It`s Niels Henning Örsted-Pedersen on the double bass. He toured and played with Oscar Peterson`s trio. He was one of the best jazz musicians in the world. Go listen to to interviews with him were he talks about playing with mister Ben Webster. Mister Webster is one of the most respected names in the history of jazz. Nobody else sounded like him. I miss them very much.
I do not like his gruff style in normal tunes but in ballads his style is unmatched. I wonder why no one today has tried to nail his tone. Most players today want to be like bird or coltrane and be able to be a virtuoso, but this is virtuoso without the speed.
Playing more notes is easier than playing fewer. The artist is he who peels back the layers to the absolutely fundamental. The con he who seeks to add complexity to mask his ignorance. I say this not as a slight to Bird or Trane either.
Ben was sui generis...no one ever sounded like him and no one ever will. His playing on just about any ballad he ever recorded is the yardstick against which all other versions are measured. His medium to up tempo works was just OK, but when things slowed down he was the man. IMO, only Stan Getz comes close.
Pourquoi gâcher l'interprétation de ce grand musicien en l'entourant uniquement d'autres musiciens venus de la musique classique ? N'y a t-il pas suffisamment de très grands musiciens de jazz, capables de l'accompagner, de le soutenir et de tirer le meilleur de lui-même, en utilisant le même langage musical ? Ce ne sont jamais leurs meilleures interprétations, lorsque l'on a fait accompagner par des violons, violoncelles les grands jazzmans. Dommage.

Arguably the premier proponent of the ballad in all of jazz -obviously toward the end of his career; still with all his power.
