I'm sitting here with my '66 MusicMaster II. I'm the original owner but I modded it back in the late 70s. In the late 2000s a luthier friend restored it for me. It isn't worth as much as an original but it'll be here until my hands give up. Thanks for the video, Tomo, it made me drag this one out to play for a while.

What I really enjoy about the Duo Sonic series is the shorter scale length. For me with smaller hands, having the extra help for reach between frets is helpful.

That's a cracking guitar. Lucky man!! I have a Squier Bullet Mustang which is very like that Musicmaster, but with the 24" scale. I got it as a swap for some other gear so it was a free guitar to me. They are really cheap across here in the UK anyway. It's the scale length which makes it nice to play. The tone you've got in this video is beautiful, even though most of it is in your fingers!! :-)

Cool! Love your demo of this instrument. Got the burst I see...1962 and early 63 were the last years of the burst for the Musicmaster. The Musicmaster launched many a player into the world of music. Jimmy Hendrix even played one. I have a 1963 Musicmaster. When I bought it ($100) the original owner had already stripped the paint to to a refinish. He passed away before he completed it. His son (who sold it to me) said that it was originally a "crappy looking red color," which lead me to believe it was a red mahogany for original color (one of only two colors offered in '63). That color did not wear well which is why it is rare to find one in good shape. I did refin it in Fender's original red mahogany color. Other than that, the rest is original. It sits on display in my home studio and every now and again I will let a real guitar player play it (I'm a bass player and not much of a guitar player). Thanks for the video!

@@michaelquillen2679 Is the body wood mahogany? Those music masters and duosonics that were painted red had actual mahogany bodies, it wasn't part of the color. I'd very much like to add one to my personal collection of music masters/duosonics. There's a really excellent one for sale on reverb. I have the feeling those guitars will spike in value someday. But if yours has an alder body, it PROBABLY didn't leave the factory red.. unless it was the sunburst.

@@graysonschissler6215 Fender did lots of crazy stuff back in the early 60s/pre-CBS days. Still have a custom color in sprayer, yet no more Telecasters in the ready room? Bring in some Musicmasters/Duosonic bodies! Still have Red Mahogany in the sprayer and ran out of mahogany bodies? Bring in the alder bodies! Yep, Fender even sprayed several Musicmasters in Daphne Blue and Shell Pink in order to appeal to the young girls. Also, Fender was really pushing the Red Mahogany color at that time as a attempt at going head-to-head with Gibson’s Cherry Red SG Junior and SG Special models. Nevertheless, when it came to colors/models/wood combinations, anything was possible back then!

@@michaelquillen2679 Haha I made sure to say probably. True fender did do some crazy stuff like you say as not to be wasteful. But seems like the red mahogany guitars are a hair more prevalent than those other oddballs we are mentioning. I was told fender was spraying Dakota red with no undercoat on those specific mahogany body instruments. Like you mentioned, in a direct attempt to compete with the Gibson entry level stuff. Also factory refins in red for the student guitars are not unheard of either.. thanks for taking a minute to nerd out haha

They are very low ohms. These pickups are exactly the same as strat pickups from the same era but don't have staggered pole pieces. I LOVE musicmaster pickups, however I do find that I have to change volume settings all over my pedalboard when I play them because the output is just so low. On the other hand, they are fantastically touch sensitive and for lack of a better term sound 'vintage'. A musicmaster through a cranked tweed champ is an amazing sound. Part of the magic is that those low output pickups arent completely overpowering the tiny little speaker at full volume like most other guitars
