Sara's Shocking Budget Backpacking Gear Challenge

- Sara goes Backpacking to try out some $30 Amazon Camping Gear.
For this early spring backpacking trip, Sara and I headed to an upper elevation section of Arizona’s Coconino National Forest, about 30 miles southwest of Sedona. Despite it’s close proximity to the much hotter and drier desert like climate of Sedona, the 7,500 foot elevation and abundant snow melt provided an environment surprisingly similar to hiking back on our native east coast. Yes, you can actually find snow, pine trees and abundant streams in Arizona!
To get our dose of 20 degree cooler temps, along with some pockets of remaining snow, we chose to hike a section of the larger Cabin Loop Trail system. This loop utilizes several different local trails. One of which is the Arizona Trail, a roughly 800 mile long distance trail that traverses the entire length of the state from the Mexican border to the Utah state line.
This particular region of the AZT gave us some awesome camping opportunities right along the Mogollon Rim with stunning views down into the valley some 2,000 feet below. To be fair though, we didn’t really spend too much time on the actual AZT. We chose instead to create our own route along the rim, in search of drinking water and those aforementioned great views.
For gear on this trip, Sara decided to pick up several new pieces budget backpacking to test out - a sleeping pad, two person tent, and two person sleeping bag complete with pillows. She found each of these for about $30 a piece on Amazon. But would they get the job done for an overnight backpacking trip with our dog in tow? Well, there’s only one way to find that out, I guess.
Oh, and the last mile or so of road to the trailhead was impassable due to a blockade of remaining snow, so that made for an interesting start 🙂

No freaking way, you're parked right behind my jeep! Just hardly missed you I guess, my buddy and did the cabin loop. Planned to drop a car at the end but parked before the drift up ahead. I pulled the Chevy out of the hole before we left. Dang, can't believe we were so close to crossing paths! Thanks for sharing as always and take care!
Wait, for real?! That's amazing, haha. Happy to hear you got to knock out the loop. It didn't quite fit into our time frame, but it sounds like it's pretty awesome hike from what I've read.
2 nights for the loop would have been better than the one. I think my buddy and I hiked out shortly after the truck at the end got unstuck. When you came across the encampment with everyone parked in the road I realized I was right there for sure lol

Yay! Always love seeing your wife on your trips.
Love when you go with Sarah. You both have so much fun together and I chuckle a lot too. This was fun.
So glad to see Sarah and Denali! They brighten up your trips! And actual pine trees! What a treat-no cacti! Great trip you two, thank you so much!😊
Nice to see you take on the embodiment of "Trail Slippa" on this one😂
Funny, I was camped up there the same weekend you were there. I saw you jeep and the skidoo but didn't realize it was yours. You had a sick campsite, glad you're giving AZ some love!
Good to see Sarah and Denali seems like it has been a while. Happy camping!
Denali is so cute. He is looking at the tent wondering how all 3 of you are going to fit❤❤❤❤
We were too 😅
Dang I'm always out there in the coconino wilderness. Its a great way to escape the Phoenix heat! Glad to see the whole gang enjoying my neck of the woods! Hi to Sarah and Denali!
Great video and you and Sara were on point. You are blessed with a great soulmate.
Now I'm hungry for spicy Ramen noodles!!!!! I might have some knorrs's packets. Pantry raid at 3 am!
You my friend need to take your wife out on adventures way more often, you two crack me up.
Great spot! Especially during those late afternoon hours, it was so beautiful up there.
It's good to see Sara out on another adventure with you. I like camping up in the elevations like this. It does get interesting when a severe thunderstorm comes thru. At least you had decent weather for your trip.
Enjoyed the hike and it was good to see Sara again.
I ordered some merch today 😁 so happy to see your wife and dog. I’ve been enjoying your videos for a long time, thank you for hours of hard work 🎉
Thanks, Laura! Happy to hear you've been enjoying the vids!
Oh my gosh !! New video !! I'm watching now. Love, love your adventures but my favorite are with Sara and Denali. She's hilarious and Denali is the cutest ❤
Yeah ... Sara is the lifeblood of your camps .. love her sense of humor and way of putting meanings to situations. Really great scenic rim to test out a budget set of gear.. Bushyboy Oz.
Sara!!! 😊
amazing campspot! I have to say we used Ozark Trail tents for years camping with the kids and scouts- sprayed to waterproof every season and they never let us down!! Great to see Sara and Denali!
That tent reminded me of the cheap tents people use once at a festival then toss it.
I really enjoyed this hike. I was good to see Sara and Denali along with you. Glad the Packet Gourmet was still good. That was a great fire, and fire pit too. I can't help but wonder about the grave; I suspect it was a dog maybe? Anyway, keep hiking. I am always happy to see a new vid from you!
""In Mongolia, when a dog dies, he is buried high in the hills so people cannot walk on his grave. The dog's master whispers into the dog's ear his wishes that the dog will return as a man in his next life." - The Art of Racing in the Rain"
Mike is going to think you are trying to steal his Trailslippa name. 😂 Glad to see Sara and Denali!
Thanks for showing us this beautiful spot in Arizona! I'm starting my bucket list now... Best wishes, and thanks for what you do!
Great video! Budget backpacking is the best!!! It let's everyone know that anyone can into backpacking - you don't need all the fancy name brand stuff but it's always good to support local indie brands if you can. I always enjoy your videos!
Hi Shawn and Sara 👋🏻 Always great to hear from you my friends 👊🏻👍🏻 Hope you're doing well, stay safe and take care 🙏🏻 Appreciate you!
Thanks, DB. We're doing well! You stay safe out there too :)
@@sintax77 Will do my friends 😊👍🏻 Thank you 🙏🏻🫶🏻
Years ago I bought an Ozark Trails tent for $25 and I still have it. I've probably camped in it 70 to 100 times. I stayed in it in Telluride CO for a month during Monsoon season. No problems... It's just now having zipper problems.
it’s the bestest boi Nali!!!! always good to see him and Sara out for a journey as well 🎉🥳
Careful with the fires up on the Mongollon rim... Wind comes up VERY fast there. That fire can travel 10 miles in hours in that area. very very dry
Hey, Nice to see your wife Sara with ya and Denali ,he is so cute , Beautiful area but wow that snow at the start. contact the company of the tent they should replace the poles , wonder if it will leak in the rain. What a great trip love this .
Thanks for bringing us along!
Wow. It's been a minute. Good to see you guys. Love the rad, 80's, high 5, 80's montage!
Very nice - and such a sweet dog.
Fantastic, overnight or trip, good to see you guys. Glad you had great weather and beautiful season. 😎
Thoroughly enjoyed your as always, great fun, great views. Look forward to your next adventure 👍
You 3 are awesome. Loving the more frequent uploads. Hope you all have a great summer.
Sara is a trooper.
Great day when we get a new Sinxtax77 vid and with the wife bonus!! Thanks for the vids and keep up the great work.
Fun adventure. Love seeing Sarah again
Glad to see you and Sarah out and about
Great video as always Shawn! So fun when ya'll hike together.🙂
Should have taken the AZT north from Fr 300 past the first cabin, General Springs Cabin out to Pinchot cabin. That small Chevron shaped marker on the tree was the General Crook trail
Nah... Plenty of good camping off Fred Haught not even 2.5 miles north of GSC. He had a pretty sick spot on the rim there. Much prettier than Pinchot which is boring. Not to mention, If he had gone to Pinchot, the hike down into the area where 95 is washed out would have been a swamp. I think the ECL gets the most love of the Cabin Loop 'system' but I personally have always liked Fred Haught before it splits from the AZT to blue ridge.
Did Y'all make it to That Brewery in Pine for your Cheeseburger fix ?
Always great to see you and Sara with your puppy! (What happened to you writing and checking your packing list?) Great looking campfire!
Sara so cool!!
❤It's really cool.Nice.
That is a great place to camp beautiful scenery, nice fire, too!
I did the entire cabin loop starting down at Washington park last year. Fantastic experience.
Phone, wallet, keys. Love it. That's my line! 😂
Another GREAT Video! Thank you! Always like to see Sarah and Denali! Tried to send you a picture of the northern Presidentials in January.. It got bounced back. Is there any way to get you this SUPER POSTER?
Finally another one with you and Sarah love it when you two are together in camping videos . How come you two don't seem to do a lot of hiking and camping trips anymore together?
10:31 Finding water is 1000 points in metric. Cheers! 🍻
Hey Shawn and Sara are you going to do the spring mountains red rock area of Nevada you seem to be doing a southwest tour. Its a unique and phenomenal area
We're a bit farther north now, but actually mentioned before we left that she was bummed we didn't hit Nevada during our travels. We'll be back though! Thanks for the region suggestion. I starred it on my google maps for future reference. :)
Thanks for the video
Sara is back!! 🫶🏻🧡🫶🏻🧡
Wonderful
Wild born Drosophilas drosophila?! Mmmmmm delicious.
Sarah you rock girl👍🤟
Finally! Sarah in the house!
The Internet knows that Step 2 comes after setting up the tent.
Shawns shoes remind me of the Linville Gorge video!
😂 You get today's OG Viewer award for that
Trail slipper!
I knew he did this before. Now it's a fear of mine. My trail runners mostly live in the trunk of my car, unless they need to be cleaned and I take them out. I put my shoes in the car first on a trip, because I wouldn't hike in vans. I'm not as bad ass as Shawn though. I would be searching for a shoe store or driving back home.
I wish my wife would come with me camping! .
Totally cool beans!
Vans sponsor wouldnt be too far off with their new trail lineup.
packit gourmet is that jam. best back pack food by far.
I love seeing Denali off leash!!!
There are actually some wildfires burning in various places in AZ right now.
Any star glazing? Looks like a great place for watching meteors!
Good video, always better when your wife is in the video to admire as I enjoy the video.
I hope you will do ebike camping. I love my ebikes, used to have a guide service, and ebikes and e-hiking carts are the future...
And I'm happy to have motor help to enjoy the earth and woods.
At least get ebikes, you'll love them. Get a child carrier bike trailer and strap your dog in by the collar so he won't jump out... And make videos...
Let us learn from your ebike mistakes.
And more her, always....

Next time in payson Mackies for your cheeseburger!
Somebody make me a CHEESEBURGER!!!!
My ex wife had a cousin (Stephen Zabek) that went camping up there and the wind knocked him off the boulder he was standing on and he fell to his death.
That was back in 2003.
There’s a feeling of carelessness about most of your choices. Be it gear, site or food. I know that you like facing risk, it’s your thing but…😮
this just made me check my packit gourmet dates. 2 no good. will be usung the rest in 2 weeks
What’s the chance of a new cheeseburger time picture with name of restaurant and rating at end of video. With all the hikes you must be getting into some remarkable food options as well as hikes
Entering on the narrow end of the tent means you’re not crawling over someone to get in and out.
Nice spot !
Doggo has the advantage with 4 paw drive.
If that's a four person tent it must one at a time.
35 bucks for a tent, not bad
Ok just checked on the tent and it said it was 7.7 pounds not bad for a cheap tent
Or is that the 2 person only 2.5 pounds and that one is only $35
Trail Slippa part deux?
I have never understood why people use up stove fuel when they already have a fire going.
❤
I was just on the Western portion of the Cabin Loop Trail this past weekend. The Rim Road is a great place for camping. You just missed the turn-off for the Trail. Instead of going South down the AZT, you needed to go in the opposite direction North up that rough road to the General Springs Cabin where the trail begins. There was still a lot of water out there this weekend.
Always glad to see you out in these parts. The first video I saw of yours was in the Superstitions!
Awesome to see you and Sarah and Denali I was on the trail with another video
That $35 tent was quite small but it barely barely worked for you too
The snuggling continues with that big two-person quilt
Sarah you did a fantastic job I'm carrying that and a few other odds and ends that you had
Beautiful waterfall for that water source that you got
You three take care see you on the next video in about 5 months let's hope not let's hope it's a lot closer to a couple of weeks
It's good to see your lovely wife sara
The mogollon rim rules, doing an overnighter up there this weekend 😎
Trail Slippa has nothing on you!
Hope all is been well with you and the family, haven't seen a video in a while. I was wondering if everything was
I'm gonna sit back and watch 😎
so 'feature' is a geological and a geographic term
The cabin look was brutal btw, we did 30 miles in 2 days. Big snow drifts and we had to build bridges several times to cross the swollen creeks.
Oh, man - I was wondering what kind of snow it might get into that time of year. And it two days, as well. Sounds like an epic trip though!
I grew up and went to school with the owner of vans there HQ is in Costa Mesa you weren't cool if you didn't have vans
EXPIRATION DATES FOR THESE DRIED FOODS ARE MORE ABOUT NUTRITION AND APPEARANCE...NOT WHETHER IT IS SAFE TO EAT.
What backpack is your wife carrying?
Hi sara
Sure you weren't tipsy at the end? Haha
😂😂😂
That's a 2 person tent
what is ur dads chanel again cant remember been off line for awhile
Im subscribed to him
WhiteRook85
@@sintax77 Thanks man i really enjoy his vids to
Well, anyway••••🌾
Bro gray beard Sintax say it aint so
It's humiliating to me a tad, Im over here explicating the minutia of my kit, studying characteristics of different tent fabrics and this dude totes a glorified trash bag tent up a mountain and changes routes on the fly. The kind of cajones that can only come from years of hiking. Discomfiting
