Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7 Long Term Review - My FAVORITE Micro Four Thirds Prime Lens?

  • Today I want to share my long term review after using the Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7 II for almost 8 years. This lens is now simply becoming my favorite Micro Four Thirds prime lens especially for my everyday photography challenge. The 20mm f1.7 has been a Micro Four Thirds classic lens and it is really the embodiment of the true Micro Four Thirds philosophy: small, lightweight, sharp, and affordable. I shared my thoughts, experience of using this lens, as well as some sample pictures. I also discussed some potential flaws, and alternative lenses you should check out as well.

    I love this lens, especially the way it does color. I grew up on manual focus. So the relatively slow, noisy autofocus is at best a secondary consideration.

    Thanks Gary, purchased this lens a while back and love it. Part of it was because of the passion you express about it! Quick aside, your audio quality is so good that I can hear the camera strap clips rattling around when you move your hand, a little distracting in my opinion. Perhaps for these types of lens videos just hold the lens and not lens + body. Keep up the amazing work!

    back 2010 I wanted to try MFT after lugging around DSLR's on backpacking trips, one of the guys in my photography club had a GF1 with the original MK 1 lens that he just couldn't get his head around, borrowed it off him, 5 days later I bought it off him.... this lens is so great - its not optically perfect but it renders so nice - yeh it can hunt on some bodies in some shots until you learn just how to use focus and recompose. even with the 15mm 1.7 and so many other fast primes of both Pany and Olympus this is still one of my top 3 favourite lenses on any system I've shot

    The twenty is a good one, I ponder shooting a "single in" forum challenge in February with mine. I do fancy a Mk III version of it, though, with weatherproofing and updated AF motor and/or focus gearing, just faster enough to get it on par with the other prime lenses. I do agree with your opinion that it is not slow, as such, but it is noticable slower than other comparable lenses, the only other M43 lens I regards as equally slow is the Olympus 17mm F/2.8 pancake, but both of those lenses are sort of ancient designs, released very early after the start of the M43 system.

    • @Gary_W

      If Panasonic decides to release the Mk III then I will be very interested!

    I had the MKII version and loved how sharp it is even from f/1.7 it is sharp and more so stopped down. I used it with a Panasonic GH5 for a long time but eventually sold it. While I love the image quality you can get from it, its small lightweight size, it was just the focal length rarely found myself using.

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with what you said regarding the focal length. Back then I prefer something either wider or tighter, like the Pana 15 1.7, or Oly 25mm, but nowadays I found that the 20mm focal length is surprisingly very enjoyable to use.

    I am hoping to get back into photography after a long absence and am considering MFT cameras. Leaning toward the GX85 and a kit lens to start. I have appreciated and enjoyed many of your videos recently. One comment I might mention is I feel you are too close to the camera in this video, and other similar style videos. Feels like you are right in my face, and if this was in real life, I would be compelled to take a step or two back from you. Keep up the great work. Cheers!

    Great video. I tried the 20mm f1.7 on my Olympus EM10 but it felt sluggish. I liked the image quality and 40mm is my favorite focal length but I ended up with Olympus 17mm F1.8, Panny 25mm F1.4 along with Panny 30mm F2.8 macro and Olympus 45mm F1.8. Then I have about 7 or 8 vintage lenses that I adapt. I do shoot film on occasion as well. I remember attempting to try some video one day but it became too much work and took the joy out of photography so I only do it sparingly. I do admire your passion and consistence. The challenge sounds interesting but I don't want to commit. We appreciate what you're doing, however. Peace.

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the comment! I did use this lens back then with Olympus E-PL6 and the AF was significantly slower than with my Panasonic cameras. Seems like you already got a nice lens setup there!

  • @woeihwang
    @woeihwang ปีที่แล้ว

    I have the original version. People complain about its slowness in AF. On my old olympus pen that carrys some truth in it. Not too bad with my em1. This is my favorite MFT lens!

    • @Gary_W

      Same thing with my older E-PL6, the 20mm AF struggles. But on newer bodies it is no problem.

    Is the autofocus of this is better than the kit lens of the g85? And low light performance (social anxiety. I take photos in the night). I am new to cameras and the kit lens of the g85 has been treating me horribly.

    • @Gary_W

    problem with 20mm 1.7 is that it is not working in AFC so it's a big problem when you want to make some run and gun videos, you can set the camera to focus continuously during video (with Panasonic camera I don't know with Olympus) but it will result in choppy focusing for this reason I prefer the 15mm PanaLeica (I own both). No problem instead in photo shooting

    The issue with this lens is it's sharper than both the 15mm and 25mm Leica wide open, it also has more brillance, nicer colors and it's more compact.
    But the AF is almost unusable in AF-C so I just use the 10-25mm all the time, superb sharpness and AF.

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do think the PL15 is still sharper than this guy, but not by much. AF-C is definitely not usable at all, but AF-S is okay. 10-25mm is definitely a much better lens though 😁

      @@Gary_W I tested 4 copies of the 20mm and two of the 15mm, each time the 20mm was sharper than the 15mm wide open. However, I think the 15mm is sharper closed down yes. But sample variation is huge.

    I have a love hate relationship with this lens. I love the size and focal length, but that is where the love stops.
    I owned the MK ii version and some of my favourite street shots are with this lens.
    However, during my street walks I find the focus to sometimes be too slow and a lot of my photos were out of focus when dealing with busy or moving subjects which is a shame because this lens and focal length is perfect for street photography.

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  ปีที่แล้ว

      The AF speed is a bit of a problem with this lens especially with some older camera bodies. I sometimes switched to Pan Leica 15mm f1.7 for faster AF speed during street photography.

    This is one I keep going in circles with: The Panasonic 15mm F1.7 is exactly the wide angle I'd want, but it's around $550 (USA price). For less than $300 I can get the Panasonic 20mm F1..7 and save money, BUT it's a tighter field of view. For under $200, I can get the Panasonic 14mm F2.5, but it's about a little more than 1 F Stop of low light capacity I lose. I do have the Panasonic 9mm F1.7 lens and I love it, so I could use that lens and crop to make it look like a 15mm lens. For $50 less that the 15mm F1.7, I could purchase the 14mm F2.5 AND the 20mm F1.7 lenses. Tough choices....

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Luckily I have both the 20mm and the 15mm. To be really honest with you, the 15mm is a much more flexible lens for everyday use especially if you can only have one lens. However, the 20mm can give a more pronounced background blur and has that ability to cover both 17mm and 25mm by stepping forward or stepping back. For everyday photography, landscape, sceneries, I prefer the 15mm, and for street photography, product photography, environmental portrait, I prefer the 20mm.
