- Long Train Knocks Down Signal ... This long FEC mixed freight Train had to go slow as it had to wait for 2 Tri Rail trains to cross before it got the green at Iris Interlocking and then knocked down the signal! He was headed East at the E. 10th Ave railroad crossing which is just a block away from Iris (where FEC and CSX tracks meet in Hialeah, Florida ).
Please help me with travel fund to document abandoned rails in other states and cities. All I ask for is $1 or $2 monthly.

I came here expecting to see a signal physically being taken down by a train.
sall good
@ MARK R: Me too! ROFLOL ! ! !
RailROL82 LOL no, most people would not be familiar with that slang term.
Yeah
Jovetj or if a vehicle damages the signal, leaving the signal in the path of a train that is too close or too fast to stop
Clicked for some cool destruction of signals, stayed for the super cool tenders, consist, and casual commentary. Not often do people make videos like these so entertaining! Nice stuff
If you kept recording just a bit longer I swear this train would've reappeared from where it began because Earth is round.
No. That would only be true if Earth had a diameter of a few miles.
Earth is flat. You obviously aren't reading the news these days.
ackmino well what about water the water will go to space and there will no space and if you are in a boat and ran out of space you would fall
@@ackmino did you fall on your head at birth?
Watch out for triggered flattards.
Don’t you just love the noises and sounds that all that iron and steel a clanging and banging as a train rolls down that track. Superb engineering

Rachel Haluska indeed it is young Rachel. My stick on fault, I am persistently told is, I am far too Honest🤔🤗
I agree
That guy waits 10 minutes, then risks his life because he can't wait 5 more seconds. Stupidity never ceases to amaze me.
Felt like *more* than 10 Minutes to me?!! Nonetheless, you are right about impatient drivers... Ole Fred in the loco still could have maybe put the hammer down a bit harder!
@@PS-gg2rd He went right as the train passed. There could have been a train on the second track going the oposite direction that crossed just as he did. And he wouldn't have seen it because it was obscured by the first train.
Why is it stupid , because you are or what ....
This is railroad terminology ,stay off troll....
@@JungleYT haha have you ever been on a freight train. They aren't exactly rocketships!
Watched a video titled bridge collapse. For about 2 minutes the video shows ice chunks hitting the bridge and then as the bridge starts to move,it stops.
We dont get pissed .... We get PAID all day... Moving or not.
If your getting pissed off, then you need to find a new job..
Great answer
My mom doesn't have a job.
@Jesse hes talking about sitting in track waiting for the train to pass lol and getting paid to sit there and wait
Yeah I got the wrong idea when I read the title, I get it now!
same
Yeah
Same here
I have NEVER heard that and I come from a family of railroad workers. When I read that I thought the train was going to literally KNOCK the signal down as in breaking it and in need of repair.
I watched a video a while back that stated something like train knocks down crossing signal, and when the train came by, because some idiot ran the gate and left it broken on the track, the train took out the signal.
To me the wording should have been "long train waits for green signal during slow approach," then signal goes red {as it is supposed to} after the train has entered the block in the descriptor area of the video or at least more details or your definition of "knocking down a signal".
Otherwise the title could be construed as click bait when the signal never got knocked down.
Nice video and train, but I live in Florida, born and raised and I have never, not once heard that term until this video.
And I've called CSX and other RR's when I've found broken or faulty signals along the rails or crossings. And I've never heard any conductor or engineer I know call it out like that either.
you were baited, dude. As all of as.
I grew a beard waiting for this train!
me too
Rolando Gutierrez😂😂😂😂😂
I was a teenager when I started watching it, now I'm 46...🙄
lol so funny
I grew some mushrooms under my roll...
By the way, people need to be careful and not do what the truck did at the end. It's not unusual for a train to be headed in the other direction of the other trucks, which case it would have been a very bad day for that truck! People, wait for the arms to lift up before you go!!
That is the right thing to do--wait for the crossing gates to rise before crossing the tracks.
Same for pedestrians
Glad to hear real bells and not those awful e-bells!
Fight me
e-bells are better for hearing impaired. Also little maintenance. Real bells requiregular lubrication, contact cleaning and clapper adjustment.
There is nothing wrong with the Electronic E Bell we have them here in Alaska
Yeah... but I'm NOT a fan of American-type bell operations. The fact that it only rings when the gates are going down scares me. For the visually impaired, if they didn't hear the initial bells, they may not realize it until it's too late (unless they hear the train's horn and the engineer doesn't forget or isn't a no-horn zone).
In my country of Canada, we use almost exactly the same signal system as you do, except for one key difference - the bells ring continuously until the gates are back up again.
What would happen if you just neededto get to that next street so you jump on the train
The colors of the signal lights give information to the Engineer operating the train. The safetran signals seen in this video can have 1, 2, or 3 signal heads, with all 3 heads usually containing 3 lights, and on rare occasions 4 Lights. The top light is Green, the middle is Yellow, and the bottom is Red. Only one light is lit on each head at any given time, and the pattern of colors that the different heads display is called an Aspect. The Aspect of the signal can tell the Engineer to continue, or resume at Track Speed, the maximum speed allowed for the track beyond that Signal post which is the Highest Aspect, until he reaches the next Signal, this Aspect is called CLEAR and displays a Green light on the top Head and Red lights on all heads below. The Lowest Aspect is STOP and the Engineer must Stop the train just before reaching the the Signal post that is displaying the STOP Aspect, this Aspect displays Red lights on all Heads on the Signal Post. If the Engineer encounters a Stop Signal and fails to stop the train before any part of the train passes any part of the Signal Post, by Evan an inch, they will be taken out of service and most likely Terminated, There are many different Signal Aspects used on the different Railroads in the US, but the two mentioned above are common to all US Railroads that use Safetran Signals. Basically all us Railroads also use other Aspects to tell the Engineer information about speed restrictions, stop Signals, etc ahead, at the next or second Signal.
While watching the video, it started out showing Red on all 3 heads or STOP, and the train continued to sit there for a while. After both Commuter trains crossed the Diamond ( where 2 sets of tracks cross each other) the Signal where the train was sitting which would have been a Stop Signal switched to a Proceed at Restricted Speed Aspect which depending on the Railroad and where the train was, the speed would be restricted to somewhere between 5 and 15 MPH And Be Ready to Stop, or a speed that you can Stop within half the distance to anything that is on your track
The train then proceeded towards the Signal at the diamond and started to stop when the Aspect changed to Clear and the train started to accelerate. and when it passed the signal the Aspect “Dropped to a Stop Aspect known in US Railroad jargon as “Knocking the Signal Down”
As they Knocked the Signal Aspect Down from the Highest Aspect (CLEAR) to the Lowest Aspect (STOP)
You know your stuff! Happy Thanksgiving!
Many thanks for that clear and logical explanation. I now understand what "knocking the signal down" means in railroad jargon :)
A lot of cool stuff going on in this video. The train with 2 natural gas tenders and seeing the light knocked down. That was awesome!
Was that train runing on natural gas vs diesel?
Jaw Tooth hi
Jaw Tooth fec runs lng tenders with all their locomotives.
When I was a kid back in the 50's, my dad used to take me to the Columbus OH union station, track level, to watch the old steam locomotives roll by.
The steam, the smoke blowing into my face are memories I will never forget. And the noise of those beautiful engines still rings in my mind. Good video, thanks for posting.
I grew up in Columbus, and one of first jobs out of high school was a printing company next to Columbus’s Union Station. Of course it is long gone with a huge convention center in its place. Must have been the late 1970’s.
Interesting, first time I've seen locomotives running on natural gas. And hauling the fuel tanks just like steamers hauling oil and water behind em. Neat. Good work.
The BN tried that at one time. Not enough power for there needs.

Do the tenders double as road slugs? CSX is known to haul fuel ⛽ on some its road slugs.

Actually that was very stupid.

right!
We will never know.
If another train come with 35 miles pr. hour, it is about 50 feet pr. second.
Seeing, making decission, accelerating... all takes time.
I think he just assumed there was no more trains.
Welcome to south Florida
What if there was a Brightline train coming the other direction a few moments after the train has passed at double the speed? and he is like "why hasn't the gate gone up? let me go around as I have sitting here so damn long." then BOOM! People like that you will see on the news as a tragedy in a few weeks until they get it in their skulls that Broward is a changed place.

I would have laughed had another train came thru going the opposite direction as the white truck drove around the crossing arm at 14:49.

A cop should have been sitting there on the opposite side. LOL
ksbear2 Technically, it's a running a red light violation while the red lights are flashing, even if the arms are moving up/down.
Drat. I wanted to see the train veer off the track and take out the hardware, then jump back onto the track again.

Notice that green traffic lights on highways are below red, while on RRs the green is above the red. This is called "Irish Persuasion" or 'high green' when illuminated. The tradition goes back to the ball system where a 'high ball' hoisted on a rope meant proceed, hence the term "highball."
Thank you!
I hadn'y seen the natural gas tender before. That was neat.
So do these locomotives run entirely on natural gas, other are they hybrid?
I see those things all the time on the FEC, but had no idea what they were. Now I know.
Florida East Coast Railroad converted their fleet of locomotives to run on LNG [liquefied natural gas] ,the 1st US railroad to be 100% LNG capable
@Bongo Cat no silly! In rail terminology, a tender is a railcar that carries fuel and or water for a locomotive.
So awesome! Luv ur commentary! Best ever!
That's an interesting mix of cars this train has. I was expecting to see that this train was hauling a few tons of rock, but never a mixed freight like this train had. I looked into what those tank cars are loaded with. Some looking around the net says that the hazmat placards with the number 1987 indicates that those tank cars are loaded with ethanol. I was also surprised to see the IRVING logos on those cars carrying lumber. IRVING is a conglomerate company headquartered in Saint John, New Brunswick. That means that lumber came from either Canada or one of the northeastern US states.
Yes, including those waiting for the train to go by.
GrnArrow092 I must not have been looking at those tankers properly. I saw the HAZMAT signs, but not the 1987.
GrnArrow092 FEC 202 is famous for its manifest, this train always hauls a manifest, including rocks, Intermodal, Autoracks, ethanol & freight cars ALL in the mix, my channel is full of this train specifically LOL.
I did see Irving recruitment material just the other day mentioning that their lumber ships as far as Florida, but I was pretty well taken aback to see those logos too.
That's one of the main trains that go along the Florida East Coast Railway to Miami. The number of trains are so few that it's often easier to just send all the cargo with one train.
Thanks for posting this from the way east coast. The west coast trains here have always been within earshot of where I've lived. Pretty cool.
The dimwit driving the white truck is lucky no trains were coming from the other direction. I dont think he even looked.
He should've been turned into the police.
He could have easily been killed...
This is why train car accidents still happen lol
Too many people be impatient because of the train. I love it when the train comes by and people have to wait for it to pass by. Plus that's a really long train.
You have no idea where he was driving to or what he was now 12 minutes late for due to the ridulous length of the train, waiting for a normal train is one thing, this was just taking the piss
Sort of surreal to be watching a train video and hearing one outside my house.
That's awesome lol! I have to experience that someday. BTW, this Sunday I'm posting my 4 year anniversary Best of Video, it will be 55 min long... so get your popcorn ready!
*2 trains pass by at the same minute*
This guy must be pissed.
Las Vegas slots
@RailROL82 ain't that the truth. Where I live, they go around the gates if the train takes to long to get there. They need cameras there to ticket them.
That's putting it mildly
At least they didn't pull up to the signal and stop and block the crossing for 15 minutes. Trains in my area seem to want to put 2 cars past the crossing and stop for as long as 40 minutes.
No, but they do it anyway. The fine is not a deterrent assuming someone even calls the city and they issue a fine.
Should be an addition to new series when danger lurks you never know when your times up take a look at this guy in the white pick up truck seemingly waits for death at a level crossing waits nearly 15 minutes for a frieght train the risks his life trying to go around boom gates while still down not knowing if theres a train coming the other way.
When you said "knocks down a signal", I got *completely* the wrong idea! Really nice work, as usual.
Interesting cool,video...first time I’ve seen natural gas or propane powered locomotives. Great commentary too!
I'm catching up on comments tonight, hope all is well. Thanks as always.
1. hey! my uncle lives near there. 2. by now there should be a bridge over each track.
They're not planning on doing bridges over there tracks...
That appeared to be alot of Lime stone up front. interesting to see the many railroads on the Auto-racks including BNSF, Union Pacific, Norfolk and southern. and as long as that train was it is interesting that there was no dpu. although it is very flat grade there in florida.
168 car train.. Give or take a few from him turning around. That's a pretty good one. Must be really level track for just 4 locos, I'd think there would be more but I'm not an expert.
You're right on the money, Jake. FL is as level as it gets! Thanks as always for the views and comments!
The phrase “knock down the signal” means to clear a signal and make it turn red

We had a Sheriff in Midland run a gate like that. The opposing track had a west bound intermodal catch him right as he got on the track.
When a train is delayed on approach to an interlocking and it exceeds a specified time because of opposing traffic or other issues there is usually a "Short Approach" in the 300 ft range that will need to be occupied before the signal will clear.
At around 5:52, you can barely see another green signal, just beyond the interlock. Obviously, that gets "knocked down," too. Great Video!

RailROL82 It had a good clean, sharp sound to it! I'm sure it's in pretty good shape! I'd imagine try rail owns the diamonds since they are the ones going over the FEC main so with them being a passanger line the maintenance would have to be kept up fairly well for public safety!

You can tell that some of those graffiti 'artists' were real professionals having gone to the trouble to find a color-matched yellow for the Union Pacific cars.
Yup, when I was in the U.S. I was bowled over at how damn longs the freight trains are.
I don't remember which station it was but the Amtrak I was on stopped with the last two or three cars across the crossing for about 25 minutes. The conductor told me there was nothing wrong, just a routine stop. The frustration for drivers at these crossings must be astronomical.
AMAZING VIDEO!! I never seen a train "knock-down" or, trigger a crossing gait before!!! thanks man, that was awesome,, please upload more!! LOL geeze
RailROL82 I was being sarcastic LOL... trains are a regular part of where I live that you almost can tune them out. getting stuck at a crossing gait is a way of life. it's sarcastic humor because I do like trains, I'm just tired of doing searches for this that and the other and it's like the titles and thumbnails are never actually what you see. I'm just curious why clicks are more important than the video itself. people like trains, planes and fast cars, they just go out in left field when creating a title and thumbnail...
I thought the train was gonna actually knock it down
That is railroad lingo for knocking the green signal down to red, showing an occupied block. Thanks as always for the views and comments, Trackside!
Knocks- moving (especially over rail joints)
Down- passing the crossing
If you say so
Nice thats a lot of trains in a couple of minutes
Wow, that train had a lot of everything! Cool video!
Thanks as always for the views and comments!
Nice catch! Traffic at the train tracks lol.
The only thing that the train is missing is passenger cars. :D
You don't usually see mixed passenger and freight trains anymore, though. At least not in the US. For that matter, most of the long distance passenger rail service in the US is handled by Amtrak, which doesn't do freight service at all. There are still some smaller passenger lines along the east coast, but most of them don't go more than a few hundred miles total.
Wow! You could have had a baby, then went it to pre-school while that train was passing by. But, what a train! A small town could be built up with the materials on that train. It would be interesting to know where it was going and for what purpose. Even without being in the line, I would have sat and watched it. I love big trains, little trains, all trains. Thanks to all of the men that devote their lives to making choo-choos, choo. Just my opinion.

I bet the guy in the truck was so mad for having to sit there for an hour
🤣
@@noahhaley0640 An hour? The unedited video is only 15 minutes.
Mad is better than dead!!!
Reminds me of the time I spent in a small town in Nebraska about 15 years ago. There was a BNSF line that ran through the town and a few side lines to service the local granary. Of all the roads that crossed that set of tracks, only one had a bridge that you could drive under, so if they were working on moving cars around or waiting for one of the coal trains to pass through, the only way across was that one road.
It was almost as bad in Kearney, Nebraska, where again they only had a few roads that weren't blocked by passing trains, and Union Pacific had 3 main lines through the town. At least they didn't have a granary in the middle of everything, but there were a number of times when we had to wait for 3-4 trains to pass before we could cross at one of the other crossings. Luckily the crossings had the automated warning horns in place, so you didn't have to worry about not hearing the horn for the 3rd or 4th train over the noise of the earlier trains.
"Knocks down". I do not think it means what you think it means. ;) I must learn this railfan terminology someday.
RR terminology. When the locomotive passes the signal it knocks it down from a green to red, showing an occupied block.
Thank you railROL 82.
A little bit of everything on that one. Great catch.
Excellent video R! Four ES44's leading, that's a lot of power! Poor people who had to wait for the train to pass, lol!
Exactly!
How long do you want this train?
Engineers: yes.
I'm guessing almost 2 miles and everything they had in the yard lol.
The UP crossing by my work (7th Standard Rd near CA SR 99 Bakersfield CA) had similar back ups (1-2 miles) when trains came through. The city and Cal Trans finally extended the 7th Standard overpass over the tracks and widened the road in 2007, which eliminated the back ups.
No I dont think so. I have heard something that theyre supposed to clear the crossing (even if it means breaking the train up) if the train is stopped for like more than 15 min.
I literally thought the train was going to knock down the signal gate but it ment something else.
👑 It's shocking that i came on here to watch a fast train knocking down a train single light but when I read the comments down below I understand I have misunderstood but still a very cool video. I love trains👑
14:47 That white pickup at the end had no way to know that there wasn't a train on the other set of tracks.
He couldn't wait an additional 20 seconds?
Tell the police to stake out that crossing when there's a long train.
The last couple of cars carried lumber from Maine or New Brunswick, Canada. Irving is headquartered here in Saint John.
That train could supply a whole city with domestic product for a long while.
As long as that city needed tons of rock, sure.
Reminds me of the people you see creeping at traffic lights. Awesome catch on the LNG engines too.

There you go, gate runners never fails. LOL
You can set your clock by them in Miami lol. Thanks as always for the views and comments!
Great video, thanks for showing the whole train. I love hearing them pick up speed.
That "knock down the signal" expression is a hangover from the days of upper-quadrant semaphores. Proceed aspect was a vertical blade and when the train past it, it would "tumble down" to horizontal, which was the stop aspect. Railroad workers whoud say the train "knocked down the signal", and the term became synonymous with a train taking a signal from green to red. On another note, never cut around the gates like the idiot in the white pickup did. The train on your side could mask a train on the other track approaching the crossing, and you could stand a good chance of being hit by it! Wait for the gates to go up first. Remember...safety first!
You're right on the money, Mark. This is one of the best comments I've read in a while. Thanks as always for your views and comments!
Your more than welcome. And please continue posting those interesting videos. Stay safe and healthy!
For whatever reason, I just get a kick out of those little railroad crossing gates that are at sidewalks sometimes. I don't know why, but seeing the gate come down at a pedestrian walkway is just...I guess 'cute' would be the word, but they're more fascinating than anything else.
I'll bet that they stop the occasional distracted person who is wandering along staring at a cellphone.
