Uni Kuru Toga Alpha Gel Switch Mechanical Pencil Review

- This is review of the new Uni Alpha Gel Switch ( amzn.to/3tg7ReS ), the newest Kuru Toga pencil. It was released in January 2021, so it's quite new. This one has the classic Alpha Gel squishy grip and it has a "Hold Mode" which lets you turn off the Kuru Toga rotating lead system. This makes the pencil rock solid, losing the Kuru Toga rattle.
Note: There was a Kuru Toga Alpha Gel before this ( amzn.to/2OWt7aQ ) but it lacked the switch into hold mode. Totally forgot to mention that.

This is why I like Uni. They are always innovating.
Right always innovating, or you just buy a regular mechanical pencil and have a kuru toga, this seems like such a useless feature, there are VERY few situations where I wouldn't want the Kuru toga feature on, not to mention it's not even the advanced lmao
This is my work horse. Even owning crazy overpriced pencils, I still prefer this one. It just feels right. The weight, the position of the parts, the grip, the shape, the way it feels to write... I can't pinpoint a specific reason for it and think it's just a perfect fit. If they added a shaker or some efficiency mechanism for lead advancement, I think I'd quit buying pencils. No need. Nothing would be better.
I know the feeling. I used to have a lot of keyboards and then one day i found the right one and I was done!
@@unsharpen Are you in the custom mechnical keyboard hobby as well?
Great update, Sal. Would like to grab one once it is available. Thank you.
Wish they would just make a single Kuru Toga that combines all the best features: knurled/gel grip (just something), new engine, sliding lead sleeve, and now this new hold setting I guess... instead of separating all of them into different models
It’s weird right. Like they are saving up all for some ultimate model ... one day.
No weird i think, since rumor upcoming mech pencil is jetstream edge body with kurutoga engine
@@cilllee2308 Now that would be a helluva pencil!! 👀

WOW! That's a real beauty, I want one just for how it looks.
Beauty Mechanical Pencil, great design with hold mode...Thanks for the video...
I'm going to have to check this one out. I'm digging the blue color
You can use a bit of tape to get most of the dust off the grip and clean it up a bit
thanks so much i was so confused on how to use this lol
Great videos keep them coming
Thanks, will do!
I'm not a fan of the big grip myself, but people with arthritis or RSD issues would like this.
it looks amazing, hope they release something matte and minimalistic like this for the normal non-kuru toga alpha gel pens as well bcs the design they have now is very outdated
Great video Sal! Alpha-gel's a silicone grip AFAIK, not rubber. Great pencil, could be a nice upgrade from the standard Alpha-Gel Kuru Toga.
Yes, silicone, you are quite right! Slipped up there.
Will they release a 0.7 version?
I disassembled mine to get rid of a jam and now I’m not sure how to put it together is there anyway you could showcase the inside and how it goes back?
İs this one use advance engine or standart model’s engine?
I really wish they'd use this straight sleeve on every model. The advance has the best design but the wonky-ass sliding sleeve makes it so bad to use it makes me sad. This is my current favourite kuru toga. I have it in 0.5 and 0.3 aswell. It's amazing.
Still using the first gen a-gel kuru toga, doesn’t seem need to upgrade to this switch version
Big disadvantage for me is that it does not have an automatic lead advance mechanism.
Thanks for this thorough review! You are right, not sure when I would use a kuru toga in hold form rather than just grabbing another pencil.
Have you by chance tried the Platinum Pro-use 171 mechanical pencil? I've been looking at getting one ever since I saw one at jet pens.
Yes, it's not bad! I'll have a Pro-use video up in the coming weeks
Maybe if you had to take one with you somewhere. Regular mode for writing and hold mode for drawing.
odd they wouldn't use the advance system, that essentially makes it indistinguishable from the old kuru toga alpha gel
Well, this one looks much more modern and has the Hold setting, but you are correct.
Any review for the Staedtler Triplus 444?
No not yet
The hd is about the hardness HD II is the most hardest grip the HD I is the softest from the A-gel series
fixed sleeve, so not pocket safe, however sliding an alpha gel grip in your shirt pocket would be rather grippy and frustrating anyway. Uni just can't satisfy the differing needs of every user, so keeps coming up with new models for different market segments...not sure it works. The Roulette is the most beautiful and usable model for me.
HOW TO REFILL THIS PENCIL ?
can you stop it from rotating?
I just got one, does anyone know how to put more graphite in
In the top under the eraser
They can't seem to innovate so they release something with a rubber grip... well okay then. Not sure who asked for it. The Kura Toga tech can get in the way if you're doing technical drawing and you want to use the sharp edge of the lead, so the hold could be useful at times. It's hard for me to imagine who really wants or needs this thing though.
Well, afaik, the alpha gel kuru toga already existed before this. The innovation is the "switch," however useful that may actually be
HD refers to the led, soft-hard very hard ect
