Former Western employee here. I've been restoring, repairing, and working on Western knives for many years. You nailed the restoration of this knife. I like.... 😎
Its not about restoring Western G46 its the Historical Significance on where that knife has been and the great man who own it and sailing to all those Islands in WW2 and made it home safe love to know what ship he served on .... Mr Magdad that has to be one of your best Restorations to date .... Happy Easter take care see you next Sunday
You honored that veteran that originally owned that knife. Glad that his locations were saved, what an impressive list. Beautiful work, congratulations! Happy Easter!
Wow! That was a lot of effort! It came out great, but I was not sure it was worth it until you showed us the engraving. Now we see it is a priceless piece of history that certainly deserved all your hard work! Well done!
A lot of sanding. Understatement for the year. Near the end I thought I was watching " The Right Stuff". I wonder what ship he served on. Terrific job by the way 😊.
I thought the job you did on that handle was fantastic. What a great job! Nice video and enjoyed the ending with the fellows name and seeing all those islands he went to. The Things R.C. Tedder must have seen.
I love the handle. I like the present colour better than the original, looks more like a leather colour. Well done. Quite a labour of love for this historic knife. Dave.
Really nice restoration. I have a collection of several WWII and Viet Nam era knives. That's a perfect item for honoring your neighbor's stepfather. I'm sure both are proud of it.
A+ for effort. A+ for your craftsmanship. It’s beautiful. My father always said, how good a craftsman you are is how well you cover up your mistakes. Thank You
I turned a few pens with leather I stacked from a belt that belonged to my uncle before he passed away. I already knew from experience that the leather was gonna be a bastard to grind down. You nailed it, that handle looks better than new.
You did an impeccable job. Not only is it beautiful. It honors those who used it and those who fought for our freedom. Thanks for sharing the video and as always excellent job.
Superb work Magdad. If that was my knife I would be very proud to have it given back to me in that condition. You performed a perfectly sympathetic restoration and turned me off leather handles. They look like a tremendous amount of work. Great job mate.
That turned out wonderfully. I really like the colour of the handle, but to be honest I also liked the way the black looked. You did that thing justice. Well done!
Outstanding restoration MagDad! I was so excited the moment I saw the thumbnail as I instantly recognized this knife. I owned a knife of nearly the exact same pattern and era only mine was manufactured by the Cattaraugus Cutlery Co. NY. The pummel on mine was about 3x thicker and had crude checkering on the end, otherwise nearly identical to yours. You did a fantastic job overall and really saved the handle finish from blackening caused by the wet/dry. No worries! What a great piece of history this knife is. This is one of my favorite videos of yours.
Excellent work Magdad, a lot of work though, too bad about the staining from the wet sanding, glad you managed to retrieve the situation, it looked spot on ! I'm sure Andy must be thrilled with the result !
Magdad That's, ĥands down, one of the best restorations I have ever seen. I would love to see the look on your friend's face when he sees the end result. The black coloring may not have come from the wet/dry sandpaper. It may have come from the water and the steel. The tannic acid left in the leather may have contributed. All said it may have been rust. Bob
That's a wonderful piece of history and I'm positive being a veteran myself that the original owner would be very pleased with your restoration of his knife. Nice job Magdad!
That certainly came out fantastic, how cool is that with all the islands engraved. As other have said it is worthy of a display case. Hopefully someone in the comments will know the exact issue that blackened the leather.
This was a wonderful restoration. Technically interesting as always, but also providing a glimpse into one man's personal journey through a momentous period in history It was very interesting to discover, by the way, how simple (when you've seen it done!) leatherwork like this on a knife handle turns out to be Best wishes. Patrick
It looks to be an excellent restoration magdad, very well done. I have an old Western or two that needs the same kind of attention but since, as a Western collector, I have a full line of their knives I am thinking "outside the box" and may use a different handle like smooth white bone (then scrim on it, abalone or tiger eye for a little difference. Thank you for your inspiration.
Wow Magdad, you knocked that one out of the park! You made a point to mention putting a trash can under the vise. It's one of those things that's easy to forget to do. But if the blade shot out of the end cap onto the cement floor it could have snapped the point right off.
I love that he includes such narrative details. No other content creator I watch does that. Is it entirely necessary? Not really…, but it really makes MagDad relatable to me.
Thanks ScoutCrafter! This was a challenging project! I was pretty discouraged when the leather turned black. I'm glad it turned out OK! I definitely learned a lot!
Happy Easter 357magdad! That is an awesome job on a knife that is priceless in more ways than one. Wow! I am sure Andy & R.C. Tedder will like it & appreciate the time and work effort you put into this!
I just picked up one of these the other day, and I've been trying to find info on restoring it, especially the handle. This is so very helpful! Great video.
Beautiful job. I would say that knife is priceless at this point. Glad you gave it a proper refitting. I love stacked leather and hope to make a few handles that way in the future.
What a egg-sighting video! Awesome job Magdad 👏🏻 and awesome story behind the knife. I think he will be very happy with the outcome and you should too. Thank You for sharing!
Nice neat cutting on the butt to remove the plate. A dremel is the poor mans scalpel. You come up with innovative ideas. Very good job. The knife is priceless.
What a great restoration. You have the skills to save a memory and a great piece of history. This was a tough project, but the result is wonderful. What kinds of material did you use for the black and red banding? Happy Easter to all.
@@357magdadI definitely prefer doing the hidden tang variety. I just finished an old Western Auto that was like yours with the exposed tang on the sides. I just finished up an old unbranded Ka-Bar type with a threaded pommel, I love doing those.
