As a leaf fan for 70 years I can at least say that I have seen the Leafs win numerous Stanley cups in the 60s They did it with a strong defensive core Baun Stanley Horton Hillman This is a must if winning the cup is your priority

I recall the Rangers in 96-97 trying to have an all class core. Mark Messier, Wayne Gretzky, Adam Graves, Luc Rabitaille, Esa Tikkanen, Brian Leetch, Ulf Sammuelsson, Glenn Healy, Mike Richter. They never won the cup. Buying all star class to win the cup is not a recipe for success.
Why does vegas win the cup? Because they employ players with the hunger to win it and most players are paid far lesa than the core.
I remember that team. It was great on paper too.
When the Leafs played Florida or Boston during the regular season you could see they weren’t ready to win a playoff round. We all wanted to see this squad and coach to build success but there’s a structural flaw that’s preventing momentum post season. Goaltending isn’t there, no forecheck, team defence is weak. Flashy goals during the regular season is cool but it won’t win you a round, let alone a cup

You are right MLSE is in the entertainment business and are not fans. Regular season success makes the money. Shanahan was willing to extend Dubas because of his "body of work". This makes it clear that MLSE values the what 45 (with preseason games) regular season home games more than the playoffs.

I think it will be close because of the good goaltending on both teams...Bobovsky is not quite as good in my mind... as Swayman or Ullmark but Florida are a better team and it will be very close next series
@@odonaldcoaker6892 It happens every year. Leafs fans react with emotion. Edmonton just beat the Oilers 1-0. Shots were King 33/ Oilers 13. The Kings were by far the better team but lost the game. In the Bruins/Leafs series, Boston won Game 1 fair and square. Leafs took Game 2. In Game 3, the refs blew a call and the Frederic goal should not have counted as the play should have been blown dead. Had it been we may have seen a Leafs win. It was a close 1 goal game. Game 4, the Bruins won because Swayman was better than Sammy and the Leafs fringe players made mistakes which cost them goals. Everyone is blaiming the core. The core 3 are either sick or injured: Food Poisoning, ankle sprain and head injury/illness. Take away Boston's top 3 players and how would it be? Every year its something. Reilly scored and it was ruled "no goal" when he clearly scored which cost them the game. Tavares had a goal called back which WAS a goal and it cost them a game; that was a couple years ago. IN any case the Leafs do not match up well against Florida or Boston or Buffalo or Ottawa or Montreal or Tampa but do match up well against everybody else. They need to get out of that division.
I do think people have kind of high expectations, seemingly unrealistic ones. They are talking as if Toronto was some world beater during the regular season and should beat Boston no problem and now they are just under performing. No, they finished 10th in the league, far from a great finish, Boston was better than them all year and won every game against them, they had shaky goaltending all year as well, they are pretty much where they should be, losing this series.

Guessing Keefe's comments come from a possible lack of any real dialogue around the star player...love Matthews but his stardom must be difficult to exist beside. The season looked better, later on, as others were given the chance to shine, Matthews cheered that growth and that made it a 'team' sport, for a change. Looked like this spirit was getting lost, last few games since he was trying for #70. Think Keefe is right, if they could just use their frustration to 'get mad' and play with passion, maybe a different team. Like Elliot, Kevin and even Nylander said, it may be good for them to 'raise the roof' a bit. Tx guys, you're the best!
Really easy to say blow up the core 4. Tavarss and mariner have a no trade so they not going anywhere for another year. They just signed nylander and mathews for long term contract, they not going anywhere especially mathews. Only way any four leaving is they ask for a trade, but with salary caps no one can really afford them.
The bottom line is after they lose and they will, players will show a little drama and frustration, then climb into their Ferraris and head for the Golf court. The fans back to their daily job routine and fool themselves in the hope that next season will be different

This is a far reactionary comment from my last one which I posted on "This is BIG - All signs point to this" video about hair on ones ass being the difference maker... and don't get me wrong... I'm a firm believer in that still... and just like that saying goes... the difference between men and boys is the price of their toys... well the same can be said for playoff hockey... and this is where we can pretty much sum up that there is no denying playoff hockey is a different game... and with that... each team, each player and each coach/coaching staff needs to bring that much more to the table... talent from players alone doesn't cut it... never has... never will...
If the Maple Leaf's are ever to climb out of this dark hole... its going to take some magic... some luck... and some example... by none other than JT91... the Captain... although he does have enough hair on his head and I'm sure on his back as well as on his ass to lend to others on his team and still maintain his own PH... he's the one that has to get his mojo working...

Now as for saying above... one difference maker that can change that tune is none-other-than Boston Goalie Jeremy Swayman... get this guy off his game already... there's no doubt that if the tables were turned that Boston would definitely be doing the same to Ilya Samsonov...
The only thing bothering me is when you spend 50% of your $$$ cap towards four players and all are forwards... and only receiving this much back on their investment in terms of PLAYOFF performance... anyway... we can say all we want about DEFENSE and yes the Maple Leaf's lack there of in so many ways and for so many years... but when you have 4 $10M forwards... not scoring... well you're definitely not going to win any games if you don't score...
So that means no goals=no wins, no wins=no hope, no hope=no glory... so as long as there is a game to be played... there's always hope... just remember this... when u capture lightening in a bottle... it's all about the timing... and we'll take it at any time... #NowOrNever

Sammy as a goalie, you just don't know what your getting from game to game, very inconsistent play. This team had 8 or 9 seasons with the core 4 and have only gotten past the first round once. Time for a change, this is not working
Sammy ain’t the problem - they’ve averaged less than 2 goals a game - you aren’t winning playoff games scoring less than 3 goals a game no matter who your goalie is.

Marner straight up for Ullmark, or to St. Louis for Pareyko. I know he's not a true #1 d but there's not too many teams that can take an 11 mil winger so your not going to get a haul for him. Plus you still have 4-5 mil to spend on a goalie.

Bruins are just a good team, and so are the leafs. Bruins have ancient history on their side because the leafs haven't beaten them in the playoffs since 1959. One of these teams will go down, and odds are on bruins to go forward. The leafs need answers to the bruins tricks, and they need tricks of their own. I was betting on a 7 game series and I want the leafs to win back home ice disadvantage.
If I was Elon Musk, I'd buy the Leafs, move them to Hamilton and then sell shares of the team back to the Leafs fanbase. Allow the fans to have some significant control of the team.
we just need a good goaltender. this is what has been missing. samsonov has made zero spectacular save. in the playoffs you need a guy to come up big. he has not done it this year or last year. since sundin days we have not had a great goaltender. defense can improve but if we have a great goaltender like belfore, cujo, potvin etc... then we win. all other goaltenders have brought zero success.
