I have been obsessed with your videos for a couple years now. Starting watching them while recovering from a major surgery that took me out of hiking and they gym for quite a while. I’m happy to say you have motivated me to get back out there! My children and I are starting with a week long camping trip to a local state park, with lots of trails to explore. It’s not huge, but it’s a great way to get back out there. Thank you!
My family was at that campground 49 yrs ago. I was playing in the river, having a grand old time, until my father made me get out. He said I was turning blue from the cold water.
That wasn't a very good video... it was a great video! I really loved the trail and camp footage and the editing was outstanding! You kept me engaged every minute. Thanks!
Wow, that bear encounter was no joke! Great job catching him on film and keeping your cool. Bad job using trail mix as a pillow. Ha ha, glad you were ok. Thanks for another great adventure.
I was camping at Copper Harbor in the UP (Michigan’s Upper Peninsula) over the 4th of July and woke up at 2am the same way. It was windy up there, being right on Lake Superior, and apparently my whopper hooks frayed my amsteel lines to the breaking point. No real harm,no fault of Dutch. I lol’d after a 20-30 second processing time. The joys of hammocking.
David Ashley it was the one in NH when everything went wrong and Mike had a water bottle leak all over the tent-they went toDelaneys Hole In The Wall in North Conway-probably the best Irish food and great burgers in NH.Wish he would show the burger chowdown too.
Love your vids... just the right mix of technical data, artsy shots, and your reassuring way of narration. I don’t know how u find the time to do these but I hope u continue. And more Sara, she’s awesome!
2016 much of that area burnt. The town of Gatlinburg burnt killing many. A few boys apparently started. Bad drought that year. No fires were allowed any place. Glad you got to come south again. Need to go back to the Smokies or try Cumberland Island. We enjoy your vids. Thanks for all of the work you put into them.
Nice to see you in my area again, have camped at Betty Creak before and done that loop but little longer version the clockwise way. Pretty area :) Love your videos and thanks for getting me to order from Packit Gourmet that is some good grub.
I get that you did this hike a really long time ago but I super appreciate that you didn't just edit out the hammock issue. We can learn from that. Also being willing to share that makes me feel like we can trust you to give us the most accurate information.
Just found this guy....and wouldn’t ya know he’s in my camping area in this one. Got kinda excited to see it through somebody else. The videos are fantastic and the shots of scenery is great....greatly appreciated. I’m not sure if he’s using a hand held or GoPro on the chest.......but maybe a chest mounted something instead of us watching his trail and feet. And believe me, he’s gotta watch every single step in the areas he camps. But sometimes those parts of the video make my ol’ ass dizzy watching it. Ha! Or one of those head mounted ones. It really would be great to be looking at it right through his viewpoint. 👍. There’s no telling what could run across a trail where he’s hiking. Stay safe and the videos are great. Satisfied subscriber.
Great trip, thanks for sharing. I love the fact that you aren’t afraid to show your mistakes on trail, none of us are perfect and we all learn from our mistakes and the mistakes of others. I really appreciate that honesty in your channel.
I have been enjoying these long videos today while working from home, especially the NC ones. I live in Charlotte and we're on lockdown right now. Thanks for sharing!
Looks like you hiked it in the opposite direction that I took a year-and-a-half ago. Also it was dry for you and there weren't Rivers coming down all those Hills you went up. But it's a beautiful walk. I'm glad you made this video it brought back memories. When I was there it was about 6 months after the fire so about one-fifth of the trail was desolate and apocalyptic. Glad to see it's recovered. That was my first experience on the A.T. and I had over packed by about a ton. After hiking this loop I started to dig into TH-cam to find out how to lighten my load. I'll be hitting the Foothills Trail soon and you are a big part of why thank you.
The All American burger from Packet Gourmet is awesome. I recently had it on a backpacking trip I went on and it is very tasty! I like the new packaging they have. Awesome video you put together!
Sintax this was an outstanding video and brought back many memories. I have hiked this section at least 5 times with the highlight being with my grandson. The memories are priceless. Take Care and God Bless
Nice vid! Great seeing a full-length solo video again! These are my favorite format of yours. Regarding 27:00, I do the same thing. Found that just using a Dutch Hook on the end of Zing-It and using a stick really works well. Then I just use the normal PCT style hang for my bag.
Yes those fires were back in 2016, where you were at was caused by a hiker not putting out their fire, And the one in Gatlinburg was cause by 2 teenagers playing with matches. Myself and a group were suppose to section hike in that area and had to change plans and go up further to Watauga Lake. Glad to see that the area is rejuvenating itself. Great hike Sintax.
That's a great loop! My buddies & I did it in the other direction last summer during the eclipse. We had a perfect viewing from the top of Standing Indian. The clouds cleared up just in time for the eclipse. It was a great experience!
As you probably noticed, that section of AT was burned by wildfire in Oct. and Nov. of 2016. The "creepy" trees used to be "the green tunnel" of rhododendron and mountain laurel for which the AT is famous/infamous. That area gets 70-80 inches of rain a year, which why it was chosen by the Forest Service for a hydrological outdoor laboratory. It is also a bear preserve where they dump off problem bears from other areas.
I don't normally like long video's but, watching your video allowed me to see your successes and failures and learn from both. No longer head knowledge but, experiential knowledge as the viewer feels like we are with you. Excellent way to do a video. The auto focus was a little crazy.
Some hikers and I stayed at Betty Creek where you ate back in March and it was one of the BEST campsites! If you saw a downed skinny tree, on the other side of the creek, I did that.
Love the AT trips. About to head off on my first ultralight trip myself in 2 days, though not anywhere as nice as the AT! This video will do nicely to get me hyped up for it :)
ahhh, you were in my country...and even pronounced Natahala as the Cherokee do. You know the non-native locals and most hikers say a long A after the H, but I was pleasantly surprised when you said Appalachians as the locals do! I think the NOC has promoted the use of just the initials NOC now. You were so fortunate with the weather and the bonus fog! I really don't think you gave yourself credit for the altitude and humidity when mentioned your challenge on the trail to the first camp site. I know you hike that altitude and higher in the Whites, but even a few weeks at lower altitude, loses the red blood cell concentration and acclimation to the elevation! I found out the hard way in Wyoming. You "suffered" your hammock drop with such grace and humility! So glad you made it to the tower and showed us our beautiful Smokies in their typical summer haze. I was still there when the fires in November 2016 scorched hundred of thousands of acres all over Western NC. Even had some flames a few miles from the ridge next to mine. Rain came just in time for my area. So glad to see the regrowth. Good work on the vid and you need a trophy for the 12 hour drive on 3 hours sleep!
Great to see you down in the South again, Sintax. I can't wait to watch the entire video. The locals pronounce it Nanta-hay-la. Say it with a southern drawl and it just rolls off the tongue.
Hello my outdoors friend. I am thoroughly enjoying this entertaining and informative video. You take care out there, be safe and have fun. See you on the next one. 🤗
Thanks for the vid! Found it while researching for info on this loop for a November 2019 hike. My hiking buds have done tons of hikes in this area. We are planning to hike clockwise but love to see some of the campsite options your vid shows. Highly recommend trying the Slickrock creek trails. You would love it! About to check out your Linville Gorge hike. Revisiting that area after many years from hiking it in the 70’s and 80’s. FYI. You mentioned fires in the past there. Unfortunately too many that were NOT controlled burns. Some bad ones over the years but it’s growing back and has never lost its beauty. Happy trails and keep the vids coming.
@sintax77 Holy Smokes! Between 39:50 and 41:30!!! Straight up, just Beautiful! ...that views are incredible! Thanx for the Video! Merry Christmas, Cheers!
Thanks for another great video sintax. I especially liked this one as our Boy Scout troop is planning to do almost that same hike in June next year (we will be following the Kimsey Creek Trail instead of the Lower Ridge Trail to the AT). Keep the awesome videos coming!
@syntax77 I'd really love to see a video of you planning your trip in Basecamp or whatever you use and a little walk through of your process. Thanks for all the great videos.
Great trip! I'd love to see a video where you talk about the last three loadouts that you have used. The budget and stealth setup seemed like a lot of fun. I like to experiment with crazy gear like that too. The more mainstream backing packing gear is almost always a better choice, but not always as memorable. Keep up the great work!
I can't wait to see your winter snow filled videos this yr and the gear your gonna use this time. Now that I'm set up for freezing weather this yr I'm super excited to spend my first night in at hammock with sub zero temps to test out my new gear
Very good video. That last view was worth the whole trip. Did the same thing with my hammock a couple of years ago. Thanks for the video and take care, Al
Loved the video. I especially liked what you did with the fade-away of the tarp and hammock on day 3. Also some terrific drone shots - a whole different prospective of the views. Keep on truckin.....
Delaware Representing!!! Im from Wilmington :-) Thanks for a great video and the data you pack along with it on your website! Looking forward to my first backpacking trip. Trying to plan my first is proving to be difficult. I am seriously considering shadowing one of your hikes as they are so wonderfully detailed.
Hey sintax! Love your videos. They are inspiring. I’m brand new to backpacking. I’m in South Carolina and I love that you’ve done a ton of the trails in my backyard! Me and a few other “noobs” are doing the Art Loeb in November. You should come down and join us! Might make for an informative video to hike and give some schooling to some backpacking babies.
Your a friggen Packit Gourmet commercial! Oh, yea.....I never leave home without the Chili, burger works, grits or texmex taco!10 miles no sweat, Gourmet chili better yet!!
BREATHTAKING BEAUTY COLORS SCENERY VIEWS VIDEO ! LOVE THE BIRDS SINGING / TALKING ! THANK YOU ! BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ON YOUR JOURNEYS ! ENJOYED ! THE EARLY MORNING OVERLOOK WAS AN AMAZING VIEWS ! WOULD MAKE AN AWESOME PIC FOR IN YOUR HOUSE !
Great video Sintax! If I had known you were so close to my home (3.94 miles to be exact), I would have treated you to that cheeseburger in Franklin. Love your stuff and if you're ever back in our area, as there are plenty more trails to explore, let me know and I'll give you the nickel tour.
That piped spring reminded me of the ones in Shenandoah...great video dude..the camp shots and seeing all the gear is my favorite part..gear nerding it to the fullest i suppose..
That explanation of what "Nantahala" translates to in Cherokee was cool. Thanks. Isle Royale was referenced by the local Ojibwe tribe as "Minong" (MEE-nahng) ....meaning "the good place". Apparently they would paddle the giant canoes over there because the fishing was great, and the blueberries were epic. :) Take one guess who is the only guy in Michigan with a personalized license plate that says MINONG?
The guy he was talking about that started the fires on the chimneys in the smokies was never prosecuted. Which really ticks a lot of people off around here, since the smokies are my backyard. He ruined the chimneys for years and years. Now there's just a lookout, you can't go up there anymore. It's really sad.
I thought it was two teens who started the fire in the Smokies: www.knoxnews.com/story/news/nation-now/2017/06/30/gatlinburg-wildfire-arson-charges-dropped-against-teens/443129001/
At the beginning had you taken Kimsey Creek Trail instead of Lower Ridge Trail it would have made your hike right at 24 miles. Kimsey Creek Trail is a beautiful trail, i highly recommend it. I did this loop this past spring.
I was always told with black bears to hold your ground make a lot of noise but no one has ever said what to do in the middle of the night if one is creeping around your tent or hammock what would you do if a bear was creeping around your tent in the middle of the night thanks
Hell yea Sintax video! It's amazing how fast bears climb down trees. I experienced my first bear in a tree in the smoky's and it was crazy as well. Ever thought about trying the fancee feast version of your stove with carbon felt? I think it's more fuel efficient.
sintax77 basically you cut a cat food can in half. Put a tomato paste can inside raised about 1 inch over the lip. And wrap carbon felt around it you can find it on Amazon or home Depot / Lowe's. Punch some holes in the tomatoes past can at the bottom and a few at the top to let air flow in. It's worth definitely the 5 minutes to make it
I love ❤️ your videos. Make sure you’re inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth ( Think Lamaz) You’ll get much deeper breath that way that will fill your lungs and you won’t have to gasp for as much air. Colleen the RN 😊
A video or two ago I mentioned the Fire's Creek Rim Trail. It's actually pretty close to here and you can see Standing Indian from Tusquitee Bald. Pretty cool area
I just bought a canister stove but mostly use an alcohol stove. I mostly do day hikes with a few 1 nighters. I’m not sure why so many people use toxic fuel in them. I use 190 proof grain alcohol from the liquor store. It works great, you could use it as hand sanitizer (denatured alcohol is toxic even with skin contact), fire stater, or even drink it, and it costs almost the same..... I think the last 1 liter bottle I bought was about 20 bucks.
Very cool, I'll have to check that out. By medicinal benefits, are we talking like, cool patterns and micropsia or something more traditional like inflammation relief etc?
Good stuff as always Sintaxx!! I got charged by a mother black bear 3 nights ago while out picking raspberries here in Petoskey Michigan. I was in the woods at a nice patch, and noticed a cub (oh shit), then mom came out 35ish yards on the opposite side of me. I fired off my G19 3 times....and THEN she charged me....but stopped at about 15 yards. I slowly backed away, and from in between her and her baby. Wow. That has never happened to me. I backpack a lot, and never bring a gun...but I got almost wrecked in the woods right near my own hometown!! haha. Whatever. Its nature....so its all good. I bear no grudges to those bears. ;) I have told you before......go do a solo trip of Isle Royale, Michigan. You can make it 45 miles from one end to the other, or boss-up and do like 90 (end-to-end-and-back). I assure you that you would love it. Thanks for the vids!!!
That's some crazy stuff, man! Glad to hear it worked out okay. I've seen a mother with a cub(s) on a couple occasions, but thankfully it's always been parallel to me with the cub trailing. I can't imagine coming in between them or getting bluff charged :o
This is why you are everyone's favorite hiking partner. What a beautifully
documented trip. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us.
Joe Robinet
@@grantjames3117 Joe focuses more on the Bushcraft. I consider them both the best in their respective areas.
Your solo trips make the best videos, keep them coming.
I have been obsessed with your videos for a couple years now. Starting watching them while recovering from a major surgery that took me out of hiking and they gym for quite a while. My family was at that campground 49 yrs ago. I was playing in the river, having a grand old time, until my father made me get out. He said I was turning blue from the cold water.
I rarely watch anything for an hour, let alone on youtube, yet here I am watching every minute of this. Good stuff.
One of these days I'll get off this couch, but in the meantime I'm vicariously hiking through your videos.
That wasn't a very good video... it was a great video! I really loved the trail and camp footage and the editing was outstanding! You kept me engaged every minute. Thanks!
Pausing four seconds in to say, awesome we get another long video. Love the feature length stuff man, keep it up!
What a beautiful view, very nice . Thanks Sintax 77. Great photo! Love this planet!! Tell everyone I say hello Jim
You should do a clip of the burger joint you go to after the hike.
I've always wanted this - never understood why they only did it the once
David Ashley it was the one in NH when everything went wrong and Mike had a water bottle leak all over the tent-they went toDelaneys Hole In The Wall in North Conway-probably the best Irish food and great burgers in NH.Wish he would show the burger chowdown too.
You and David Gray have the best hiking videos on TH-cam. Love the videos guys!!
Love your vids... just the right mix of technical data, artsy shots, and your reassuring way of narration. I don’t know how u find the time to do these but I hope u continue. And more Sara, she’s awesome!

It is so cool to watch you deciding what to eat the fog was rolling in. 👍🏻💨 great video
Nice to see you in my area again, have camped at Betty Creak before and done that loop but little longer version the clockwise way. Pretty area :) Love your videos and thanks for getting me to order from Packit Gourmet that is some good grub.
So pumped on a new video! I’ve been rewatching videos anticipating this, keep up the awesome work!
Best Sintax video yet! Thanks for spending a little more time filming in camp. It makes for the best backpacking video. That's a very nice area too!
I get that you did this hike a really long time ago but I super appreciate that you didn't just edit out the hammock issue. We can learn from that. Also being willing to share that makes me feel like we can trust you to give us the most accurate information.

I've day hiked this loop dozens of times. It was cool watching you hike an area I know so well.👍
Great trip, thanks for sharing.

Love this video. Nice views and feel like I am there on the trail.
Ive done that same loop a few times, but quite a few years ago. Some of those climbs are no joke on the calf muscles! Great video!
Sintax great video feel like I'm hiking along with you. Learn something every time I watch you videos.keep them coming 🍔
Welcome back to NC where the humidity makes it feel 100° hotter than the actual temp.
haha, true! So glad it wasn't _actually_ 100° when I was down there. It would have felt like it was 200° :D
been waiting for another one! love watching your videos, makes me want to go hiking!

Good job with the video showing the bear coming down the tree. You picked a good area for a backpacking trip!👍
Thanks, Bob. It was a good time :)

Awesome video. Drone footage was amazing . Must be a blast!
Was planning a hike in the Nantahala forest in a couple weeks, going to do this exact loop!
That's awesome! Enjoy the trip. I've got a dozen or so potential campsites that I saw along the way tagged in my GPS file for the trip.
Hello my outdoors friend. I am thoroughly enjoying this entertaining and informative video. You take care out there, be safe and have fun. See you on the next one. 🤗

Stunning views and a great well filmed video again well done bud great watch -
I some how got unsubscribed and realized I hadn't seen any new videos for a while. Spent a rainy weekend catching up. Great vid as always
Absolutely beautiful area! Always good to see you film a trip down here in North Carolina. Thanks for sharing with us.

Hey! Glad to see you hanging out down in our neck of the woods!
Dude, so glad you came to NC.
Me too!
did same of the same loop awhile back but in other direction. first video where i actually new where you were.
I can't wait to see your winter snow filled videos this yr and the gear your gonna use this time. Now that I'm set up for freezing weather this yr I'm super excited to spend my first night in at hammock with sub zero temps to test out my new gear

You should do a hike through the town of Gary , that would be very interesting , and another one a hike through Taylor Missisippi home of the dogmen.
That piped spring reminded me of the ones in Shenandoah...great video dude..the camp shots and seeing all the gear is my favorite part..gear nerding it to the fullest i suppose..
The apricots from Trader Joe"s (California/ Blenheim variety/extra choice) are flippin' amazing.
Nice shots! It looked like some of the shots from the movie “The Last of the Mohicans”

Great video as usual, with some good views, this time.
Nice. i did that hike last summer for the eclipse. it was a great location. i believe the fire was around the same time as the Gatlinburg fires.
JIVA CUBE, no weird power-in-mouth aftertaste the Via always gives. I really like em.
Same thing - yell and make a lot of noise, they will spook pretty easily.
your videos are great, also your wife and miles. kepe up the great up the excellent videos comeing :)
Hell yea Sintax video! It's amazing how fast bears climb down trees. I experienced my first bear in a tree in the smoky's and it was crazy as well. Ever thought about trying the fancee feast version of your stove with carbon felt? I think it's more fuel efficient.
I hadn't heard of the carbon felt method before - I'll have to look into that. Thanks!
sintax77 it's a little more fuel efficient and lights up at pretty much any cold temp.
Agree that they are more efficient. Mine uses about 3/4 oz to boil 2 cups.
That would be a fuel reduction of about 25% in my experience. Sounds good to me...
sintax77 basically you cut a cat food can in half.
Great shots of nature nice videography.
That huge mushroom is called Turkey Tail and has medicinal benefits when made into a tea.
Very cool, I'll have to check that out. By medicinal benefits, are we talking like, cool patterns and micropsia or something more traditional like inflammation relief etc?
sintax77 It's sometimes used during chemo regimen other cancer treatments.
You really should make a list of the great mom and pop type burger joints, I bet you have came across some great places to eat.
Finally got some time to watch looking forward to it
Good stuff as always Sintaxx!!
Looks like you took Lower Ridge instead of Kimsey Creek. Great hike but a steeper ascent. But you gotta summit either way.
thanks for the great video, really enjoyed watching.
Great video thanks
Awesome vid sintax77!!!
