I've found that if you roll up those pads in the opposite (against the curl) direction you can get them to relax a little bit and not want to curl up so much the next time you unroll them. Great vid.
I had to mention this with the number of times you talked about the curling up of the sleep pads. The cheap sleep rolls are easy to get to not curl just roll it the oppsite direction with some pressure until its flat. You dont need tent stakes to catch on or rip your sleeping bag or put holes in your pads Another good budget backpack is the teton sports 4000. This was my first backpack they are getting more expensive it was 45 dollars at the time i think they are closer to 70 now as the brand gains popularity I sent both of these videos to some friends considering backpacking. Great stuff man thanks for the content. You might convince me to switch to hammocks some day One major thing is i dont recommend people use a tarp shelter starting out unless its early spring or late fall (Which require a warmer sleeping bag). Bugs can really ruin a trip and the idea of camping for people starting out. Mosquitos are impartial to any time of day or weather and can be relentless at night. I totally understand why you presented the option as its very cost efficient. I would say invest in a tent or a hammock. At the least i would recommend a bug net for under 5 dollars though that would likely be uncomfortable to sleep in.
Great video series! The dog sleeping bag with Denali inside had me laughing. I can only imagine my dog. I don't think she would be as calm Denali. Wish you many more trips together.
Great vid ! It's good to see you were in one of my favorite Pa. hunting and camping areas. Went on my first Spring Gobbler hunt in 1974, very near the Hemlocks. Took several gobblers in the area. Slept in my rig right were you were parked. Also, many years of deer hunting off of Upper Buck Ridge, near the pipe lines. Last time I was up there, Big Springs State Park (below the Hemlocks ) was closed to camping. Another location that is good for hiking and camping near-by is Fowler's Hollow State Park. There are a couple of old,log half shelters in the area for hikers. One closer to the parking area at the Park and one a couple of miles deeper down the main trail all the way back to what we called the "Bowl"; which is near I believe is Twig Trail, which connects with Hemlock Road. I slept in that shelter a couple of times. Very nice back there.
Quite a different video from you Sintax. It is real neat to see you out of your comfort zone. There is a lot to learn for both novice and experienced backpackers in this video. You have come a long way in your backpacking hobby, and to see you go back to basics "sort of" as a newbie is really cool. Keep on doing what you do.
Appreciate that you demonstrated the gear, like the water purifier & didn't give just the usual "this worked great" like some others. Denali did well. Your Kelty tent listed is not in stock. May I suggest instead the Ozark Trails 4 season 2-person at around $45 retail. I found it a surprisingly good tent, like it almost as well as my others costing more than twice as much.
Great simple outing, Sean! I love the quick overnighters with light weight gear...simplicity makes it so much fun. I've camped on a slope as well but with my feet pointed down the incline; less chance of a roll over. I have a pack set to go but it weighs 33# so I may just ditch half the gear and go minimalist instead. Nice to see Denali again, too!
Another great info video, my wife and I are looking into Keto so hearing more from you will be good. Love my It's Cheeseburger Time shirt , I get lots of compliments on it . Thanks from Tim
The Steripen depends on the bioburden in the water. When you use it to drink from a creek where cattle runoff is upstream of you, you risk parasitic infections such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Stick with a filter or filter after the Steripen for double safety
Very Good Sintax! You always deliver great videos for us to watch. The next solo stealth camp video sounds like another great idea! Someone on a forum gave me crap about calling it stealth camping. He shouted back to me that it's called dispersed camping. lol He may be correct, but I still call it stealth camping! 😂 I still hope someday you will make it up north to my area. "U.P. of Michigan" 👍😀
At 37:35 you mentioned that if you tip over your alcohol stove, you better be prepared to use your cooking water to put it out immediately.. please don't ever actually do that. throwing water onto any kind of flaming liquid will not put it out, but make the fire much worse instead. If a spill catches on fire, cover it up with something solid to take the oxygen away from the flames to put the fire out safely.
I always love watching your videos but this one was extra special . This area your in is the place where I do my hunting . As a matter of fact I have my camp not too far from where you were . Very cool to see !!!! Thanks
Instead of having a lamp to guide you back to camp, just throw a reflex around a tree trunk/branch. The higher the better. Either the ones that dangle on a rope at your side or the ones that collapse around your leg. Uses no power and you can just shine some faint light in the general direction for a "light house" to guide you back to camp. It works really well, especially in the pitch dark when you're waking up in the middle of the night for a pee run.
A little south of me . i did first section of a t with gear under 300 . Delaware water gap to wind gap . Awesome video . gonna watch black forest next ...😉
I'm not into sporks either. I just use the BPA free plastic Walmart camping knife, spoon and fork set. They won't break the bank at 88 cents per set and they're both light and durable.
Now you're in my neck of the woods, Sintax. I live in Michaux State Forest, but within spitting distance of both Tuscarora and Buchanan SPs. Ive been to the Hemlocks several times - it's always a disappointment, as so many of the hemlocks are dead or dying. But the idea of it is cool.
Excited for the stealth camp! Cashier at Burger King was "grilling" me about my cheeseburger time shirt recently, good stuff, nice chance to spread the word!
Syntax, great video, highly enjoyed it! The Animato Lightweight Waterproof Mummy Sleeping Bag at Amazon is "currently unavailable." Can you recommend another with all the similar features?? Thank you!
Hi, Shawn 👍🏻👍🏻 I enjoyed watching your hiking and stealth camping with Denali, I know you get asked this a lot but I like that cap you are mostly always wearing looks cool. I was a DOD civilian I even deployed to Iraq in 2010 for a year l, 34 yrs service inspecting military uniforms at Ft. Gillem before the Brac closure order closed the base. Thanks for sharing, enjoy and have a Great week !!! Danny
Yes, he is. His whole litter and his mom were found locked in an abandoned house when he was 4 weeks old. We adopted him at 8 weeks old and his appreciation of humans is off the charts, haha
Hey..whatever happened with the Draumr? Your Boss really seemed to like that thing a lot. How did it stack up agains your more traditional hangs? I must have missed "That Draumr Show".
Great video sintax like always! I’m always looking for more tips and tricks for the trail. Maybe we can hit the trail together one day, we need more hiking content creators in the tri-state! -Eric Ventures
I am a long-time Steripen user, great to see it in your gear list at last! I do like the BeFree as well, but the bottles have a horrific plasticky taste that makes it unusable for me. I do usually use a pre-filter of some sort with the steripen, but it depends on the water source.
Have you looked into the Grayl? Removes bacteria, viruses and protozoa, and filters sediment plus many chemicals and heavy metals. No batteries to worry about and can filter 24 ounces in about 8 seconds.
What is Denali bred like? He has the structure of a true APBT. Not a chunky waddling bully. Nor does he have the square back you see in AKC Am Staffs/UKC APBT. Denali has that cat like stride which the roach back is something you see in true athletic APBT’s. None the less he’s a cool dog and has great structure from I can see.
Excellent video. A little weird seeing you on the ground. Old school pot and stove a little retro Sintax. I think it shows that you can make it happen with pretty much any budget. BTW, nice camera work as well. Hitting those different angles on the hill....nice.
Thanks, Dwayne. I definitely felt like I was missing something after simply throwing the tarp up, haha. It was fun and different, but I can't wait to get the hammock back out there for the next trip :D
how do you print out your maps? The only thing I could think of was google maps screenshot. Also, if you're using a tarp what if you got strong winds on the open sides with rain, would you not get very wet?
Good question and something I forgot to address in the video. My tarp, like most tarps, didn't have tie-out points directly on the center line. I bought some grommets at the fabric store and punched in my own centered at each end. I tied my two separate lines directly to each one and it worked well. A single free floating line with the tarp pulled down over top certainly would have worked as well. I did like the extra stability of having them tied right to the tarp though.
Great vid! I'm interested in doing a first overnight trip not too far from me and Tuscarora SF is only two hours away. Do you happen to have the GPS coordinates for where you made camp for the night? Thanks!
Dog pack manufacturers should take some design ideas from equines. Horses and mules have breast collars and britching or cruppers (though I cannot see a crupper working well on a dog). It keeps the load from shifting forward or backwards on slopes.
Heading out Saturday for a 9 day, 160 mile thru hike of the the River to River Trail in Southern Illinois. I've been doing keto also, but decided to go off for this trip. It just seems like it would be too hard to do for that long. I'll be rocking my cheeseburger time shirt!
Nali has a monthly oral treatment. For myself, I actually experimented with Picardin lotion for the first time. Goes on like sunscreen. I never found anything on me, despite seeing a tick ground at one point, so I know they were out there. Considering I slept right on the ground with an open sleeping bag, I was pretty happy with that.
Thank you for this information. It may be nice to hear at the being and end of your trips what you are using for bug protection for you and Denali. That would be very help information. I have used Picardin spray with great results. For Denali did you find any ticks on him. I would like to take my dog (Neptune) on more hikes.

Awesome idea to actually use the gear from the video about budget backpacking. Looking forward to more of that stuff. BTW what model is the watch you are wearing? Cheers Tom
If you really want to keep it simple while you’re stealth camping, I challenge you to use some knots instead of gadgets. Very light weight, you won’t lose them in the leaves when you drop them and it won’t cost you a dime. i.e. taught line hitch, prusik knot, marlin spike hitch, half hitch, bowline etc... #KnowledgeIsPower
Very nice video man! Im a tent guy, for sure...but while thru-hiking last year, I got real curious about a simple A-Frame tarp...after watching this, Im def gonna tarp it up when this weather turns into hiking season! Love Mountain Houses, but the breakfast ones take a special kind of "non-pickiness" to enjoy, lol. Btw, you ever consider doing cowboy coffee??...I HIGHLY recommened it my guy!
I've been meaning to take some grounds out and try cowboy coffee, but haven't done so yet. I'll have to give it a shot. Speaking of Mountain House, I tried their Spicy Breakfast Hash for the first time in my most recent trip vid and it was pretty amazing, haha. None of the dehydrated egg cubes, which I find kind of hit or miss in their other dishes.
Tested out keto savages fathead pizza crust recipe as “bread” for a tuna sandwich. Works, it was good! I’m interested in your keto video. Looking forward to it!👍
Budget Backpacking Drinking Game - Take a drink whenever I refer to Denali as "Buddy" 🐶🍺
Playing with a Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA. CHEERS!!
Excellent!

I've found that if you roll up those pads in the opposite (against the curl) direction you can get them to relax a little bit and not want to curl up so much the next time you unroll them. Great vid.
I love that you are into your dog hiking with you. People don't realize how much fun a dog is on trips.
Your dog is so chill. What a good boy!
love how the dog was just flopped out on the sleeping pad as you broke down camp. 10/10 good boi
Love the video. Simple, fun, basic. Thanks for taking us along.
There's a very old expression about lightweight backpacking: The more you know, the less you carry.
I really enjoyed this video, great demonstration!
I had to mention this with the number of times you talked about the curling up of the sleep pads. love how denali jumps up from laying down, waiting for his master to FINALLY stop yapping so he can go enjoy the woods 3:15
🐕 was too happy to hit the trail.
Happy dog.
I've been a fan of yours forever but now I see you drive a Jeep and you've gone Keto, you have just made king of my list, LOL! AWESOME Video!

Always glad to see Sintax videos. Its interesting to see how the gear nuts do backpacking on a budget. Looking forward to more awesome videos.
Good time, inexpensive- enjoy the outdoors for not much money. Nice, practical video.
Loving these videos! And I love a good budget lol
Excellent video on your overnighter with your cheap gear review thank you for showing have a good day can't wait to see the next
I love the hour long videos.
Appreciate that you demonstrated the gear, like the water purifier & didn't give just the usual "this worked great" like some others. Denali did well.

Do you ever get kind of freaked out when doggie does the menacing growl routine after sundown?
Right, how could u not.
Overnight is ok for most. I'm a 4-7 day or 2-8 week's on an outing so I carry more just because have been for 40+ years now. I like to be comfortable.
I always love watching your videos but this one was extra special . This area your in is the place where I do my hunting . As a matter of fact I have my camp not too far from where you were . Very cool to see !!!! Thanks

Great video. I've been waiting for another hiking/ camping video. By the way, I'd be soooooo drunk if I took a shot everytime you said buddy.lol!
Yeah, definitely don't attempt with hard spirits, haha
Great to see another video pop up on my alerts on my phone ....hope Carl likes this video ... not like but loves
I'm not into sporks either. I just use the BPA free plastic Walmart camping knife, spoon and fork set. They won't break the bank at 88 cents per set and they're both light and durable.
I know you said in the last video that your base weight was 13 lbs., but how much is it now with food & other consumables?
Now you're in my neck of the woods, Sintax. I live in Michaux State Forest, but within spitting distance of both Tuscarora and Buchanan SPs. Ive been to the Hemlocks several times - it's always a disappointment, as so many of the hemlocks are dead or dying. But the idea of it is cool.
Wordsmyth8 same area as you
Nice trip man, nothing like a simple overnighter. Think I'm gonna have too get out next weekend myself.
Excited for the stealth camp! Cashier at Burger King was "grilling" me about my cheeseburger time shirt recently, good stuff, nice chance to spread the word!
Me too! Haha, good one :D
Great video as always, thank you for sharing.
Syntax, great video, highly enjoyed it! The Animato Lightweight Waterproof Mummy Sleeping Bag at Amazon is "currently unavailable." Can you recommend another with all the similar features?? Thank you!
Im impressed Nali follows the trail with no leash.

Love all your videos. Great idea at 28.57!
So cute puppers carry his own stuff. Wish my baby wasn’t scared of everything and would do this
Great video as always. Love your stuff bro but got a ?. For anyone who knows... What's up with your hat? Why the cutouts on the side? Just wondering
You're literally living my dream. Backpacking and a Pit Bull.
Commented that before watching. Edit: IM IN LOVE WITH YOUR DOG. Is he a rescue?
Yes, he is. His whole litter and his mom were found locked in an abandoned house when he was 4 weeks old. We adopted him at 8 weeks old and his appreciation of humans is off the charts, haha
sintax77 that’s so sad😞 People are awful man. I’m glad he’s in great hands. Love your videos!

Really great job. Will likely help more folks get out without break their back or budget.
When you tie the tarp out at the center between two trees are you just securing with grommets or do you run a center line all the Way across
Thanks!

I definitely do that myself on occasion. It's also a great opportunity to get a legit post-hike cheeseburger before going back to keto. Enjoy it!
Hi there. I was where you got your trail map from? I wasn't able to locate one on the dcnr page. Thanks! #302 😊
Thanks I Ben Waring for a New backpacking video from you thanks
Good video and good explaining....your dog is awesome......T.Gunz
What do you do for tick prevention? Just curious I'm in the woods alot my self. Thanks Greg
Good dog! Stayed with you.
Check out Thrive Life freeze dried foods for camping and backpacking. You can make up your own meals with zero carbs or sodium. It makes eating keto a lot easier when camping and backpacking.
I finally realized which celebrity you remind me of...Wil Wheaton
DR Piper from Magnum pi? Definitely!
Except, much more bearable of a person than Wil Wheaton. (And more natural on the camera)
I dig your videos sir keep up the good stuff have blessed day.
I'm a keto gal so am always on the lookout for keto/low carb food ideas especially as I'm a camping/hiking newbie please do more on this in the future and I appreciate these budget ideas but tarp only sleeping eekk not that brave yet :-)
Nice video. Simple and prof flow cost doesn’t mean cheap.
Doing this in my nearby backyard, kind of.
You lucked out. Got two spring days in a row when it wasn’t raining or near 99 degrees.
Speaking of hot days at Tuscarora, I saw a pic of a on a PA DNR FB page of a group of bears at Tuscarora taking. A dip in stream to cool off. I saw the bear bag, so I have to ask. Ever worry about your side kick in bear country. Although I’m sure his early warning system is top notch. But I’m sure he’d stand hi ground.
Keep up the good work.
Check out North Fork Mountain Trail in WV. I think its worth considering for a future video. Magnificent views!
Awesome, thanks for the heads up!
Great channel. I was curious what seat cover you had in the Jeep for Denali?
It's an Urpower Dog Hammock amzn.to/2HbTOP3 We like it not just for the dog, but for keeping cargo, groceries, etc secure on the back seat. Plus it also keeps items on the back floor out of sight, especially when the top's down.
question, why do you need a tarp above you when you sleep? I can understand it during day time for shade, but why need it at night to block the stars?
in case it rains? shelter from wind
I didn't see it, but maybe some has asked. Can you tell me about Denali's pack and leash combo.
I put a doggie gear list in the video description :)
I can't do the tarp! I gotta bring my one man tent. Just talked about that in my latest video! Great video man!
19:15 You need a permit to carry those guns?...lol Looking good man, that keto diet must be working. Another great video.
Try a tea infuser, aka tea ball, couple of bucks. Put in ground coffee, pour boiling water, two minutes later you've got a cup of the real thing.
I've actually got a few of those at home already. Never thought of packing it in for coffee though. Great idea - thanks for the heads up!
Where does the dog sleep when ur in a hammock. Underneath on his pad?
finally! been waiting for this, and I am doing the drinking game as well
Awesome idea to actually use the gear from the video about budget backpacking. Looking forward to more of that stuff.
BTW what model is the watch you are wearing?
Cheers Tom
Dude on your first break you neglected the dogs. His pack or should I say his back needed a break also.
Yeah, good rule of thumb is every time you take off your pack take off your dogs too.
sweet vid mate, what dog pack and lead are you using
I put names and links for those and some of Denali's other gear in the vid description. The leash is by OutdoorMaster and his pack is by One Tigris.
How did you not roll down the hill in your sleep??
Woop Woop that's my neck of the woods.
What kind of watch do you have there?
Nice video and lots of good tips for those on a budget. Why did you set camp on a hillside instead of flat ground?
That was about the best choice we had, believe it or not. It worked out reasonably well though.
Enjoying my Cheeseburger t-shirt. Plans for another batch?
Glad to hear that :) It went pretty well, so perhaps down the road, yes!
Great video! Love the Jeep, how long have you had it? I got mine back in 2014, was the perfect compliment to my lifestyle.
Just got mine (2017 JKUR) 4 months ago. :D

Is this budget hiking or diet video?
Tested out keto savages fathead pizza crust recipe as “bread” for a tuna sandwich. Works, it was good! I’m interested in your keto video. Looking forward to it!👍
Nice, I'll have to look that up!
awesome dog
nicely done
Good idea for a video but when you use the beFree/Sawyer's you should wipe off the bag so you don't contaminate the clean water.
new subscriber here! your videos are so so helpful! thank you so much

I don't know how you managed a decent night's sleep on that hill. I have to be level...
