She never saw her roommate again. When she went outside the city was littered with bodies of students. One student only had half a face, as the other half was crushed by tank treads.
This is a very similar situation to how the protests in Romania started against the communism. Fortunately here, despite being ordered to shoot the civllians, the army rioted and sided with the people ❤️

It goes far beyond pretending.. they actively try to erase their steps and part of their 1000000+ people in re-education camps that're being brainwashed as I type this are also punished if any of them looked up such things on the internet or asked about it to a "friend" that reported on them. Due to their social credit system rolling out, people are keeping tabs on eachother and those that report mishaps get points essentially for rating out friends.
They get angry and will cancel trade deals if foreign governments even speak out about it. They're doing the same thing to Hong Kong now. They demanded prior to the G20 summit that no country shall mention anything to do with the Hong Kong protest. Not a single country brought it up. Not one. Should that country have been of the Western world, China and others would have made it a point to bring it up. They would have made the biggest deal out of "demands" and you'd see headlines saying "China defies Western hegemony" but no country shall defy China, except perhaps for the United States.
I think the whole "pretend" thing is an extremely ignorant soft handed slap to the realities of the Chinese government.
They did more than pretend.It is not even mentioned in their history books.The citizens do not dare even bring it up.Not long after the incident Tiananmen Square was bulldozed,rebuilt,and renamed.
