Great video. I have two that I took to a buddy to weld. Said he couldn't get it to take. So I searched and found this. Looks like it will work way better. And yes, I didn't very much notice the "self centering" job. Hope I can do as well....lol.

Perfect. I didn’t want to throw mine away, now I know how to fix it, Thanks ! Things are too expensive nowadays to throw away, besides, anything new will only last a few months or a year, that’s how things are made today and that’s a waste of money. The hoe I have is over 10 YEARS old with lots of use. Fix fix fix, don’t repurchase anything.

Left off the most important part --- the outer metal sleeve. In fact, I would have merely drilled through the sleeve and through the hoe end shaft. I not only would have; I have done it. That outer sleeve, even the plastic ones, provides much of the strength in that area.

I guess this shows a great disadvantage to the tools with fiberglass handles, cuz they'd have to be repaired with epoxy and strapping and still not last as long.

Instead of cutting off the tapered end, just cut off about 1/4" to 1/2" of the tip. Then cut a kerf across the end. Drill the hole 1/4" to 1/2" deeper into the handle. Reinstall the ferrule and the hoe head. Use a flat tipped bar or chisel to drive the ferrule securely onto the handle.
If it was still loose, the wrap aluminum tape around the hoe tang to fill the difference.
I treat my rusty tools with a wire brush and a wipe or two of phosphoric acid. This usually turns the metal black. Vinegar could also be used, but it takes longer and the part must be submerged in the vinegar.
