  • The Perfect Home-Office: Architect Nasir Iqbal
Located on the corner of Street 61 & 48 in F-8/4, Islamabad, Ar. Nasir Iqbal’s designed and constructed around 2012 his residence and home office.
This multi-storied building houses 4 units, which are divided into 5 vertical levels & 2 horizontal sections.
The building houses tenants in the First Floor and Basement whereas Ar. Nasir Iqbal’s family resides on the ground floor. His office covers one of the vertical sections of the House.
The designs are inspired from different aspects of nature. It takes on a tropical style of design which aims to blend with the tall trees on the street.
The House is designed to install contemplation whereas the ambience is imbibed indirectly, taking the viewer through a multitude of experiences and compelling them to interact with nature and experience its many aspects.
The volumetric arrangement is peculiar with reference to the context, the House consciously refuses to impose itself on the milieu rather choosing to create an internal sub-environment in the context and energizing it - much like the Falling Waters designed by Frank Lloyd Wright - which is a rarity in today’s commercialism.
If one was to approach the House from a distance, it would prove hard to distinguish the auspicious form, since the architect has established the conception of an internally inclined atmosphere by use of a potent tool, the foliage.
Not only do the trees and shrubbery act as a screening buffer between the public and private, they also give shape to a unifying design principle, allowing elements of nature to engulf the structure, eventually crafting a symbiotic relationship.
In Ar. Nasir’s words “I have a limited predisposition toward material usage, leaning more towards nature, such as brick, stone and wood, rather than artificial materials”,
The form of the building takes on a volumetric interplay. Cubic Volumes arranged in a spatial grid, float mid-air and spontaneously break the grid and monotony, exhibiting cladding in fair-faced concrete and stone. Bamboo cladded balconies upheld by steel girders protrude at a skewed angle.
The elementary design motivation was not a concept, but a brief. From the get-go, the architect was very clear about the manner in which the project was to develop. The design brief took a holistic approach of how to utilize a plot of 622 square yards, in order to serve the purposes of a residence, a commercial office and a commercial rent-out apartment.
The architect mentions “I consciously opted for the absence of a drawing room, I tend to question and try to revisit the notions of what a house is, and what it should be. I believe design growth lies in such queries.”
The ground floor façade facing the residential entrance primarily consists of full-height glass windows, validating the architect’s aspiration to “drink” the maximum amount of light during the day, yet providing a mechanical bamboo double façade to prevent from extreme heat during the summer months. From the inside these windows permit a vibrant view of the garden, adorned with a curvilinear water fountain, which endeavors to blend the various linear angles coming
together. A strong emphasis has been paid to how and where the materials would come together, in order to achieve the correct balance, which helps the transition from external to internal seamless. The interior environment is an ensemble of vertically arranged spaces connected with one another, varying the height levels of each space, giving the residents a variety of experiences.

Amazing work, love the originality and complicated design of the house, every space compliments each other. Hope we can see more houses in Pak stretching to these limits and experiment rather than sticking to the cookie cutter, copy paste designs. 🏡🇵🇰🔥💯

The exterior finish is minimal and looks great but interiors are over stuffed with a number of materials even on a single space, it dilutes its decency and visibility.

The Exterior is minimalistic every area is portraying itself, however, the interior is just crowded with too much material, it's like everything is blending in with each other. 6/10
