These guys just happened to be doing it for the Commander in Chief that day. It's very, very normal to have a few soldiers tasked to fetch and carry for superior officers on any given day. The theory being, this frees them to do the work that only they can do. The President was simply using his perogative as a superior officer. It's very, very, very normal.

The last decade or so has been "easy".
They're used to it. In the Marine Corps boot camp, they made us hold out are arms outstretched for several minutes, sometimes holding rifles or boots. Usually as a form of punishment for sloppiness.
And 100% guarantee you they loved it and felt proud doing it. They now have a cool story to tell their kids and grandkids about how they helped out the President of the United States.

So in boot camp we had to hold our rifle by the barrel and arm parallel to the deck. They made us do this a lot! My platoon also won honor platoon taking #1 in drill, rifle range and overall

As a former infantryman in the Corps,, it was my responsibility to follow a chain of command, including the man at the top, the president. Other than not seeing my son get married and being able to enjoy his children, I'm saddened that he never had the opportunity to serve at the White House (which is what he wanted to do), with President Obama. Other than not seeing my son get married and being able to enjoy his children, I'm saddened that he never had the opportunity to serve at the White House (which is what he wanted to do), with President Obama.
