I know this would be pure speculation but what are the chances this could run Cuphead through wine? I'm designing a bartop now with a removable controller and having this running on a RPI would allow me to put the PC in the controller and use the bartop as a dock
FYI the 16K page size might be an issue with some of the emulators. You can force Pi OS 12 to use the more compatible 4K page size though; try adding kernel=kernel8.img in your config.txt and reboot. Confirm if it's 16k or 4K by running uname -a after reboot.
I'm only in the market for the Pi 500. I use the Pi 400 as an HTPC and could use some extra computing power. I also have an RPI3 and RPI4 as servers (handling files, backups, running some automation, etc.), and they are fast enough for the next couple of years.
When emulators catch up to this I so want to build another mini-game box. Building the Pi 4, which was a big moment for me because I'm more software savvy than hardware savvy, was awesome. I WANNA DO IT AGAIN.
RetroPie didn't work for me on the Raspberry Pi 5 until I switched from Raspberry Pi OS to Ubuntu, then it worked okay. I don't know if that helps but I thought it might.
Nice to see Raspberry Pi on the channel again. This brings me back to when I first subbed to your channel in 2018 and the 3B+ was still the king. Before the Steam Deck and other handhelds took over, everyone wanted to make their own bartop arcade or Minty Pi. Fun times. I still have mine but planning to replace it with a mini Ryzen.
@Dant2142 Recallbox already has a version out; many of these developers have one already and are working with it. I still don't expect it before it releases, maybe within the week of launch and certainly before a month after launch.
This is prefect timing, order one for my son as a way to get into retro gaming with emulation. I know a thing or two about emulating I have 15 systems and 15,000 games on a LG Wing.
Eventually, with how new the hardware is we just don't have compatible drivers and software yet. Whatever didn't work well on the Pi4 wont work at all on the Pi5. Give the Pi5 a handful of months and it will become quite more powerful than the Pi4 in real world usage
With on-board Mesa and with Vulkan drivers… I’m hopeful. I was running a Pi 4 with super Mario sunshine at idk 15 fps through wine on a super old Dolphin build. Lotta possibilities now.
It's odd. The pi4 played everything so well that the gamecube seemed a generation of pies away. They say it's twice as powerful, whichwould suggest ps2 and gamecube, possibly wii. The real problem seems to be the anemic gpu. Great for spreadsheets, a bit crap for gaming.
Pi 5 seems like a brute force solution to N64 emulation. Many of us hoped that most N64 games would be playable on Pi 4, but the emulator never felt optimized for that hardware.
N64 emulation as a whole leaves a lot to be desired. The fact that you can play a PSP racing game at 60 FPS but struggle to turn the corner in freaking Goldeneye 64 without dropping frames speaks VOLUMES. For whatever reason it's one of the hardest consoles to emulate.
n64 emulator are very optimized the problem is obsolete architecture GPU from Broadcom not supported all features from DX10 GPU level It is behind an architecture of the nvidia 8000 series performance . For good n64 needed good gpu aceleration and not cpu bottleneck has not been a problem for a while now how strong GPU rasterization power and how aceleration hw supported features without emulated.
$60! Add the $ for a case, memory card, power supply and the heatsink, you can push up to $100. Anything over $80 for what this does is way overpriced. Can find a minipc that does emulation 10xs better for less than $150 tbh.
I just paid 100 for the heatsink, psu and board 4gb from cannakit lol The thing is i use these in arcade1up countercades where there is next to no space
Do you have any more recent tutorials/videos on the pi 5? seeing what's now compatible and achievable etc. Asking as I know others have videos on this but yours are the most informative and well constructed. Happy new year!
Here I am running these games on my pi3b, struggling with mupen on retropi as the OS Guess it’s time to buy the pi5. I’m liking that you don’t have to choose between a standard OS and the retropi. Leaves a lot on the table for multipurposing application. Thanks for the review! Ya sold me on it
Definitely going to use this and build it into my crt monitor for an arcade station. Native psp res looks great on crt due to every support resolution being native
as soon as i will get hands on i will compile a build but still need drivers, igalia still need to commit the vulkan drivers (mesa) that are on their way, some of my friends who already got the board managed to overclock to 3.0 Ghz stable with active cooling, ps2 and GC/WII will definetely run better.
I feel like at this point there are better options for emulation than raspberry pi (any flavor). If history repeats, it will end up being prohibitively overpriced due to lack of supply..
I tend to agree. Assuming someone is buying it all from scratch, once you get all you need you'll be well over 100 bucks. Which doesn't sound bad but this isn't 2019 anymore. I use my Steam Deck for emulation now. It has far more CPU and GPU power than even a pi 5 and for emulation is a superior option all around. Yes, it does cost more but not a ton more money, and you get a machine that can do so much more (if gaming and emulation is your priority)
I mean a pi is meant to be an education device first, but I also do agree, the Raspberry Pi is too expensive for what you get. I could get an old optiplex or a low-end laptop and emulate just as good as a pi 5 can.
People saying there's more options out there now for cheaper. I love the pi for emulation as so many devs out there and img builders. I have my pi 4 plugged to my TV and it really is just a pick up and play allowing me to get a few retro games in with my kids
Hey man, glad to see you're still posting awesome videos. Thanks to you and your content, I got really deep in the retrogaming through RPi over the last 5 years. I plan on upgrading to a Pi5 to play Atomiswave games, I'll check on your channel if you decide to have a take on that :)
In minute 6:00 you are using version 1.12 and that is from 2021 and now recently came out version one 1.16.5 which greatly improves performance, you might know used that version, keep in mind for another video 👍🏻
he said he had no luck using newer versions (he said he tried to compile etc). im sure the newer ones will work eventually, as i wanna see how this hardware does with vulkan and emulation.
As someone who is not much of a computer techie, it seems like a lot has to be modified and added to emulate games. What about systems where all the emulators and games are already included, and you just plug-and-play? I've seen the KinkHank Mini MP100, the GameGrid 2, and the AceMagic T8. There are others, of course. Do you guys like any of those? Recommendations for plug-and-play? I'm not worried about emulating PS3, or maybe even PS2. I'm mostly interested in old cart games, maybe up to the 1st gen CD/DVD games.
Def more developers need this. weve had to get this working ourselves on the orange pi5. once we get the raspb pi 5 well be good to go and already have the installers ready getting these emulators to work on retropie. none of these emulators tested the scope or capability of board. aestherx ps2 emulator would have been a defining test and a great comparison between the orange pi5 rk3588. most of these emulators are core dependent and some need vulkan not open gl. god of war olympus will still hiccup because the cores have done there job it needs vulkan support.
@@ryecatcher25 over all pcs use x86 and ur most basic pc can run nfl blitz killer instinct etc. total different architecture. This has value if u wanna see a full related test check out orange pi5 emulation. Until devs get this board we won’t know what this can really do. My best guess is stable ps2 emulation with maybe slight hiccups depending on video graphic drivers
I would like to see how some games on the actual Mame version does on Pi5 like the Sony ZN boards like Street Fighter EX games, Soul Calibur, Tekken 3 an such
The appeal that brought popularity to Raspberry Pi was low cost emulation. The prices have been out of hand for years now. On top of this, there are now mini PCs and handhelds that run circles around SBCs, which do cost more, yet have way more power. I have my Steam Deck and RoG Ally. Why do I need an RPI5?
Not being able to run PSP GoW flawlessly even at 1X is a bad sign. I can see the RPi5 still won't be able to beat the RK3588, no matter how mature the emulators get.
Hello eta prime been watching your videos since I had a raspberry pi 3b. I over clocked it as a noob and it blew up. I currently did a rebuild of my pi 4 and have been really impressed with what the pi 4 can do lately particularly on redream. It would be nice to see how the pi 5 handles games I know the pi4 struggles with, alone in the dark resident evil 3 and both test drive games. Reason I ask is that I am going to go all in and make floor standing arcade machine with light guns. I am undecided weather to get a pi 5 to put in it or you did another video about a Dell optiplex 3050 with a graphics card. Again thanks for your help and if I ever get a problem I can't figure out I alway ask "what does eta prime say"
Will the Raspberry Pi 5 play certain Nintendo 64 and DS games? To ETA PRIME, question, in the past I tried out many N64 games including Quest 64, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Bomberman 64 the Second Attack, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2 on my Raspberry Pi 4 console and seemed to work fine with a few stutters. However when I play certain games like Bomberman 64, Paper Mario 64, Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, it either becomes so glitchy that it's unplayable and gives the black screen of death so I'm unable to play those certain games. Can you make another youtube video and test out Bomberman 64, Paper Mario 64, Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine on the N64 emulator on the Raspberry Pi 5? I want to see if they'll finally work. Also I want to see DS games like New Super Mario Bros, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 tested out because those games were so stuttery and slow it was unplayable. I also want to see you try out a Gamecube game like Fire Emblem Path of Radiance just to see if it will work.
For OpenGL, the GL mark2 is only 900 on Pi5? The overclocked out dated Jetson nano can do 2000+. So, for emulation, the Rk3588 still the one for God of War? Thanks!

And would it be just up and running and gaming. Like do I have to put the SD card in a computer and do anything with it because from my understanding when you buy the preloaded SD cards from certain websites, their pitch is they did all the hard work loading the games on the card and ideally, you should be able to just put the card in the raspberry pi turn on the power and play.
I could see Nintendo make an N64-Mini with similar hardware. Sell it for $129.99, pack in 10 games and an N64-style controller with built in rumble. - Super Mario 64 - Super Mario Kart - Paper Mario - Kirby 64 - Zelda OoT - Zelda MM - StarFox - F-Zero - Super Smash Bros. - Maybe put an incomplete EarthBound64 as a bonus game to try out. Hell, a port of the GBA version in english would also be acceptable...not make sense to put on the system, but appreciated.
When can we buy it? I see nothing on amazon. I may need to listen to the audio on this it's probably addressed. Just dont want to wake my kid right now
nice but doesnt offer something over my mini pc beelink ser 5 pro.. i will get one though as im a fan of pi and maybe later comes some kind of pi5 handheld
I'm new to this. Kind of lost when it comes to Linux. My brother got a Pi 5, but everything has screen tearing. Trying to figure out how to fix it. SNES, Genesis, everything has screen tearing. We used Retropie and I tried Retroarch install through the apps, it all has screen tearing,.
That power button has me worried I'm using batocera in an arcade bartop cabinet so don't want to have to press it to boot up Plus got to know if it will play killer instinct
So development is moving fast! Recallbox is now available! I’ll have a video coming soon.

@ETAPRIME where's your video about the ayaneo pocket air emulation test?
Please test Killer Instinct 1 and 2 on MAME
FYI the 16K page size might be an issue with some of the emulators. You can force Pi OS 12 to use the more compatible 4K page size though; try adding kernel=kernel8.img in your config.txt and reboot. Confirm if it's 16k or 4K by running uname -a after reboot.

have you got a gpu working on it yet?
For a more generic way that is part of libc, run

which will return the pagesize in bytes
I am hoping they update the Pi 400 and come out with a Pi 500 or something based off the Pi 5 once software and drivers start to mature.
Yes, I definitely want the Pi 500 if there'll be an 8GB version. $100 seems fair for an 8GB Pi500 IMHO.
Maybe they even would pinout PCIe to full-fledged (1x) conncetor or m.2 slot
I hope so, too. The 400 form factor is very appealing.
and a CM5! that power would fit a lot of custom handheld if you get the heating sorted out
I'm only in the market for the Pi 500. I use the Pi 400 as an HTPC and could use some extra computing power. I also have an RPI3 and RPI4 as servers (handling files, backups, running some automation, etc.), and they are fast enough for the next couple of years.
I imagine Emulation will likely be a touch better once lakka is updated for it. I already have a dedicated SD card for it on my pi4

I think I will wait until the raspberry pi 6 maybe at that time I’m able to run ps2 with it… I can run psp games with my raspberry pi 3 plus

Thank you ETA for that nice video and that smooth radio voice. Love it! Can't wait to buy a Pi 5

You should do some videos on your page. Lg wing is an interesting phone would be cool to see emulation on it.

As far as emulation is concerned I think mini PCs is much better option
Yeah always say the same thing. It seems like you can get so much more power for the money.
I can only imagine what we'll see running on the Pi 5 in the next few months
Thanks ETA, I just heard about the PI5 and I’m really hoping for PS2 emulation. I know you”ll keep us updated.

I wonder if the Pi will finally be able to run stuff like Killer Instinct 1 and 2.
Thats also what im here for
I could see Nintendo make an N64-Mini with similar hardware. Sell it for $129.99, pack in 10 games and an N64-style controller with built in rumble.
- Super Mario 64
- Super Mario Kart
- Paper Mario
- Kirby 64
- Zelda OoT
- Zelda MM
- StarFox
- F-Zero
- Super Smash Bros.
- Maybe put an incomplete EarthBound64 as a bonus game to try out.
Hell, a port of the GBA version in english would also be acceptable...not make sense to put on the system, but appreciated.
I feel the market for emulating higher end systems is not on the pi and similar devices as x86 devices are getting cheaper and cheaper.
i3 quad core 3Ghz with 128GB SSD/8GB RAM on 14nm (smaller fab than the Pi and thus lower energy use) is only 70€
When can we buy it? I see nothing on amazon. I may need to listen to the audio on this it's probably addressed. Just dont want to wake my kid right now
I can see it on Amazon
So you didn't get Duck Station running yet? Would be interesting to see the PS 1 version of Ridge Racer running, the PSP version was looking good IMO.
For game emulation (ps1 maybe some ps2) would there be a performance difference between the 4 or 8gb versions? 8gb seems sold out everywhere
@ETAPRIME I think to use the Parallel core your video settings need to be on Vulkan
Want to see switch. Either a Linux port or under android
nice but doesnt offer something over my mini pc beelink ser 5 pro.. i will get one though as im a fan of pi and maybe later comes some kind of pi5 handheld
It's trying on N64 and psp. Give it a few months. I bet it will emulate great.
Can you do a comparison video between Rasp 5B and Orange Pi 5B? If there’s one person that will do an honest comparison is you.
My 5 arrived today. No Vulkan for ps1 in Batocera? Ps1 at anything over 2x res chugs. DC has no Vulkan too? Am I missing something?
It seems that Goldeneye 64 and God of Wars PSP are the standards of emulation testing.
For non-maker stuff, like emulation and video streaming, Rpi5 or Nvidia Shield?
I'm new to this. Kind of lost when it comes to Linux. My brother got a Pi 5, but everything has screen tearing. Trying to figure out how to fix it. SNES, Genesis, everything has screen tearing. We used Retropie and I tried Retroarch install through the apps, it all has screen tearing,.
ETA Prime can you attempt to show us how well Windows 11 looks on this?
That power button has me worried
I'm using batocera in an arcade bartop cabinet so don't want to have to press it to boot up
Plus got to know if it will play killer instinct
Came to this video hoping to see and GameCube, Wii, PS2, Sega Saturn emulation and literally those are the only ones missing 😅😅
I can confirm that Saturn runs pretty good, from what I tried. I played Daytona USA on Recalbox and it seemed to play at full speed.
question - can you do analogue 480p/480i composite video out, hatless? or will you need to use GPIO or an adapter?
Will the PiBoy DMG or PiBoy XRS shells be able to accommodate the Pi 5 ???
I have an extremely high end desktop PC with a 4090 ti and it has its share of snags with N64.
Now that you can Emulate Windows on Android I wonder what is possible there with something like Joy to Key for Windows or something for control.
No doubt this will be cool ,but when you can find small pc like the Lenovo m93p at the same price point and do more I just don't see the appeal
Is Killer Instinct arcade (mame) is finally working at full speed ?
