  • Howdy! fellow adventurers. In this episode, Wavey and I continue down the Tombigbee toward Mobile Bay. We do some ill-advised running in the dark, take in some stunning natural beauty, and meet a few interesting people along the way. As always, thanks for continuing to keep us company out here.

Born and raised on the Tombigbee. The family settled just north of where the Coffeeville Damn is now back in the late 1560's. They were some the first settlers of Alabama. Oh, the history I could tell you. Great video, kinda made me homesick!

I totally get your "Shanty Boat" analogy. I am 72, in great health but live out west with little water. I used to follow that whole British Narrow boat thing. I almost moved there to live it for a while, but your channel has given me a reason to look nearer to home. You hit on the tax thing. Narrow boating is taxed to death! Tax to own the boat. Tax to use the canal system. Fee's at every marina. Higher fuel costs. The need for heating 9 months per year. Most of which you don't need to do. I am watching current videos as well as catching up on past ones. Keep on at it, the channel is great!

Reference your new wood stove: burning driftwood is an idea. A couple of things to watch for are (1) living things in or on the wood. Some of those things you may not want aboard the boat. And (2) don’t burn driftwood wood from a salt water source. Salt will be in the wood, and will rust out your new stove in a year.

Well I just discovered your channel and enjoyed the ride. I spent 15 years locking at the McAlpine locks in Louisville KY before retiring in 2016. Sure seen my share of shantys during that time. And wished it was me floating down river. Also had plans on doing it after retirement but the wife and grandkids blew that out of the water. But I still have my dreams and who knows it might happen someday but till then I'll sit on my ridge and watch the wildlife. Hey safe sailing and you have a new follower.

Hi guys, you and Wavey. You will be much happier with your light if you can move it forward and maybe down so it doesn't shine on your front deck. That motor bike reflecting destroys your night vision and you couldn't see a big snag right in front of you with that the light shining on ithe front deck.. If you can't move it forward then move it back farther on the overhead so the edge of your roof will shade the front deck. You may learn that running at night is very comfortable. Usually less wind and choppy water. Very peaceful. If you use the light sparingly you'll find that you can see much without the light on. One caveat, don't run in bright moonlight. The shadows get very black and can hide all sorts of dangerous obstacles. Cloudy moonlight is much easier and the gray shadows are easier to see in to. A movable spotlight is nice but the light that you have can do much.

Just found you. Fun stuff. I will be watching your past stuff on this trip.
About 4 years ago I bought and motored a 28ft sailboat across Florida on the Okeechobee Waterway from Cape Coral to the Intercoastal Waterway then north to Jacksonville. Took about 6 weeks with breakdowns and weather delays, but I was in no hurry. I really enjoyed the trip in a Sovereign 28 CC in spite of en-route repairs. The locks were a lot smaller but easily done single handed. It was a great trip through the heart of the Everglades and up the Atlantic coast of Florida on the ICW.

Did you do a video that covers in detail your electrical system and how you have integrated motor alternator, 120v electrical charger, solar panels (how many watts each), monitors, controllers, sizes, voltages, amperage, etc.? Now that you have had months of experience with your setup and worked out the kinks, we'd also like to hear about what you like, what you don't like and what you'd change in your system. When you mentioned that the sailboat was tied double. It reminded me of sailing on Lake of the Woods, Ontario/Minnesota, for race week, back in the 90's, the race was called off for lack/no wind.
We tied three monohulls and one medium sized cat abreast, we ended up turning up the music, danced on the Cat's trampoline, and everyone broke out the refreshments, as we motored down the channel, to the nights anchorage, using the largest mono's engine. Blew the carbon out of the engine.

Great adventure Brenton when we came through that area a few years ago there were six deer crossing the river. In two weeks, my wife and myself will be trailering our 2020 Corsair 880 Sport trimaran to the mouth of the Tennessee River to commute/sail back to Key Largo, Florida. This boat has a retractable carbon fiber mast so getting under bridges shouldn't be a problem. Fully extended the mast is 39'4". If we have to motor, which I'm sure we will do well, the little 9.9 horsepower engine at 60% power will push us along at 7.4 knots and burn very little fuel.

Once again a great video! I do hope that when you come up through the Intracoastal waterway in NC that you give some advance notice so that we can fire up the pontoon and come out to see you. Either Edenton or Hertford off of the Albemarle sound and if nothing else Elizabeth city.

1st viewer! I found your channel in 2024 and one of my favorites. I live close to the dock you stopped at above Bay Springs dam. Would have liked to have met you and Wavy. My daughter has a beagle and loves to walk him there. She lives near the White City bridge on the intercoastal waterway. Nice dock there and a safe place to spend the night!

Nice stove ya got their. The wife and I were building out a 40 ft long Bluebird All American school bus until we abandoned the project. We were interested in stoves like that at one point. Now we have the 20 year old Wallace diesel heater and a Mr Buddy heater as a back up. We had a very very cold night on the Dory last year when the Wallace wouldn't ignite. We still had our fun though. I think I realized this morning one of the things I really enjoy about your channel and it's your comment section. Everyone here is very nice and seem adventure/family oriented. Also you don't take a lot of crap which kinda cleans up the place a bit. 😂 Anyhoo I think it's espresso time my friend. Top of the morning to ya! ☕😁

When we get her back she is gonna be purty! Can't wait to get out there again. The 1648 is a great fishing boat but it doesn't feel the same cruising around. Being INSIDE the boat instead of being ON the boat make all the difference in the world as you know. Hehe. Enjoying the frequent videos. 😁
