This drop sent me to the emergency room | Mistakes were made but thats MTB...

- You guessed it, I crashed. I was having a great ride but made a mistake that left me on the ground with a really deep cut. I sat in the waiting room for over 12 hours waiting for a doctor to come staple it back together. All things considered, seven staples in my forearm is a good outcome. I should be back riding by the second week of June.
Through the video I go back and have a quick review of what happened and show how I've properly ridden it in the past. There is also some behind the scenes audio with my emergency contact and what I'm up too while things are healing up!

As and old school guy hanging on to youth. Arm/elbow pads are a must, a surgeon told me once elbows are the worst joint to damage. Very difficult to repair and very long recovery. It may not be cool but armour up
True. I was seeing a girl who worked in A&E and when she found out I was into mtb she told me to wear elbow pads because she saw loads of elbow injuries.
I'm glad you're Ok. Telling ziggy not to send it and go around cracked me up, not going to lie. 😂
Me too, I had a little internal chuckle when I saw him standing on top looking down at me 🤣
Forty years mountain biking, some cracked ribs, multiple broken helmets, bike frames, cuts, scrapes and more.... And this video was still hard for me to watch. That trail is far more technical than how it may appear on camera. Glad you're okay and hope you're back riding again soon! Count me as impressed on so many levels!
Back at it already, so lucky it was just a week and a half off the bike. This is one of those sports where you unfortunately have to play to play even when being cautious. Bet you got a lot of good memory’s over 40 years on the bike!
Man you were putting in a pretty clean lap too. So scary how this just can just happen in a blink of an eye
Absolutely, just came in like half a pedal stroke too hot and that’s all I took. 🤦♂️
@@jordanchaplinmtb so unlucky, at least you had a full size helmet
There's people that have been paralyzed by those freak crashes. Spinal injuries worry me the most because there's recorded incidents where the crash doesn't look that bad.
@@jordanchaplinmtb That's how it happens, I recently came in a little hot into step-down and ended up crashing on a roller the came right after the landing, I sprained my wrist and narrowly missed a tree that would have put me right out! MTB crashes happens quick.
What about wearing all your protections when you ride ? 😅 It's not 100% injury-proof, but it can save some.
Playing yard games with Ziggy doesn't sound too bad. Heal up Brother..
Not at all!
Taking a bad hop is terrifying. Glad your ok.
Damn the Jordans are having a bad week :/
legit!
So right that it could have been much worse. That is a very technical drop due to narrow trail and quick turn. That run should always be done with a friend for safety reasons. Good video.
Glad you’re okay, I’m jealous I don’t have this skill to do this. I’m to old to learn now.
As a multiple instances member of the "over the bar scar club" i used to don my crash pads on sketchy down hills 70 percent of the time. Chose to go native one time and ended up in the E.R. with gash not unlike our video host. Thats MTB for ya!
Classic!!
Two weeks ago I crashed on a descent and dislocated my hip. As you say, these things happen fast. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
A full-face helmet and protective gear is always a good idea when riding technical trails like this. Glad you weren't hurt worse than you were, and hope you heal up soon.
Full face saved me, knee pads also helped!
There are some features I will not ride not because of the feature itself, but because the landing zone is problematic. Add this one to that list!
Couldn’t agree more should always take the run out and run in into consideration, not just the move.
Scary stuff! Back in the day i fell and knocked myself out, while riding with my dog. i came to right away and she was next to me. but working all the logistics out when you need to get to the hospital asap, but there is this dog that you care for.. and oh yeah, big-a** bike also.. it doesnt make it any easier does it..?
All thing considered glad youre ok, and also a big pat on the back for what you handled after the crash until assistance arrived!!!
that is why a helmet is a must, Jesus that's a bad gash man, glad you are ok.
Elbow pads are your friend. Ask any doctor about elbow injuries. It’s such a delicate joint that is never the same after injury.
I accept the risks and don’t need a doctor to tell me more protection is better!
@@jordanchaplinmtbmight be a good idea though to pad up when riding alone?
@@paulclay4293 you’re not wrong.
Yeah, while I love watching guys like you ride that stuff I am never going to risk it. Mind you I'm 51 now so that time came and went. Lol
I finally got my first full suspension in 2019 and chose a light trail bike because I wasn't fooling myself as to what I will ride and what I won't.
Those few moments before the pain hits is almost worse than the pain itself. I know that sounds weird, until you've been there.
Oh man I know exactly what you mean!
Dude so unfortunate! Bummer we couldn’t ride last week. Glad you are healing well. What a great trail and super gnarly way to end the ride 😳 Some awesome lines in there for sure.
Total bummer, I was looking forward to that one! Guess you’ll just have to come back!
Also the E-Bike is also heavy so can be one of the factors the landing was pretty sketchy, glad you're Ok. !!!
Totally, gotta go a bit slower into stuff on the ebike for sure
From what I can see even the best fall. What a gruesome sport. To get better you must make mistakes or you never really ride fast and daring and make big jumps or drops . Nuts but such a cool sport.
Glad you’re okay!
Pandemic and Flying Dutchman! Can't wait to try them out. Never ridden at Burnt Bridge but looks so good! That rock roll looks crazy with an off camber turn right after, and the landing for that drop is so narrow!! 🤘🤘Hope you heal up quick.
So good! Let me know how you like it out there!
wow that's pretty scary. I think you handled it very well tho and nice riding and video. I love the footage with just the riding noise, almost like a sort of mtb asmr! (definitely a new subscriber! )
I recently finally started getting back into mtb after a pretty serious wrist injury that started with calisthenics and escalated with a mtb crash.
Hope you'll recover fast and you and your precious dog will be back on the trails soon !
Thanks so much! Back at it really soon!
Good old Canadian health care system, seems like every year the wait time gets an hour longer. Get better soon.
On the bright side if this happened in the USA you'd have $20,000 in medical debt...
Neither system is perfect, but for how much I pay in taxes I’d hope to at least get something to cover my arm in the first 12 hours. Sat there with it gaping open in a room full of sick people all night 😬
I spent 2 hours with my radius poking through the top of my wrist/ hand, took another month for volar plate surgery. Not fond of this system, I'd rather pay insurance and choose my care provider...
@@LaurentiusTriarius horrible man, nothing like walking into emergency and the board says 13 hour average wait.
Got nasty crash in a small bikepark Les Gets, the lift attendant fixed my wounds and was able to see a doctor that fixed stitched my injury 20 min later. Meanwhile in Whistler i had to carry a random guy who passed out on Garbanzo because the whistler crew didn't care...
I'm with the other commenters- Arm, leg and chest protection are as important as a full-face helmet for this pro-level terrain particularly at this speed. PPE is fairly cheap and I never notice I'm wearing it until it spares me a hospital trip. You are a very skilled rider!! I enjoyed the trip until the horror!
Glad you are okay. That is a gnarly trail. Love your bike by the way. I want the Altitude a lot . Subbed to see more about the bike.
Thank you! Been having a blast on it!
Man that's brutal, glad you're ok and Ziggy was there to take care of you
He’s a good boy!
Get well soon!
Man, that's harsh. They come right out of nowhere, huh? Mine was similar, two months ago, drop, tossed + slammed into the ground with broken ribs, shattered bones in the hand, dislocation of thumb + forefinger followed by ER + emergency surgery to repair hand damage. After years of adventures I'm now out of it for this year w/likely permanent limitations to hand function. However, like you, it could have been much worse. So, peace + healing to you, Bro
Ouch man. Hope you find something that fills the void. I couldn’t move three fingers for the first day, but woke up and they were fine.. scary stuff!
@@jordanchaplinmtb The 'void' is being filled by becoming a gravel bike rider. Pales compared to MTB but just getting out there, climbing hard, is now a privilege. Ride on!
Gnarly dude. Glad you're alright! Wish you a speedy recovery. I'm waiting on a rear hub warranty :(
Recovery’s going good, hopefully the hub shows up soon!
Glad you're doing well
Be safe
that sucks, but I'm glad it's not that hard on your body
happens to the best of us
Could have been so much worse!!
Looking at your video looks scary going down the narrow steep slope. I don’t know how you can do it though. Hope you are fully recovered.
That drop is deceiving. At first glance it doesn’t look so bad… until you add it all up… tall drop to pretty flat landing into rough shale… big rock wall to the left so you naturally head a bit right… land with high speed in loose shale and need to turn hard left right away. Nah… I skipped it.
Yeah risk to reward isn’t worth it imo
Love that 1st trail. 😍
It's so good!
Trails looks so fun!
It’s usually a good time!
Man you can ride ! Recover well.
Thanks so much, already back at it!
Sweet trail and nice riding! I ride the same bike in the uk. Heal quick, happens to the best of us.
Thanks! 🙏
Dang that was rowdy. I felt that one in my body just watching.
Me too 🤣
I componed fractured my left arm and put my tooth through my lip on a drop a few yrs back. Went on vacation next day stayed in a tent on ocean in town. Fished one armed. Rode this morning pretty much ride everyday. That fell sucked. I've got gnarly scars. Lol.
That’s so gnarly!! 😂
@jordanchaplinmtb lol I'm on my morning bike ride now. The story was crazy. I'm glad your good. You and your Dog are awesome!

That trail is nasty... I was a sick run until that, at least nothing broken, and you gained one subscriber !
Thanks for the sub! It was shaping up to be a good one too!
yeah that happens when you run off the trail. lol. hey it got me too lol
Damn that fall looked rough! Hope you're healing up alright. I can't believe your dog went down some of those rock rolls! If you'd appreciate some video advice, I think adding some music or something other than just raw riding would add a lot.
Heal quick and keep riding 🤟
I do appreciate that, I'm certainly open to trying different things on YT. This platform is something im trying to get better at!
“Shoulda worn yer pads, dood!!” Is what my buddy always says to me in these situations (pads typically sitting in my car or at home). Looks like the front wheel slipped off the right edge of the trail’s soft edge….booof!
Big ouf!!
What a trail! Running a trail like that alone is pretty brave on its own too. Glad you’re OK.
The most important question of all though: is the bike OK? 😂
Good run...get better...subscribed
Thanks for that! 🙏
Glad you're okay bro. That was pretty gnarly riding! Question- who makes those brakes and levers? I'm building up a SC Chameleon and those fit the look and performance! Thanks and hope you're back on the trails!!
Back at it, thanks dude!
Those are Hayes dominion A4 in purple. Calipers are that Color too. I have them linked on the home page of my channel!
That trail looks amazing ! Would you be willing to share the location ?
Body Protector Reaflex from leatt, helps alot
78 with a hardtail, that trail may be just a bit too much. Well maybe more than a bit.
35 with a full suspension.. it was too much that day! 🤝😂
Don't ride alone......
Get well soon 😊
Riding alone is one of the most enjoyable experiences out there. Can’t rely on others to do the thing you love. You can l see in the video. I had a safety plan which worked quite well.
Watching that made me shake too, In a scared type of feeling. Glad you're okay! I bet tha adrenaline helped a ton haha!
Totally!! I figured I’d let my emergency contact know what was up right away incase the adrenaline wore off and it got worse.
Thankfully I just calmed down and it wasn’t an issue, but ya never know!
@@jordanchaplinmtb exactly. staying calm is probably the best thing that could've been done in that situation, which is probably what saved you from a lot of pain too!
Bloody lucky mate! Done exactly the same here in Scotland years ago shot my collar bone through my skin it snapped in 2 places, dislocated my shoulder and tore the muscle clean off the bone! It was 15 year ago now still remember it like yesterday but it's only this year I bought a new emtb to get back on a bike it left me scarred for life that mentally aswell! I've not been out on my new bike yet as just set it up changed few things bars stem so on then the weather's turned to rain constantly for about a fortnight as far as we know just now its depressing! But yeah the hospital sent me home for a week with a dislocated shoulder they thought it was a just the collar bone because the way they took the xray from up top didn't show the balljoint sticking out the back of my shoulder I was in absolute agony living with it for a while week popped out n round the back! Then it when they did eventually pop it back in it kept popping out they wouldn't pin it as kept going back in easy or something but in my mind I was like a cartoon image of me pulling the front up and my arm still being attached to the bars! Lol 2024 now 2008 when happened it's kept me off a bike along time finished my DH race days! So this time it's the ebike never riden one or the new geometry or fox suspension it feels so different sitting on the bike being carbon aswell so nice! Definitely a start of a new journey for me after a bad one! Good to see your good 👍
Never fun. Glad to hear it wasn’t worse! At least yard games with Ziggy is always a win!
Ziggy just likes doing anything, yard games and beach walks have been 10/10!
Good idea getting proper medical attention. I got a nasty gash on my arm, (not as bad as yours, but quite deep), while riding a couple years ago. Didn’t clean it properly and ended up oozing pus. Still, have a cool scar to show for it…
Ouch!! I’ve taken care of a few at home, but I couldn’t wiggle my fingers for a bit and got worried 🤣
@@jordanchaplinmtb you definitely did the right thing!
Perhaps ziggy was saying “told you I shouldve gone first. You were too fast.” Lol jk
Maybe get ziggy a doggo backpack that contains some basic first aid. He’ll gladly take the role of the first responder. Heal up fast Jord!
Hahaha I think you’re right, shoulda trusted him!
That’s a crazy trail…
Unlucky with the crash!! Looks like you just went over the edge of the trail!! Would elbow pads have helped with the impact, maybe the arm wouldn't have been as bad as it was??
that's a BIG, akward feature man... too bad about the slip. When it bites, it bites hard. Hope everything heals up well and you get back out there. My dad just had something similar happen to him, 4 inch laceration on inside of arm, .5" deep, road biker hit him and he must have fell on the cassette. Stapled up and surgery for fully popped AC :P
Oh wow, crazy how fast it happens. Hope dad heals up soon!
better then my 25 days ;)
Yeah I’m surprised it wasn’t worse. I’ve had less horrendous falls that put me out longer. Like not getting unclipped on a climb 🤣
wish you the best, it happens, better that than a broken bone
Totally, I’m so lucky!
Makes me nervous just watching this.
Nice riding. Hope u doing well. What settings did u use for ur action4 here? Lg
Thanks!
4K / 24fps, rock solid, ultra wide, auto everything
I’m gonna drop a tutorial on shorts and IG in the next couple days that show my mounts and settings!
@@jordanchaplinmtbthank you 😊
Tough break. Seems like everyone is crashing lately…
Yeah it does seem like that!
seems pretty intense for the dog to be following you down all that no?
He goes his own pace.
It looked like he did the drop well and then what went wrong ?
Was there too much rebound?
Nope, I did unweight and lose the front but that’s no fault of the settings.
How the heck do you ride without gloves? My hand would be slipping all over the place.
I find I have more grip without them!
I never ride without protectors and full armor, something can always go wrong and it's a waste of time to recover and after a fall you get up and keep riding. Sometimes people laugh at the fact that he is dressed like a knight, but anyone who has hit a tree hard a few times or landed on his face without and wearing protectors knows the difference.

It always happens when you least expect it. Got new gen 4 trek rail last month. I was riding very steep trail and some stupid mom let her very small probably 2 year kid get into the trail. Went was getting down from the steep part where alot of stones, trees and roots were in the way and this kid came in there. I hit both breaks, but the bike wouldnt stop i would kill the kid as im 100 kg big guy and the bike is heavy so turned to the side and there was nowhere to ride and the bike pretty much volted and i had pretty bad crash over the bar into stones and trees and the bike landed on the arm. Luckly i was only bruised and had just some muscle pain. Could have ended really bad. The first thing on the mind was the bike though. I thought 10k bike went bye bye on first day. The crashes that you dont expect are the worst.
Is protection just not a thing anymore
Full face helmet and knee pads. Helmet did its job, knee pads did their job.
thats why you usually wear glowes and protections 🙈
After all that no cuts on my hands…
Full face helmet and knee pads.. I was well protected. Not gonna wear a suit of armour!
ooof..Maybe an elbow guard would've helped?
Oh for sure they would have haha
@@jordanchaplinmtb I'm thinking a soft padded guard (CE level 1)would have reduced how deep the cut was on your arm and would not need stiches. Here in the USA a trip to the ER for something like that can easily cost anywhere from $500-$1000 out of pocket with insurance. So I usually wear my $50 elbow pads as it's cheap insurance even if I look like a dork.
@@taol8258 yup totally fair and not a bad choice by any means. Not something I’m interested in doing, I’ll take the odd handful of staples to feel free and mobile on the bike. But I totally get it.
12 hours for staples? I guess it's true, you get what you pay for.
Literally. Such a joke especially being taxed 40 percent.
No gloves, why?
Don’t like em
Nice riding, but man, gloves and pads.
Knee pads and a full face, no gloves.
Always wear gloves and long sleeves. Get well, man!
I thought resuming riding after 3 years of stop and, incredibly, social media algorithms continue to show me videos of crashes and injuries. Is this a piece of advice to let it go?
I started riding again as a 30 year old after 14 years away. Do it, let progress take its time.
Learn from my crash 😂
Are you wearing pads now?
Same as always, full face and knee pads
Why not wear gloves and elbow pads? Is there a reason?
Not wearing gloves causes these kind of things to happen. You should wear gloves
Well, that’s false. Not so much as a scrape on my hand. And the crash had nothing to do with my hand slipping, so I’m not sure where you dreamed that one up 👋
@@jordanchaplinmtb Actually I turned it off as soon as I saw you weren’t wearing gloves. Don’t wear gloves then. All rules have exceptions. More importantly, keep it fun!
12 hours in the waiting room. 1 hour for a bandaid 🩹
Correct 🤯
@@jordanchaplinmtbI'm not sure where you were but I've found the Ladysmith clinic always has shorter waits if your near Nanaimo.
