At 4:47, you can still see that Louise Story is still thinking in the "aid" model, thinking "What charity are the Chinese giving to help these poor Africans?" Not thinking in the"mutual benefit' business model at all. Dambisa, you have so much work to do in changing this paradigm. People's attitudes of infantilising Africans are so ingrained and they don't even realise it.

Very true that the Chinese are improving our livelihoods like for instance they did for us construction on roads and bridges and sgr railway. Most Kenyans go to China for that work who are in engineering

I would be hesistant to describe what Chinese do as economics. We need another science for this.

Ha. In the Caribbean we like the Chinese "because they build footbal stadiums and other things we like". Wow. How condescending. What infants Louise Story thinks we are. *If* we like the Chinese in the Caribbean (and of course it's not that simple), it's because they're building highways and other valuable infrastructure.

The fastest way for Africa as a continent to catch up with the rest of the world, is for the 700 million plus sub saharan (non muslim) Africans to put their differences aside and form one super country with one official language.
What you have now is 1.5 billion Chinese people under 1 flag, picking off 1 billion Africans that are under 53 different flags and and many more languages. If the continent can't learn to stand on it's own two feet, the Chinese will strip the continent

That is impossible, africa is too diverse, have too many languages and cultures to unite in one country. You said china is 1.4 billion people united under one flag, you know why that is? China is united because it has always been united for most of the past 2200 years. The multiple dynasties that existed in china are for the most part, eras of a unified china. Africa do not have that history of unification nor cultural unity, thus your pipe dream of a united africa is impossible.
