrong with having a part-ford chassis? That doesn't automatically make it bad.
Um its 2021
@@stephandelaney4097 yes and we've had the XE for some time now... a smaller XF.
is it possible to find an english version of this?
Jaguar love
around 6 to7k.. I got a 2004 xtype and i love it.
i have this car in Rabigh,Saudia arabia its really awsome car
that´s true. Jag is heavier and difference betwene handling isn´t very big. But difference betwene riding curves with this cars is surely different. And in this case i would prefare BMW. My opinion
@MainLandBoston Wrong! The engine is a Ford and possibly the platform.
@crazzywolf37
I agree with everything you said, but our Jag has not fallen apart mate... what did you do to it to fall apart???
Do you mean the gearbox - is your's an automatic? Ours is an automatic.
Young Tim Schrick.
Good cars?
Great cars.
@crazzywolf37
I agre with you that the less computers thre are in a car the better it is.
@1061shrink1061
I see that you like BMW 330i more than the X-type.
Bmw e46 330i beste auto
I own an '02 x type and I love it you wont find another vehicle better in the snow you should've seen all the dummies in their over sized 4x4 trucks this year id fly past laughin in my AWD Jag baby. Let's see this race again with a couple inches of snow on the ground that beamer aint goin no where lol
Jaguar came to belong to Ford in 1988. Jaguar is still Jaguar, but people just deny it.
@medium95
Thanks, I felt I just had to say the truth mate :-)
You have a great taste in cars, quite obviously. Well done!
What are the hp for each car? The jag has 229 doesn't it? And what is the best off the start, a car with awd or 2wd? Thanks for reacting.
It cheapened the brand, which now has an impressive range
nope.. just simple physics and fact. Perhaps you'd like to explain to us how the balance of a straight six differs from a V6?
This must be one of the oldest video's on TH-cam. Love the Jaguar x type.
X-type is true Jaguar. Jaguar makes Jaguars. It makes no difference even if X-type and other Jags have used Ford's parts. Jaguars' interior quality( wood and leather) is assumed to be better than its competitors'.
There's no such car as an X-Type R. I know because I was on the project for it when it was canned (along with X600).
you guys must be crazy when u compare jag to bmw. BMW is No1. Sporty, luxurious, fancy and reliable. Have BMW 5series e60 525d 2006. I am more than satisfied.
Yavuz Moran you've obviously never owned a Jag.
Jaguar observed that bmv steering fluid overheated so they built a dedicated radiator for steering fluid, its in the X-type.
Of course the jag is better....no need for tests!
@1061shrink1061 V6 is better than I6 in the aspect of safety( get more crumple zone in the engine room) and handling. Jaguar used inline 6 engines from 1948 to 1997.
It seems like that you don't know well about the Ford, either, regardless of Jaguar.
i got a smg trans in my 330i
¡Bueno vídeo!
Bmw😘
Jag👌
jaguar is class, unlike the kraut mobile
i prefer the xtype ;) it looks better it sounds better it has a Better handling and anyways i dont like the german cars haha
and im from germany :D
Der Calvin der Jaguar hat das schlechte Fahrwerk du Vollidiot also ist das Handling trotz Allrad schlechter
But be sure both cars are very good.
since I don't know Deutsch, who is the winner? I own bmw 318 but thinking about buying Jag and don't know what to do (Jag from 00's, 2001-2003)
Buy a good 2006 x type 2. ltrd diesel turbo. 150,000 miles, clean body, around 2 grand. Cant go wrong
not true though, bmw still use turbo's in some of their cars like a 320ti
In this case, the BMW. I like the jags, I just dont like the x-type.
