- The IAT sensor measures the temperature of the air entering the engine's combustion chambers.
The IAT sensor is an NTC resistance, that is to say a negative coefficient resistance, when the temperature of the air that passes through it rises then the resistance at the IAT sensor terminals falls.
There are independent IAT sensors that go in the engine air filter, while other versions of IAT sensors are integrated either in the MAP sensor or in the MAF sensor depending on the engine.
When there is a problem with the IAT sensor, fault codes (DTC: Diagnostic Trouble Code) may occur, fault codes P0112 and P0113 are presented.
The P0112 IAT sensor trouble code occurs when the voltage input to the computer (ECU) is less than 0.5V under all engine operating conditions.
The solution to the P0112 code failures is to eliminate the short circuits either in the sensor wiring, in the connector or in the IAT sensor itself that presents a short.
If the IAT sensor wiring presents a short due to insulation failure, it is enough to fix said connections to eliminate the P0112 code.
The IAT sensor also produces P0113 fault codes that correspond to the presence of 5V at the input of the computer (ECU), this code is presented when the IAT sensor fails, an open circuit of the IAT produces the P0113 code.
If the IAT sensor presents an open circuit then P0113 also appears.
In the cases of integration of the IAT sensor- or MAT sensor as it is also known, in the MAF or MAP sensor, the procedure is the same to determine faults P0112 and P0113: open or short wiring.
If the multimeter measurements on the MAT sensor of the MAP/MAF sensor present a short or open circuit, there is no other solution than to change the sensor completely.
