50mm 1.2 vs 85mm 1.4 Comparison

  • Trying to choose between the 50mm 1.2 and 85mm 1.4? In this video I show you guys a comparison of the two using the same settings + shooting in the same spot.
    Also, I know these lenses are very expensive...I started photography with kit lenses, then eventually upgraded to the 50mm 1.4. After 8 years of professionally photographing I recently JUST bought the 85mm 1.4 THIS YEAR. I put off buying it because it cost so much money. So don't worry if you can't afford these exact lenses, if you are looking for something a bit more affordable the 50mm 1.4 and the 85mm 1.8 are GREAT alternatives and do NOT disappoint.
    THANK YOU AMELIA FOR MODELING

    To me, the more important comparison would be both of these lenses with the same composition. Meaning, moving a few steps forward to fill the frame the same way with the 50 as you did with the 85

      Completely agree. It doesn’t make sense to compare lenses with not the same composition. 50mm vs 85mm is not that bad but imagine if she does the same thing with a 50mm vs 135mm without taking a few steps back/forward.

    • @Ruseofpoison
      @Ruseofpoison 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Agreed... I don't see the point in comparing the two lenses if the composition isn't the same....? Especially the "waist up" shots, where neither one was really "waist up" anyways.

  • @tg9978

    I think to compare, it needs to be the exact same shot with both lenses...moving forward with the 50mm.

      This comparison serves no purpose. She should have moved away 85mm or come closer with 50mm so that the frame composition would be identical, and then we would see the difference. The girl completely missed the point.

    This is exactly the kind of video I've been wanting someone to make. Show me how differently 2 focal lengths take the same photo from the same spot. It's a great visual learning experience for the newer photographer. A nice companion video to this would be to then show how you would compose a shot with these 2 lenses to come out with as close to the same image as possible.

    • @annajanina9215
      @annajanina9215 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But the thing is that it basically doesn‘t matter which lens she chooses if she is not moving because you can always crop the 50mm image closer and it won‘t be different from the 85mm because nothing but the focal length changed and the effect (the object looks closer or further away from the camera) is the same. The actual difference between both lenses would be seen if you take e.g. a full body shot with both lenses and move so you change your perspective and the images look totally different

    • @toddbristol707
      @toddbristol707 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Charles Dunkley Agreed. There are other things I want to see as well, which she kinda showed with one of the pics. Framing the model the same between the two lenses shows us the background compression differences between the two. But not having that doesn’t make me not give this a thumbs up! I still appreciate it!

  • @marvin1620
    @marvin1620 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    It would be interesting to see a 50mm lens on a camera with cropped sensor vs the equivalent (75mm or so depending on the crop factor) on a full frame camera so the view is the same. Could you tell a difference besides different dynamic range or sharpness if the aperture is the same on both lenses? I mean for example a different lens compression or something in the background.

    This was a fun video. Jessica and Amelia really were enjoying themselves. Both lenses look nice but it seems like the 85 gets the blurrier background more so than the 50, like from a distance but once you get close both do really well at isolating the subject from the background. Love your videos.

    Thanks for taking the pictures from the same spot, to see the difference in FoV and DoF while having the same amount of perspective distortion! Most other youtubers change distances to get the same framing, but that doesn't make sense, you can't get the same frame if you change distances, because the perspective changes.

  • @jocelynarcentales
    @jocelynarcentales 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That was a tough choice, it seemed both were useful for the shoot at the set distance. But if I was to choose one, I would choose the more versatile one which would be the 50mm
    1.2 because it gives you room to walk in closer and capture the same shot. Just gotta walk a bit and your good. The 85mm 1.4 is a beautiful lens, looked like exact same bokeh too! Incredible! But again, the 85mm 1.4 doesn't have the versitility, it's quite tight and like you said, if someone is just a portrait photographer, that would be a good investment. But I do weddings, and many other things so I need more.. great video! :)

    Thank you Jessica for all your videos, I am totally new to the channel but I am already addictive to watching your channel,,, and one more thing your videos made me choose the right lens to see my future so THANK YOU SO MUCH 📷
    1- 85mm (no need to say anything)
    2- 50mm (it is more balanced with the surroundings and catch the eye interest like hey there are objects with different colors and lighting but keep in mind that all are blurred and the model is our focus)
    3- 85mm (as a viewer seeing the background is the same {50mm has more of the tree and wooden fence than 85mm} and no more objects visible also I like how the sun light behind her left arm is closer as it adds more vibrant color to the shadow) BUT I would honestly say that 50mm looks more naturel for the photo of a model in a garden and typically more suitable for the scene, but I choose 85mm cause it makes the photo more aggressive and adds more blurriness to the tree leaves so it does not distract the eye away.
    4- 85mm (I like how the blur is affecting the fence and sunlight behind her also the tree to her left more than the 50mm but no blur on tree to her right that gave focus depth in the photo also the 85mm zoomed in nicely fitting for the photo more than 50mm lens given the distance)

    ive been using 85mm foor portrait photography for a while now but Im wanting to get a 55mm or 35mm.
    One thing I realise with the 85mm is that if the model is stretching her legs out towards the lens it makes them look really short due to the compression so Ive been considering something wider to use for full body shots

    What you're actually comparing is the ability of a lens to compress the background. Optical testing is so much more complex. You'd have gotten much better comparison results by maintaining the image aspect ratio between the two lenses. Personally, my preference is for the 85mm 1.4. The roughly 1/4 stop difference is nothing to be concerned about especially if the aiming and focus point on your subject is identical.

    the 50 catches more of the background ... without being rude, thats not some optical brilliance, it's a photographer trying to compare two different focal lengths but forgetting to adjust her distance to the subject so that the framing is the same. Check out Matt Graingers channel for a far better explanation of the difference.

      Of all those lens they are cheap version of them. For example if you like the 50mm there is a 50mm f1.8 on all companies system. The canon is cheap as 100€ for example. If you want video I suggest a more wider lens like a 35mm

    Why didn't you have the exact same framing with both lenses? That would have been an amazing comparison. Everyone knows the difference in focal lengths, but to see the difference with the same framing would be of great interest to all photographers. You should do this once more with the same framing for both lenses. It would be an extremely popular video and very very interesting. The present video above as it stands tells me nothing.

    Can we get a comparison between the canon 50 mm 1.8 and the 85mm 1.8. Both those lenses are canon's cheapest lenses !

      Navreet and Ramneet this will sound silly but expensive glass always has better quality obviously if you are budget 1.8 is perfect
      But when you shoot between 1.2 to 1.8 lens the difference is like hd to 4K

    What a been interesting if you would’ve walked in closer on the 50 to see which picture would give you better clarity and bokeh

    I prefer longer lens usually as I normally shoot 105 for my portraits

    Go closer with the 50mm, frame your subject as you would with the 85mm and you'll get get a much better portrait! The 85mm is much better in the zoo, or if you can't get close for a portrait. Its also a very good b-roll lens! both are a must have!!!!

    One of the main reason why 50mm is so popular because if you go closer it is like a 85mm, if you step back a little bit it’s similar to 35mm. I really like you and your videos Jess, but it was a “how not to use a 50mm lens” video for me.
