Thank you for doing a negative painting tutorial. I struggle with negative painting all the time and am so pleased I found you on TH-cam. I hope with practice my brain finally gets it! Again, thank you for posting this.
Oh thank you so much!!! I so appreciate your comment! It may look complicated and difficult, but once you try it a few times, you understand it more and more! I hope you give it a try!
I’m sorry I’m just seeing your comment! Thank you for the kind remarks, I do hope you tried it! I use a nice, small brush and it takes patience and practice! I mess up, A LOT 🤣
This is SO beautiful, and I can't wait to try it myself. I don't have heavily pigmented paints, but I'm going to still try. I've only been painting for about a month, and I'm loving it!
Angie Ochoa oh good!!! You don’t need heavy pigments for this project, you slowly build up the layers so your paint will be perfect! Please share what you do, I can’t wait to see it!!
Funny...I dont know why, but I would’ve thought that you’d be working from distance to closer in layers. But now I see why it has to be the other way around. I love it! Thanks!
Oh thank you so much! Im so excited for you to try, you can do it! It takes patience, and I recommend doing two at once so you can work on the one while you wait for layers to dry!
Thank you for the tutorial, Jessica. This is the first painting I've done with watercolors that actually made sense and worked for me, and I'm eager to try it with other subjects. Well done!
Really appreciate your sharing your knowledge and a full video with explanations. Have been keen to experiment since past 5-6 years, now feel I can handle it:)
So good to see you using Koi paints. I love them, but they are rarely considered in tutorials about brands of pigments and paper. Love your tutorial, too.
Hi Jessica, just found your channel, so happy!!. I have always been very intrigued by negative space paintings but have been a bit hesitant. I have seen others but your tutorial actually gave me the confidence to try. Your paintings are amazing!!!, there is so much more to them than others I have seen. Thank you for the inspiration!.❤
@@JessJidasArt Well, I have actually tried this today, and I find it a lot more difficult than I thought in the beginning owing to finding the colors that go nicely together AND to not getting them muddy ... It will take a bit of practice to come up with something as beautiful as your color scheme, but I will persist! Very interesting technique ... 🤔😁👍
I'm in love with the colors! Good teaching! You're going to do very well. I told Denise at InLiquidColor color the same, and look at her now! Hope you keep going.
So fun. I keep painting this... Still have trouble varying the colors and going too dark too fast, but it still always manages to look keel.. Which is so satisfying! Ty for this. and it has helped me understand beg. Painting in a way I couldn't before 😁
That's beautiful. Can't wait to give this a try! I'm not Brilliant with choosing colours though, I seem always go want to use all the colours of the rainbow in every painting which doesn't always work!! I need to choose three cours and stick to them. Very difficult! Thank you for this lovely tutorial.
Hi, and thank you! If you stick with the 3 primary colors (red, blue and yellow) you can make the rainbow from there! You just have to be careful to not mix compliments (yellow/purple, red/green, orange/blue) or else you’ll get mud! ❤️ I’m excited for you to try it, I’m sure you’ll make something wonderful!
I'm speechless ... This is such an extraordinary instruction video about the negative painting!👏👏👏 A huge Thank-You! Sending you a big hug 💞 BTW your students are really lucky to have you as a teacher ❤️
this is by far the best explained tutorial on negative space I've seen! What a pity you've got only a handful of vids on your channel. Thank you so much for your time & energy you put in this one. As a beginner I really appreciate your work
Thank you so much! I am a high school art teacher and originally made it for my students! I’ve got more ideas in the making, so hopefully I get more videos made soon! I appreciate your comment, I’m so glad the video worked for you!
@@JessJidasArt ah, I thought it might be great if you're a teacher. My own art teacher (many, many moons ago) was pretty meeh. Happy students you've got :) & now I'll drop in from time to time & hope for the best ;)
@@JessJidasArt I drew out my layers of trees just last evening to practice drawing the trees. I have the Koi set of paints also. I think I might just do three layers, but I love that fourth layer that you did. Love those colors too.
@@joycestevens376 Oh fantastic! It does take a lot of practice and patience to wait for layers to dry and to paint around all the little branches. Please share what you create! Im sure it will be wonderful!
Great demo. One question I had is why you can draw all the trees in first because once you wet watercolor paper you can easily damage it if you sketch on top and each time you add more water it is even more delicate. I find this true even on high quality watercolor paper.
Great question! I usually draw very lightly before I paint. When the paper is fully dry you can draw over your sketch again, lightly, if you can't see it. Ive only had a problem if I draw on the paper when it is damp or wet!
I haven't tried that with the negative space painting, I feel like that would be more challenging but totally worth trying! I have done it with traditional painting style, working from back to front with the closest trees being the darkest... Ill see if I can expiriment with that!
@@JessJidasArt I think you'd have to draw all the trees first and start painting around the back ones first. And then paint in the front tree last, so that would look more realistic, but it's not the technique you're showing here.
Beautiful work! One thing I wish you had done is show how to deal with the tape allowing the paint to bleed into your white edge. I imagine you may have used some white gouache paint to cover up the bleed through? I am also very thankful that you have included some pages to download! Many do not do that unless it is for a price. I am going to subscribe now!
Oh that is great suggestion! Sometimes the paint bleeds under no matter what, so annoying! A Magic Eraser sponge, if used carefully, can remove the paint! You just have to be careful you don't rub too hard and destroy the paper. Otherwise I will get a mat cut to the image and crop out the oops when I put it in a frame...lol!!! I appreciate the follow! I love to help out when I can, I wish I had more time to make more videos and resources!
@@JessJidasArt Yes, those darn erasers will eat the paper. I don't trust them. lol I have never used gouache but have seen videos with it and it just might cover an oops. Seen other artist use it for touching up highlights on watercolor paintings. Yes, time to create art is hard to come by, we always put the creative stuff on the back burner. Life should be the other way round! Do fun stuff first and chores later! LOL what a mess we would have!
@@laurfincher8137 I totally agree! Creativity first, lol! Gouache works okay, sometime you can still see through it tho...but its great for highlights and such! I think the higher quality the better too.
Hi! Thank you for your comment, and fantastic question! It is totally up to you. Sometimes I leave them full and fluffy, other times I will add in shapes and darker values to mimic open spaces, leaves and branches. It’s fun to experiment and see what techniques work for you!
Thank you. I followed along and it turned out pretty well. I will do it again for sure. What size paper are you using in this video? Also, you show a different finished piece that had subtle flowers on the left side. How did you get that effect? Perhaps, did you drop water on wet paint? Thanks again.
Hi Kathy! I’m so glad you tried this, I would love to see your trees! It’s the same finished work but more close up so you can see the details. The “flowers” you are referring to are blooms created by sprinkling salt in the first layer of watercolor and waiting for it to dry! That’s my favorite technique to use ❤️
This is so beautiful. Thank you sharing what you know and for making it so clear. I am new to watercolour and absolutely love the colours and the effect. Would you please send me the detailed PDF that accompanies this lesson.
Love this! Question-on the reference piece you showed-for the textured look (I am thinking you used salt?) was that done on the first layer? Or did you add a final layer to do that?
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner! I typically use Canson (LOVE their XL mixed media sketchbooks!) I basically just use whatever I have laying around, and I don't usually know what that is once it is free floating around the house! lol! I haven't found a specific paper that I HAVE to use, but I do notice a significant difference in how these negative space paintings turn out based on the quality of the paper. Higher quality is better!
I like it a lot! Thanks for this step by step watercolor tutorial. Which paper brand do you use? Mine is a watercolor paper but will buckle for sure with so much water and it annoys me so much >.
Using a block watercolor pad like this one from Arches helps a lot with buckling! www.amazon.com/Arches-Aquarelle-Watercolor-Block-press/dp/B0007XDHGE/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=watercolor+block&qid=1558458209&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1 Also, making sure the paper is at least 140# helps a lot.
