I’d pay the £65 extra just to synchronise the timing.

Fair assessment. I think the TTS range makes a far greater value proposition for diesel.

I have different makes of DCC sound likes Zimo; ESU; TCS etc with so called real sound files (ex. Youchoose - very disappointed about the S15 Maunsell not 'real' at all !!) but in the end I prefer the TTS for their simplicity and the basic sound - even with an incorrect chuff. When you have 2 or more loco's running at the same time you won't notice anyway. The running is as smooth as the 'complex' decoders and for the difference in price I get 3 TTS's for one so called high end decoder. Using a better speaker makes them outstanding for the value.

I definitely went into the higher end DCC sound expecting a little bit more than it gave with regards to sound quality, I think some of that can be solved with a slightly better speaker/sound enclosure. But I do agree that the price point is quite off putting, and the TTS price being especially tempting.

If you can't synchronize the steam "chuffs" with the wheel revolution, not worth having...seriously, there is NO reason they couldn't have set these things up with at least 4 chuffs-per-revolution! Just as easy (and cost effective) to do it right...if it was closer to being CORRECT, they would surely sell more of them!

I know, it's a major bug bear of mine! And it's not even like it's a little bit out, it's really far out and frankly looks dreadful!

@@SteamWithaScooby - Thanks for the vid. That settles it then, my entry to DCC sound will not be TTS as not synchronizing steam chuffs with wheels is a 1st class deal breaker for me. Seems utterly retarded Hornby would have puff defaults at something so unrealistic, they could have doubled everything then they might sell more.
      Diesel TTS any good though?

@@sparkshot I have a Class 37 TTS which has been upgraded with lights and a megabass. And seriously, especially with the speaker, you wouldn't be able to tell.

@@pirozcontractor6006 ok cool. Diesels maybe not a prob but steam engines are a bit different. Puffs per revolution etc.

I'm in my 81st year, and so will not be switching to sound of any make, but it has always seemed to me that the chuff of steam locos is generally too sibilant and lacks the deep throated quality of larger locos. I was a keen spotter in the 50s/60s and could identify many different types just by sound alone. And it wasn't just the larger locos. Midland-built locos from Jinties to 4-4-0s all had what we called the "Derby chuff", caused I believe by the annular cavity in Midland chimney castings, while Black fives and Jubilees both had deeper notes especially when pulling out with a heavy express. Britannias could be spotted a mile off by the plume of steam and loud roar as the safety valves lifted when steam was shut off on the approach causing the water to surge away from the firebox. Add to that the perfect smoke ring I once saw lifting above the Jinty station pilot at Derby. The thing is, I can recall all these things and many more so I can imagine them when I operate, and the gadget isn't yet made that can imitate every one of these effects from Jinty smoke rings to the stomach-vibrating sound of the solitary Fell diesel simply standing in Platform 4 idling away before it pulled out, engaging each of its four engines in turn. Happy days indeed.

I actually preferred the TTS. The Youchoose sound "hollow".

I stumbled across your site while looking for information on BR Mk1 carriages. Though I model in Gauge 1 I have found your site both informative and amusing. The delivery is excellent and I like the Err count (I tend to umm). I will be using many of your tips on my own models. Having worked through your postings to date I look forward to future editions though you seem to have a fascination with the great way round. Still, a slightly warped facet is essential as none of us is perfect. Keep up the good work.
