  • We've finally made it to York, one of the most impressive (and expensive) cities in the UK - but what's it like from a boater's point of view?

    I live in York, and without sounding biased, I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else in northern England. The problem with York is it’s full of people who don’t live here, e.g, students, holiday makers, tourists, so they’re mostly disrespectful! To everyone!

      And race days are a nightmare if you're a resident needing to get around . Best time of the year I used to find was October/ November before the Xmas shoppers all descend

      Really want to visit York but promise I'll behave. Liverpool evokes similar feelings for me, wouldn't be anywhere else but students can make people's lives a misery, not sure if I'm becoming a fist shaking old man or I'm just less tolerant of these kids openly defecating whilst rotten drunk in the lovely local park, leaving mountains of litter, holding raves with pa systems and causing fires with their BBQ rubbish... And if course the age old problem of week night parties going on to 6am plus. (They never used to be this bad but this gen seems super selfish).
      Tourists are mostly ok but of course you get a handful who are just disrespectful, hassle women and girls, create bonfires on football pitches to cook their food etc.
      Plenty of problematic locals too, poverty in Liverpool when I was a kid was severe and we still suffer the effects, it makes some people act hard, makes them nasty, cruel bullies, they've basically had a miserable upbringing and part of them wants to drag everyone else down to their level, they tend to live together in the worst neighborhoods. But mostly people are good, friendly and are no problem to share a neighborhood with.

      Yup, more often than not the trouble in a town is caused by people who are travelling through or on holidays etc.
      I’m now always mindful when I’m travelling, because it’s very very easy to behave badly when you know that you’re leaving the next day, or when you don’t know anyone in the area.
      But yes, it’s very often the non-locals that give everyone else a bad name.

    Correction - regarding the IPA towards the end - it is unpasteurised but it’s also unfiltered that’s what I meant to say! Also La Trappe is a Dutch beer... I’ll learn... one day...

    ' The black swan ' is without doubt the best pub in York and the food is out of this world, I have travelled most of Britain and it tops number 1 pub in my pub league table.

    Totally agree, we used to be moored at Naburn so had many overnight stops at York, great for people watching until 11pm but then we got fed up of people jumping on the boat, standing on the side and using the river as a toilet, then being woke up at 6am by the bottles getting emptied into the dustcart from the pubs (usually the Lowther),
    The boaters facilities were near the tourist boat pick up point, and they needed attention, then they built the posh restaurant and knocked them down,
    Sunday morning cruising become a game of dodge the debris in the river from the night before, whilst avoiding the rowers!
    Since moved the boat onto the Yare in Norfolk, totally different and feel more secure, but a lot more hire boaters without much consideration to moored boats,
    Found your channel after watching your BBC programme, looking forward to the next series.

    Yes York the last time I was in York was in the 80s and the Railway Museum wasn't half as Large as it looks now I'd love to go now but can't because of my health.
    Anyway thanks for your vlogs as you take me to places I can't manage at the moment maybe next year?
    However keep up the great work and looking forward to Cranking along the canals a little further down the Cut.😁👍

    Your absolutely right everything you said,first night moored outside Museum gardens I felt the boat move.Looked out the port hole two guys just about to look under my front canopy,they had already had 25ltrs of diesel from under my stern canopy.And the way the river rises after heavy rain is scary,saying that I loved the place,also Ripon and Boroughbridge are amazing.Definitely going to cruise up there again,it learnt me a lesson I am a lot more security conscious now so thanks York.

    Man I'm enjoying these videos. Ought to keep me going for a couple of years. York seems like a cool place. Anyplace you look, throw a stick and you hit something historical protected by Heritage Laws. Here in Ontario if I throw a stick the only thing I get back is my dog waving his tail.

    Liked and Subscribed. I am from the United States and I enjoyed this video on York, both the good and the bad, all good information. I think this is a good format, slip in quietly on your boat, hit up some of the interesting sights, shops, pubs and then quietly slip off to the next town, 007 like. You don't get this kind of tourist information from some of the big canned channels.

    Great video Robbie! I visited York last year and stayed at the Exhibition pub overnight. It’s a cheaper place for a b&b just outside of the walls. I get what you mean about how busy York gets though. Still a great place to visit and go round the pubs 🍺

    York is a beautiful city but very expensive. It's dependent of tourism. Historically, famous for it's chocolate (Rowntrees) and Terrys (chocolate orange). I lived in Acomb for two years before moving to Leeds. Your video was excellent. The NRM featured - a must for all visitors. Great pubs and super food. Your humour came through - your biggest asset for me. Thanks for taking me along

    lived in York for 5 years when attending university...four years hons degree then 1 year PGCE to become a teacher....it was peaceful and quiet back then in 1990,s now ruined like many places by the drunken yobs and other miscreants...loved walking the wall as a way to relax after a hard day studying and the Railway Museum was my favourite hangout...loved the history...of the trains and the city itself..there is an old train in there called Copper Nob which was once on display in Barrow in Furness .which has a big dent in the boiler caused by a bomb that hit the station when the shipyard got bombed in WW2...there is a pub down by the river that has markings on the bar/wall that records the height of the floods they get...amazing just how deep they get...There is a huge variety of Bars and Pubs in York - over 365 it is said - that is one for every day of the year! There are Real Ale Pubs, traditional pubs, Irish Bars, Cocktail Bars, Beer Gardens, student Bars, Chic Classy bars and Music Bars. All Bar One....

    York is one of my favorite spots, if left to my own judgement I would have assumed that York is the perfect mooring spot, just as the Rowntree caravan club site is one of my favorite caravan locations. Having read your account I can clearly see why York is probably only suitable for a very brief stop in a canal boat - the journey to get there up the Ouse looked like quite an adventure as well. Your videos are fully of very useful info and are completely nuts - keep up the good work.

    I'm not a boater but I think you would take a hell of a risk mooring beside the Kings Arms. It's a hotbed of alcohol fuelled violence and a big cabin cruiser was set on fire and completely wrecked about 4 years ago.

    I'm a northerner that currently lives in London and loves York, I was there in March staying at the 'old station' if you've not looked at Butterfly Films on you tube you may find it interesting! I'm sure he composes his own music, very slick. Not as good as your videos though. After watching you today it seems anything to do with transport in York is a nightmare, you want to try to get a car to the railway station it takes an entire day, you just have to park and then walk .As always your video was great and I really liked the section on the bridge especially the girl with the long hair throwing her head back. That was really lucky!! I doubt I'll ever take a boat there but I'm checking out rightmove this afternoon. Thanks.

      Rightmove back to York? I'd love to live there but would have to win the lottery to do so! Girl on the bridge (my mum wants to paint all of those figures) typical of people coming to York for a fun day out - but was videotaped from the bus which is probably one of the best ways to come and go 8^)

    Robbie, enjoy your videos, thanks for the effort! My wife said I should send you a link for the Eva-Dry dehumidifier. We used four of the small ones on our year long cruise on a 45x'16' cruiser. They work really well and are very quiet and low power consumption. Bath towels never used to get dry, but with the driers running that problem disappeared. They do have a small water tank but that is the only issue. I modified one by drilling a hole in the tank then place the unit in the sink. Jim

    Hi Robbie - recent convert to you TH-cam channel after seeing the TV series. Love it! I’m from York but live in London, i get back ‘home’ often though and wasn’t looking forward your video after seeing the title, however, I think you’ve pretty much hit the nail on the head! Nice one. Would like to be able to show you some of my York highlights sometime. BTW, have you ever considered a Brompton bike? One would be great for the boat. Keep cranking it!!

    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jonathan and welcome aboard my TH-cam channel! To me Brompton bikes suck, they are the least coolest thing imaginable and they don’t even save space in fact they take up too much room on the boat but i get why they are popular 😂

    I used to live in York as a kid then a short train ride away and the drunk problem is definitely worse hen parties stag parties and race days and the like. When I was a teenager I used to get the train to York on a weekend to go shopping bowling or the cinema, I love York to visit but i don’t think I’d want to live there now. I’d certainly worry about mooring a boat with how quick the river can rise when there’s a lot of damage rain in the hills I’m sure there’s a pub that’s got markings on the wall of the flood heights.

    My understanding is the old Elsan point was lost when the Harome crowd built the pricey Star in York place. Where do you splash your boating boots in York these days for free? (Hint: Some might suggest the Kings Manor next to the art gallery ;)
    Good point about need for secure moorings. Having read about York float-aways, I bought a few yards of goat chain and padlocks prior to trip to Leicester but happily didn't need them. Must try the Minster Inn. Never been. Cheers, Steve, actually from York-ish.

    Robbie. The best place in England to walk around the entire city is Chester not York. It's only possible to walk around half of the walls in York whereas Chester it's almost complete. And it's more friendly! And you can walk along the 'Rows' (elevated streets) that they don't have in York.

    Hey Robbie, note about the Belgian Beers: La Trappe is actually a Dutch beer (www.latrappetrappist.com/en/), Karmeliet is pronounced 'karmeleet' in English. Just had that last one yesterday myself in Bruges after a bike trip, always a delight.

    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    An interesting video but as you were talking I was noticing the way you decorate your boat. Specifically, between the 6 string instrument and the throw buoy, over your left shoulder, is a bottle which looks quite right. Could it be Drambuie or another type of Scotch libation?

    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha ha that bottle has become a bit of a star of the vlog - it's a bottle of 'Monkey Shoulder' blended malt scotch whisky, bought by one of my Crank it Crew members. Also the 'throw buoy' is real! It's got a Baywatch logo on it but it does work!

      Yes John I think CaRT are just tip toeing around all the other commercialised areas of the waterways there unfortunately which is not right but that's capitalism. Great idea about Europe, has been on my mind for a while,, Imagine a Belgium booze cruise that would be perfect - although would have to leave the NL in blighty. Anyway I will do a European tour at some stage (maybe even before we leave the single market, will we won't we who knows). Thanks for watching!
