It’s a motherfriggin CRIME that a vocalist this talented didn’t achieve more fame. Just listen to that raspiness, that sultriness, the way she holds a note so softly and switches from one note to the other so effortlessly...so, so skillful.

Pulling a recording session like this together must have been a huge task. The outcome yields such a smooth reward to us, the general public, we almost didn't notice due to the fantastic song writing. Likely some of the best musicians in the world at that time. It plays on the radio and nobody really notices because there are no flaws
Even the way she performed this was the most perfect way to do it. The passion in the face, The body movements to the beat. Just WOW, I was born in 1999 and will be carrying this music to my kids like my family did.

I always return to this when my faith in music begins to die. It's timeless. Musically it's catchy as hell, lyrically interesting and the video is simple yet aesthetically pleasing. It rocks, beating most music hands down. Timeless.
shitcasecinema I totally agree!! The 80's had the BEST music by far! And my kids really like it as well! It's just timeless music that I think will still be around for several more years if not decades!
Its easy to neglect the beauty that this song due to its frequent air play, but if you listen to it like it is the first time, you can only go 'WOOOW, rock on girl'. Such talent. Glad that his was a soundtrack to my life in 1990.
I remember in 1989 I was crossing the bridge into Memphis on I-40 heading to N.Carolina and this song came on! The sun was setting and WOW! What a great moment! Black Velvet if you please! 29 and never thought about getting old!

People used to make fun of me when I listened to this song over and over. So tell me, is there something wrong with this song? Absolutely nothing - The bass guitar and the arrangement and obviously her voice fits together so perfectly. Still up to today, this is one of my all time favourites and will always be.
@@nickriffed9775 I have my doubts about it. It's not impossible, but what makes you think so? It does sound like a bass, you can even hear the noise of strings being stopped on the 2 & 4.
@@TobiaTesan you can have as many doubts as you like, my friend, but it doesn't alter the facts. One aspect of the song listeners have frequently noted is the tune's distinctive fretless bassline. While a common belief holds that the melody was played using an actual fretless bass guitar, Myles' bassist for the rest of her self-titled album, Steve Webster, acknowledged in an online discussion forum that he did not perform the bassline on "Black Velvet" himself; rather, it was Tyson who played the riff on a synthesizer, using a fretless bass sample.[7]
You're Mama obviously had some great taste!! I'll bet she was an Elvis fan, too!! A lot of folks don't know that this song was about him... I'm so sorry for your loss, may she rest in peace.
I'm so sorry cause of u. My friend's mom died when we was nine, and he started to acting strange, coming to the school really early, and making fun of classes. You bet , I give it few thousand “ thumbs up “ - my daughter plays GTA , yet she finds the old music annoying as heck . But it’s nice that they incorporate decent music into it instead of the “ ghastly, horrifying and hyper sexual “ music from the new generation of young people.
I knew this record from GTA 5, but I just came because it's so damn nice hearing a bluesy rhythm with such a smooth woman's voice like that, which isn't singing about a full-blown degrading lifestyle!

This tune is just perfect. It reminds me of that perfect night when everything is just right. I won't comment Alannah's voice cause she sang this perfectly. Her voice has so much emotion and nostalgia of times which I never lived. But the guitarist really, really nailed it. These are some of the tastiest blues licks ever. The song's opening makes me feel like I'm somewhere in the wild, at the banks of Mississippi. If you haven't, listen to the new version of the song that Alannah recorded recently, it's great.
He definitely would. I never like speaking for others, but, IMO, he would love it. Wondering if Lisa and Priscilla have heard it. I would guess a yes, winning that Grammy and all.
@@TheLittleRedVixen I got no vote but reckon why this girl didn't really make the big time? Worked personal security for some of Nashville royalty and there was always talk, that I really can't repeat exactly, about the "powers" in Nashville and music in general, that decided who was in and who was out. Talent wasn't the prime driver of who that might be. Met some of em....I wasn't even looked at. Invisible. Kinda way it was supposed to be but there are ways of bein ignored that are more disrespectful. My life and living had nothing to do with them and....ah, nevermind. @@xMorbidArtx GTA may not be your cup of tea, but it's far from being a shit game, haha. Legit though, my favourite GTA game soundtrack-wise is Vice City. I knew half of the songs on there, but it also introduced me to a whole heap of awesome '80s songs that I had not heard of before, and all of a sudden I was searching for more classic tunes!
same. I was driving around, heard this song, just the title, paused the game and TH-camd it. You find a lot of great music on the GTA radio stations. lol. It's not really a shit game unless you mean like morals or the lack thereof throughout lmao 🤣 otherwise it combines a lot of cool genres. I wish they'd hire a fashionista for the clothing stores, though. GTA 5 was pretty blah for that, I wanted to get Trevor a mohawk too like CJ in San Andreas, lol.
This song was way out there for its time and may have held her career back. But a true classic that still doesn't get played enough. Always loved this.
I aint gonna argue and say anyone can top an original but only one comes close is Kobra, her voice always gives me gooesbumps. th-cam.com/video/UZFeOJHGU_Y/w-d-xo.html

Long live my uncle, rest in peace big guy. We carry on your awesome love for music. For you, and for my cousins, you left a hell of a good family behind.
Easily the most talented and versatile female rock vocalist of all time. The husk and raspiness in her voice are so subtle and unique that it blows my mind every time when I hear Black Velvet.
She had all kinds of hits in Canada, the US radio stations/ music industry wouldn't pick her up coz she wouldn't play their industry games and that's how things work in the music industry in America
This song was nominated for a grammy in 1992, I think. It was the same year that Mariah Carey debuted her song. Don’t remember it, but .Mariah won the grammy. I always thought Allanah was a much better singer!
She has a GRAMMY, two JUNOS, nominations for 17 other major music awards, and this song was #1 on Billboard. The album went platinum in almost every market around the world, triple platinum in Australia, and diamond in Canada... Now, tell me, how exactly is that "underrated"? Cheers!
I was referring to the song itself not the artist or the album. How many people would name this song in their top favourites. That is the point I was making. But having condescending replies like yours makes reading comments such a joy. Please don't reply . Cheers !!!!!
@@no-oneman.4140 Apologies, if I upset you. That was not my intention. Much in the way of tone gets lost in text. My point (if only for posterity) was simply that, evidently, it was a favourite song for millions of people; and, presumably, still is. No higher standards could it have possibly met. I'm not trying to take away your love for the song, or patronize you. Not at all. I'm just saying, underrated it is not, and never was. The use of that word in general, these days, is rampant and frustrating. Whatever might be trending on modern social media, at any given moment, does not reflect the greater state of music, artists, or their fans. Cheers!

Whenever this song comes on I break into choreography thats 80% touching myself and 20% writhing on the floor in manner that is probably only sexy in my head, and in reality looks more akin to someone having a stroke.
The sexiest tune ever. The bass, the drums, her voice. This never gets old. Never.

I love this song. :) I bet if Elvis were around when it came out, he'd be honored to hear it.
He definitely would. I never like speaking for others, but, IMO, he would love it. Wondering if Lisa and Priscilla have heard it. I would guess a yes, winning that Grammy and all.
Zapamiętam te piosenkę na długo
I would have loved to hear elvis do a remake of this song. Big elvis fan. Me and my mom go to memphis every year for elvis week

You kidding? He can't sing about himself! This is a tribute to him. It belongs to Alannah and Alannah, alone.
If you were only going to be famous for one song you'd want it to be this damn good.

Hunger Cult Films, She did a country version of this song. It was on the flip side of the single cassette. Telling my age! LOL
Wow her voice! This song! A masterpiece!
Can’t believe I am listening to this song again I can’t stop ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Possibly, the sexiest record ever recorded, the sexiest performance too.
Sadly careless whispers take that place
@@TheLittleRedVixen I got no vote but reckon why this girl didn't really make the big time? Worked personal security for some of Nashville royalty and there was always talk, that I really can't repeat exactly, about the "powers" in Nashville and music in general, that decided who was in and who was out. Talent wasn't the prime driver of who that might be. Met some of em....I wasn't even looked at. Invisible. Kinda way it was supposed to be but there are ways of bein ignored that are more disrespectful. My life and living had nothing to do with them and....ah, nevermind. Most of them gone but their damage was done. Never interacted with this young lady but was around her at several events. Seemed like nice person. Maybe that was the problem. L8r.

It's pretty sexy without over doing. Like the leave them wanting more, thing.

I'm 1974, Polish blues fan. It was my probably the 1st real game changer video thing stuff in my life. It's epic to me (with ZZTop) and it will always be. Even learnt to play the guitar in garage band, learnt english too :) Alannah and blues 4 ever! Just wanted to say: thank you...
This song reminds me of my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battle with cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I miss her smiles, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, life could be so unfair most times but sometimes I wonder why bad things always happen to good people. She’s always in our hearts
Her voice is so incredible, UGH. I love the rasp in her voice and she's also so beautiful!😍
Ja das stimmt....❤💥💯
I heard this in GTA V when I was buying some brass nookies from Ammunation...Thought I’d listen to the whole thing...
Nice. That's one way to get into a song.
Los Santos Rock Radio... You'll hear it there quite often
@@xMorbidArtx i got into metal after the dirt movie so technically yes
That voice ❤ this song will never die. Let’s make sure of that 🙌✨
This song was way out there for its time and may have held her career back. But a true classic that still doesn't get played enough. Always loved this.
Edit: 2021and still better than new songs.
Stop lying, it's 2019. Post dating comments.
93 and 1/2% of all the songs in the 80's were (and still are) better than the ones they have now. And I'm even including the ones I didn't like

Easily the most talented and versatile female rock vocalist of all time. The husk and raspiness in her voice are so subtle and unique that it blows my mind every time when I hear Black Velvet.
Love this powerful song and sound 👍🎶
Pity she didn’t have more hit songs. She has a great singing voice. And plus she is super gorgeous
Indeed. She's really underrated singer.
She does have a really really good voice
She had all kinds of hits in Canada, the US radio stations/ music industry wouldn't pick her up coz she wouldn't play their industry games and that's how things work in the music industry in America
This song was nominated for a grammy in 1992, I think. It was the same year that Mariah Carey debuted her song. Don’t remember it, but .Mariah won the grammy. I always thought Allanah was a much better singer!
@@arliewayne1 more interesting for sure!
Criminally Underrated. Astounding. Best song about Elvis by a country mile.
Cheers!
Canada's Drag Race brings us back this masterpiece 🔥
She's immortal...
Time stands still when you listen to Alannah...
Don't be surprised if she makes a comeback. Forget the music industry. This is talent. Mrs. Myles.
A comeback? At her age? I wish this could be possible but the most probable comeback scenario would be as a judge in a talent competition
Unfortunately she has very severe back problems and is almost a cripple. Real shame as she was a sensational artist and extremely attractive as well.
