  • In this brief video, I'll go over some tests I did relating to Project Zomboid's exercise system. Many players believe this system to be incredibly useless, and while I partially agree with this statement, I don't think it's entirely true. By the end of the video you'll have listened to my tips for exercise and when you should do it, which should help you in future runs.

      As amusing as the redundancy is, I believe this is one of those cases where it's still one word. XP is just short for 'eXPerience' rather than Experience Points.

    I got my character up to 10/10 Strength and Fitness. I did the grind, got the dumbells and barbells. Maxed my protein intake, dosed up on painkillers and antidepressants. And exercised for ingame weeks, irl days.
    I was feeling elated, I hit that milestone I can now carry maximum loot and run for days.
    Then the first loot run out I got bit and died.
    So No, exercising is NOT worth it when tou can het bit and die so quickly afterwards. Nevwr doing that grind again.

    Also I'm pretty sure having high fitness lets you exercise for longer. So that's even more reason to start with athletics and then level strength.
    But realistically speaking you just start with the strength or fitness level you want because unless you're the kind of player who plays a character for months there is no way you're gonna be leveling either.

    • @WithoutShield
      @WithoutShield  หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Yes this is correct. Fitness lets you do repetitions faster as well as reduces your fatigue but it isn't noticeable unless you start with fit or athletics like you mentioned

    • @foggy_nights
      @foggy_nights หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also, at 9 fitness you get a boost to recovery thats massive, 9 fit is a much better level than trying to reach 10. it means you can work out more times a day as well
      honestly worst part of low str is carry weight, combat isnt as terrible as might be implied bc of downed/crits. even on my characters i start and quit after a few days, i usually aim for 9fit/4str. kinda locks you into a few of the occupations, but most are memes anyway.

      Can definitely go longer with Strength, made someone who was strong but obese and was surprised he was able to exercise far longer than my other characters.
      Thought it'd be backwards.
      BUT WAIT, Cardio lets you get more out of exercise? Not just go longer? Or am I missing something?

    Gaining strength and fitness through exercise is worth it if you're playing for the long term. I've gained 3 levels of strength and 2 levels of fitness in about 6 months of in game play through just an hour of burpees each and every morning. It's very much like real life. Don't expect any gains by trying to grind it out with 10 hours of exercise a day within a week. It doesn't work like that.

    • @WithoutShield
      @WithoutShield  หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Except it does (sort of). If your regularity is high enough you could just grind out an entire day with just exercise. It's certainly not how real life works but oh well. But you're right, if you're planning to play for a long time exercise can be worth it over some time but if you're a new player who most likely won't make it past 1-2 weeks, id still recommend saving exercise for later just because of the soreness and the value of time early game.

    • @Eidako
      @Eidako หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@WithoutShield There's overlap between zombie survivalism and survivalism in general, a.k.a. prepping. A large part of prepping is self-reliance, which means finding replacement for needs in a post-industrial world. Growing your own food, canning it, generating your own electricity and wiring its power distribution, etc. Some people play Zomboid like a horror movie, just sneaking from house to house and living off the loot, while others like myself play the long game of being alone in the world. I've almost entirely depopulated Muldraugh and have a compound where I'm building up a resistance movement with a few NPC survivors (mod), so a good chunk of my play involves non-zombie-related tasks like brewing vinegar in barrels (mod) or installing solar panels (mod). The zombies are just an occasional nuisance who break my walls when a helicopter or plane flies over.
      Metalworking is definitely a long-term survival skill. Have to agree pottery is going to have limited use unless you were lost in middle of the Canadian wilderness with zero resources.

    On 1 hand it makes sense that strength and fitness have higher reqs than most since you gain exp from carrying around heavy loads and fighting zombies so you’re gaining exp from playing the game, buuuut exertion and fatigue means you’re insane if you’re gonna grind those stats without the ability two fight back and run away
    They really should let you also gain fitness from jogging, and let you gain strength from dismantling wooden and stone items

      Make sure you choose the correct difficulty! Apparently lots of people choose the hardest one that is the top selection in a new game. Like Shield said, spend some time with learning basics on YT or in forums. You'll probably want to grab a few mods too, as the base game isn't fully fleshed out and has some "why tf is that not a thing" moments in it. Have fun and don't get discouraged too quickly! I feel like this is wrong, fitness is the last skill you will level to max because its passive gain from running and sprinting is too low, while for strenght you only need over 50% encumbrance, i play with 0 fitness and strenght characters and i end up double the levels of strenght of what little fitness i have WHILE doing squats which are only fitness xp, after an ingame week i end up with level 3 strenght and level 1.5 fitness, sometimes lower. It took me around 110 days to lvl up strenght 1 lvl naturally, I mean, not doing any excersises just playing, and it really helps to get these 2kg extra carry weight on you. Upong seeing that I thought well might give exercising (strenght primarily) a chance, since I had a dumbell on me, but tbh I think it's way too difficult, I don't know how it works when you hit max regularity at something but at no regularity you get muscle exertion 12hs in so it's impossible for you to get out your base for as long as you exercise, and you gotta deal with the emotional impact on your character and the fact that you're eating away your reserves, so no I don't think it's worth it as of now, maybe they'll change something about it in b42.
