I'm enjoying watching you demonstrate your many skills and talents. I wish I could bring you my grandmother's garden fork that she used for many years before she passed away in 1998. It's been mine ever since. The handle has splits in the wood but it's not broken. The tines are the kind that curve, more like a handheld cultivator, and the handle is straight. It never occurred to me until now that I could put a new handle on it! Perhaps I can get a little help from my brother. 😊 Thank you for bringing to light the possibilities!

      Hi Gwynn...
I'm glad that you are enjoying my videos...
If you didn't live in Oregon then I would suggest that you could send it to me to repair...
It sounds like a lovely old tool that also has sentimental value...
I hope that you and your brother can repair it perhaps for future generations too...

I have that same stainless steel fork that I bought for my mother-in-law and it broke on her first use in the same manner that yours broke. I brought it home to fix it about 20 years ago. It's still standing in the corner of the shop. She is long gone but maybe I can fix it for one of her kids. At least now I know how! Thanks, Andy! 😊

Nicely done. I think the word you were looking for where the handle goes into the fork is “socket”. At least that is what it is on chisels with that feature. Again, really well done repair; the use of the lathe to fit the handle to the socket was a great idea

Another reasonable don’t throw it away fix. I broke the plastic end (the Y end) off of my snow scraper. Was going to try and turn a short bit, drill it out and fix it to the handle with a spline /wedge sort of thing. Am still very amateurish on the lathe but it’s worth a go. Now I want a lathe. I'm doing almost exactly the same job but without a lathe. Similar high-quality, stainless steel fork, just turning over a vegetable patch, not even really digging, when I hear the crack. Either the wood is not good quality or I need to maintain them better but this happens to me a lot & with spades too. Two forks, two spades in the last 3 years.

    • @AndysCornishCreations
      @AndysCornishCreations  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi K Cavan ...
You will never regret getting a lathe... such a great hobby...
I don't think that it is a lack of maintenance on your part ...
Mine was just the Same... light use.. stored in the shed...and just snapped...
The wood must be poor quality...
I have old shovels, spades, forks etc and have had them for many years with no problems... no maintenance
They can make poor quality tools look really good these days...
I hope that your repair goes well...

What, no rain in Cornwall today?!?! I am flabbergasted! "With a bit of persuasion" in plain English would mean, using brutal force, right? The beauty of the English language, ha ha ha... In no other language that I know you can say what you want to say so elegantly without saying it... I recall telling one of my teachers that I had to run my lungs out to catch the last train and that I was sweating pure water... Harriet, the teacher said, oh no no, my dear, you don't sweat... Horses sweat, men perspire and the ladies glow... Ha ha ha... I'll never forget that... Having said that, really nice repair job, Andy, well done, thumbs up! Also for that absolutely beautiful garden of yours which even now in the cold season makes me turn green with envy... Just leaves me with one question: Where is Ivy? Are you out of treats? Have a lovely and relaxing weekend, Andy! Take care, byeee 👋🏻😉👋🏻 Jude

@@AndysCornishCreations Ahhh, that explains it all... I thought that it did not look all that cold for the season... Yes, English is a beautiful language, especially well suited for the dry humour that is so very typical in the UK... I wondered about your allusion to "Andles for forks" and found the Two Ronnies sketch, ha ha ha... Never seen it before... So funny, I have been laughing my head off... Got any O's??? Oh dear... You realise that this would make you "Andy Andy", do you? Yes, weekend again! Today we have had all sorts of weather... Cold and foggy in the morning, followed by rain, followed by snow, followed by sunny and warm... My little birdies outside look a bit puzzled like "What, April already?"... Hi Gwynn...
Thank you so much for your concern...
We are all safe and well thank you...
I was working at a house near the coast on Friday morning and two large trees were blown down and landed across the entrance to the property... we had to wait a few hours for the trees to be cut up so that we could get out...
When I got home we had no damage but shortly after the power cut out and we had no electricity for 27 hours ...
It's back on now and although it's still very windy all is back to normal...
I'm guessing that this is nothing compared to some of the weather that you get in Oregon...
Thanks again..I hope that you and yours are well too ...

@@AndysCornishCreations I'm relieved to hear that you've come through the storm undamaged. The reported wind speeds were extremely high!
Of late our biggest concern in southern Oregon is the ongoing drought and the devastating forest fires that are a result of it. Our area was evacuated for a week last summer as a 413,000 acre fire came within a mile and a half of the homes here. We've had a very dry winter and are worried about the coming fire season.

Hi Andy, thanks for showing that. A friend has asked if I'll replace the handle on his grandfather's sledgehammer. Obviously that is slightly different. Any advice? I've bought a hickory handle...Will that do?

    • @AndysCornishCreations
      @AndysCornishCreations  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jenny...
      My pleasure...
Hickory is the traditional wood for handles so that is perfect...
You may need to tweak the fit into the head of the sledgehammer...
It needs a saw cut for the hardwood wedge in line with the head of the hammer...
Or you can drive metal wedges crossways...
I would recommend TH-cam search... sledgehammer repair or sledgehammer new handle ..
I hope that this helps... and good luck...
