    23:08 Not exactly true on a plane needing to find an airport, lol. I used to be a mixer/loader/fueler/windshield cleaner and truck/trailer driver for a crop spray operation in Ankeny, Iowa. Todd Aviation. Dad Al and sons Greg and Doug would tell me what gravel road intersection to park at after I was loaded and one by one, they would land on the gravel road, pull up to me and I would load their chemicals, top off fuel, clean the windshields (LOTS of bug splats as you can imagine!) and then they would take off from the road. It was cooler than hell having that job in the mid-80's! It paid for my flight training and still had plenty of cash for 'other things!' 🤑

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some places even have grass strips for landing, but those places are rare around here anymore! I think the good ole days of doing things without worrying about liability are long gone, though!

    • @RRRIBEYE
      @RRRIBEYE ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aTrippyFarmer There is NO doubt so many things have changed since the 80's - not going to argue that, but I will say I have seen crop dusters still use gravel roads near our farm. The nearest airport's 30 miles away. We have miles and miles of flat, unobstructed gravel roads here in northern Iowa where I live and the practice is ongoing...liability be damned.

    My late Dad invented and developed aerial application of herbicides by helicopter in the late 60’s early 70’s. This has to be one of the most dangerous flying there is. As a retired Blackhawk Pilot with the U.S. Army, I know this type flying can be as dangerous as a combat environment, not including being shot at.

    I work on helicopters and the stress on a single rotor spray aircraft is tremendous. You notice when he lifts off the truck he is at max load and is very sluggish. Wide turns and nothing drastic till he gets lighter. Not sure what engine he is running. That appears to be a Bell Ranger and they used more than one. Pratt Whitney and Rolls Royce. My local med evac service aircraft has Rolls engines. Lots of power and a good sturdy air frame.

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I chatted with the crewman for quite a while. He talked about all of the intricacies and considerations of flying a helicopter. They run pretty low on fuel at all times to reduce weight, and they have to plan their landing locations. It is a fascinating experience!

      Probably a C-20B RR. That's what all of them that I flew had. I never flew one with a Pratt and Whitney. All of the very early models had C-18s. They were Allison before RR bought them out.

      You work on helicopters and you called it a Bell 'Ranger ' which is a completely different machine although it is the relatively close ancestor of the Bell Jetranger which is what this helicopter is. Never known a Bell 206 to use a P&W engine, although the 407 does have a conversion that I think uses a Honeywell engine in place of the C30

    The pilots are earning big bucks. Usually independent contractors because of the cost of workmen’s comp. They are usually earning a % of gross. 25% of gross was common back in my day. Then the turbo props were becoming more popular. They are faster than the piston engine planes and the pilots were cut back to 15% of gross. This was 1982 in the Phoenix valley. Cotton is sprayed at night in Arizona and parts of Ca because of day time heat.

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I heard something similar. I had heard 20% of gross, which is quite a bit. They can spray 1000+ easily when conditions are right. That’s interesting about spraying the other crops… it really is fascinating how diverse agriculture is across the country. Thanks for the comment!

    Thanks for all the great information one the decisions involved in your day to day. I've been watching farm videos for a while now, and you have the largest amount of tractors in one barn that I have ever seen. It's nice to have a square barn I suppose, but seems it would be more efficient to have a narrow barn with rollups for each of the pieces of equipment. But then again all the equipment is different size so would be a real headache trying to get the right setup.

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you are on to something with the multiple doors. However, it wouldn't quite work for the location of our barn along with some of the lengthier equipment that we put in it. Thanks for the comment!

    • @dhenschel4
      @dhenschel4 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aTrippyFarmer Right - all the pieces are different size, so to have a massive roll-up for each piece would be costly as well as less efficient in winter given all the roll-up seals. I guess it gives farmers an excuse to start up all the tractors in summer to get them going again and everything. Heck, I don't even like to start my lawn mower unless I am sure it is going to run for a while, but I am the anomaly.

    First time viewing this channel, cool video! Helicopters have always fascinated me so I just had to check it out. I fly RC helicopters, and unlike the full scale helis, mine can do loops, rolls, and hover inverted. 😲 You guys have a LOT of machinery, John Deere MUST love you! 🤑 I am also a truck driver of 28 years and I’m an owner operator. You’re right, there’s ALWAYS SOMETHING! You just hope and pray that when your truck breaks down (and it WILL!), the part or parts needed to fix it aren’t on back order for 3 weeks. You are right about that as well. So far, I’ve been lucky. I had an in frame engine overhaul done last May and luckily, Cummins had all the parts. Cost me $47k. I drive through Effingham quite regularly, went through there today, in fact. I just want to say that I REALLY APPRECIATE all of you farmers, working so hard to keep America fed. And as i sit here typing this out I am sitting here at the John Deere plant in E. Since the helicopter can fly as low and slow as it wants to, why does it have to climb out to a higher altitude at the end of the row to make the turn for the next run? It looks like the pilot would just stop at the end, disengage the spray, make the turn at close to a hover speed and then proceed to the other end of the field spraying the next run. I'm sure there is a logical reason just not sure what it is. Enjoyed the video. Thanks

      @@aTrippyFarmer I think it's something that ALL FARMERS will have to consider. Some are ALREADY doing it, VERY SUCCESSFULLY, but, it'll obviously depend on the different soil types, and probably climate differences.

    Back in the day hillers were excellent crop sparing because of what he just said, down draft gets the spray where it needs to get, planes don't get down on the fields like they used to. If you want to watch old school crop duster, don guy Mississippi delta crop duster, the pilot is John Walton son of Sam Walton of Walmart.

    • @aTrippyFarmer

  • @mikebonnett7730
    @mikebonnett7730 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    yes the helicopter has mor down force due too the rotor wash and they can spray at a wider range of gallons per acre partly due to adjusting the pressure on the pump just like the airplanes but they can also fly slower they can actually put 10-15 gallons per acre in one pass for the cranberry bogs. but a airplane overcomes the lack of down force by flying faster and usually lower. optimum height from the top of the crop too the spray boom is 5’ which means the wheels are about 3’ above the crop but anyway by flying faster they create a gust of wind behind them similar to when you are parked on the shoulder of a road and a semi goes by and your vehicle rocks back and forth then add to that the vortex created by wings. if you ever noticed in the movies or at a real airport when a big plane lands and the tires skid and smoke until they get up to the speed of the plane the smoke rolls out away from the plane and then goes up and back towards the center and down and between the gust of wind and the vortex it causes the canopy to move and the vortex exposes the chemicals to reach all parts of the plants. I saw this firsthand when they would do a coverage test where they would put clean water in the spray tank and add a small amount of a dye in the water which would show up under a black light I was amazed at how much of the plants got covered. I worked for a spraying service here in Wisconsin for four summers back in the early 80’s mixing and loading the chemicals and fuel on helicopters both from a truck and from the ground when they were working close enough too one of the four landing strips the company owned or rented from one of their biggest customers which was a big potato operation. they had big water tanks at each landing strip and a sand point driven in the ground usually only about 6’-8’ to reach the water table in the sand county and we ran the wells with gas powered pumps and the same with the loading vats we used another gas powered pump to agitate the water and chemicals to keep them suspended in the water and then pump the mixture into the aircraft. also you are correct in saying that they put less fuel in the airships in the afternoon this is due too the fact that the warmer the air temperature the thinner the air becomes and the less lift it will create and the pilots will not cut back on the loads of chemicals unless they have no other choice because the more they have in the spray tank the more they can spray and the more money they make

    Awesome video except the data on the helicopter vs spray plane is inaccurate. Yes the helicopter produces a ton of downforce at hover and slow speeds, but not as much as a spray plane. If you go into the physics of how these machines fly, you will learn that the heavier machine will always produce more downforce (lift) at actual spraying speeds. So unless the helicopter keeps it below 15 mph, the downforce is significantly less than a spray plane. Not to mention the quality of the spray patter would be trash at such slow speeds. No shade, just trying to spread the facts as it is a very common misconception.
