Nissan Ariya Review

  • Today, James and I have been driving the new 2022 Nissan Ariya. Nissan have been dragging their heels in the EV world despite being market leaders 10 years ago, by hanging on to Leaf and adding slightly bigger batteries and front and rear lifts, so it's nice to finally see something on the road. The Ariya is an SUV, loads of space, not too much power, and quite expensive, so lets see what it's actually like for us.

    Really excellent review! You seem to focus on what it's like to live with the car, instead of comparing specs and roadholding as most reviewers do. Also very good to get the perspective from both of you, I very much agree with Kate in disliking unnecessary big cars. I'm still eagerly waiting for something like a Fiesta EV.....

    It's not cheap, but it actually is such a refined car that it's worth it. The mentioned 60000 bucks version really is as PACKED as it is car somebody really thought out well. It has dimmable interior roof lights (small thing, but I'd love that for our kids), heated steering wheel and heated and cooled seats in the front that all tie into the AC for automatic operation if desired (finally somebody thought of that), one of the best air filtration systems out there (Plasma Cluster system - way ahead of Teslas bioweapon bla bla bs), memory-steering wheel, -seats, -mirrors, -center console (!) plus a video rear view mirror so complete (!) recallability depending on what key you are using, an electric tray that comes out of the dash with a huge storage space underneath, heated and reclining rear seats, alcantara everwhere, really good Matrix lights, a huge 10" head up display, heated wind screen, double glased windows front and side for better sound insulation, it uses a meta material for sound dampening that is a fraction of the weight and size of usual damping mats, e4orce all wheel drive arguably is the best EV 4x4 system out there, not only providing superior grip and cornering but also actively balancing pitch and roll of the cabin for an even smoother ride, it does 0-60 in about 5.5 seconds, it's got a ten speaker premium sound system, an alarm system, a two hard drive operating system that can do firmware updates on the fly, so no need to stop, heck even the wiper fluid comes out of the wipers themselves...Pro Pilot 1.5 is great as well, super nice japanese accents like that ambient "lamp style" lighting...so many awesome little things that really add up...plus very good build quality...I mean...if you spend that kind of money...this is a car well spent on in my book. Also the 87kWh battery has an amazing charging curve.
    Frunk: Yes, there is none, the AC takes up that space, but in return it has the most interior space of any EV in the 4.6m class. 1775 liters are a LOT for an EV of that length, even more than what the Enyaq has, and that's 5cm longer.
    Last but not least, I'd like to question whether it's advisable to do with cars, what we did with so many other things that once were great and nowadays are almost impossible to get in decent quality. Yes, chinese stuff is cheap, but that's kind of the catch 22. It's not sustainable. People suffer building these things and - in this case - cars. The things and cars are so so at best, the environmental impact is huge and overall you still are paying a lot, your return on investment on the other hand is not so good. If you are willing to really look closely that is. So I'd like to question: Why shouldn't we pay 60000 bucks for a quality piece of kit that very obviously took a lot of people who love their job a lot of time and thinking to put together? A car that is indeed build in Japan, under great conditions. Something that is build with pride and with care for the environment and that is sold at a price that can sustain the manufacturer and the dealers in a way that they are content and happy to help of any issues arise? Why is this not money well spent?
    Efficiency - not sure what was going on with the model you had, but those values are not normal. The Ariya is on sale in japan for almost a year now and power consumption figures are between 4,5 and 8 km/kWh for the model variant you were driving, so actually very very good.
    Ah, and don't worry about the width - it's actually exactly the same as the Model 3 ;)

    Great to hear Florence's opinions again, she really knows her stuff!🤗 I was amazed at how far back you seemed to be, James, in the rear seat, it looked cavernous.
    We just had our old car written off so have gone electric much sooner than we hoped with a Hyundai Ioniq 38kW, 20 plate. We'd like to find out if Cleevelys could look after it for us. I believe you told me once that you do come down to Kent. Should I be asking you this or is it best if I find a number for the firm? No rush of course as it's had a least a mechanical check before it left Hilton garage up in Derby and it seems in great nick. Sorry if I'm out of order here, quite excited😁😂👍

    I am in Canada in an area where we have huge snow storms, deep snow at times, and very cold weather for about 6 months of the year. There are days where the streets are not cleared very quickly by the city workers. I use a 4WD SUV for winter driving. I presently have the 2022 Pathfinder Platinum 4WD with the Off Road Option and fully equipped.
    I ordered the new Ariya Platinum AWD e-4FORCE/Performance with the extended battery range fully equipped. I am buying this one to use as a second vehicle for both winter and summer driving. During the cold weather and on snow covered ground EVs normally lose about 20% to 30% of their range. This is a big reason why I ordered the this version of Ariya. I also like the conveniences of a high end model. In Canada electricity is not very expensive. With driving about 35 miles per day I calculated I may spend about $25 per month maximum for electricity to run the Ariya. My Pathfinder is costing me about $400 per month for gasoline. The Pathfinder needs oil changes every 5000 miles, and also other types of expensive maintenance from time to time. The operational cost of the Ariya will be a lot less for me. I want to keep the Pathfinder for when I have to do long trips outside of the city, or to pull a trailer, and if I have to transport a lot of items.

    Thanks for another great team review, Florence has a ’shopping age’ of what...18? 😂 ...Good to know how dynamically good the car is, ride, handling, comfort, noise etc...but leaving aside the price which is outrageous they really have missed an opportunity on the charging speed. Hyundai and Kia have set the benchmark for charging speed, along with Tesla of course. The Ariya is on the same platform as the Renault Megane e-tech which also has a quoted charging rate of 130 kW...would like to know more about your experience of only 80kW with the car. Considering the money they are asking for this car they should be offering 150 kW or above. ...unless of course the car can maintain a high charging speed for longer.

    " I wouldn't buy it because of its size" The Ariya is actually shorter in length (same width) than the Model 3 but 8" higher at roof level , shows how the perspective of an SUV alters things. • @Urbanbenelux
    @Urbanbenelux ปีที่แล้ว

    James, I think that your perceived value of the Ariya is correct, for many of us this seems too expensive, but the Ariya has no trouble finding buyers and they even find themselves closing order books in several markets, so in terms of running a business, Nissan nailed the price and maybe it's not even high enough. The model Y and Model 3 are also way overpriced but they can't build them fast enough, so I think that the price should be considered within that context.

      @@Jamesandkate in the US you can't order one, we have around 7,000 units of intial production Pre-ordered. I think the issue is most people are waiting for the 87KW usable pack. The UK prices are also a ton higher than the US in regards to pricing. for the Long range pack, USD long range venture + is $45,995 for 304 miles of EPA range. Convert that to euros or pounds and you are almost the same $$$ amount in euros and only $38,123 pounds. If you want similar kit to the UK spec Ariya and you are $48,995 or $40,604. You mention that it's not very fast, with 0-100km/h in 7.5s, but with the performance edition being a relatively small upcharge of only 5k (here in the US, and only supposedly...not out yet), the dual motor, AWD variant is likely to be a lot faster at 4.5s, and it might be the cheapest electric vehicle in the Ariya's size class that also has AWD. There are cheaper base trims from other brands, but I've not seen many that are still competitively priced once you pile on the packages. Sadly, Europe is getting all of the EVs, while the US is still most just Teslas and Chevy Bolts for now, and a Chevy Bolt is not a recommended car with the number of manufacturing faults that there have been

    I really want Nissan to make a new re-designed Leaf, rather than this monster. They could go back to the original concept of an innovative, affordable medium-sized car, rather than SUV. Take the battery from this, scale it down a bit, and then re-issue the Leaf with an improved range and no meaningful battery degradation.

  • @johnkellett7797
    @johnkellett7797 ปีที่แล้ว

    The lack of a ‘froot’ is indicative of a badly designed front end. To have a space under the bonnet that is too large for the technical requirements is just a waste of space. Is the length of the bonnet still required to represent the male appendage? No, certainly not! For any length of car a shorter bonnet means more internal space and boot!
