I thought I was the only one that enjoyed long walks through a cemetary. Thank you for another great video that was very helpful. May you be blessed for your assistance.
Loved your video. I’m a beginner and I really appreciate you taking the time to do this video. I make some of these mistakes. Luckily I have a grinder though so I don’t have to do my grinding by hand.
Finally finding a stained glass artist who actually explains this art! I want to learn to do this but many channels just show what they’re doing with music without explaining anything.😊
These are great tips! I’m just coming back 10:03 to see if I can do this again after 20 years of putting my stained glass aside. Your tips are super helpful! Your baby is cute! Thank you so much!
I'm in the Bay Area too and originally from the East Bay! I love your videos, btw. I haven't finished collecting all the tools/chemicals needed for stained glass yet but I enjoy watching your videos. I feel like I've learned a lot before even attempting to make anything.
I recommend if you need glass to go to Stained Glass Of Marin if you can! They have a nice choice of glass and for a decent price unlike Stained glass garden. Marry is the owner of the shop and she is super nice and will teach a class for 45$! I’m from Marin incase I didn’t make that obvious lol!
Love the videos! I have not worked with glass in over 20 years now. I have considered getting back into it. I never did ?canning?, just foil. When I learned from books and video's I was told not to run the cutter over the edge of the glass because it chip the cutter. It makes sense to get a full cut but I've tried to not go over the edge. Good luck with the channel!
Just finished watching, this was a super helpful video!!! Thank you so much! 😮 I haven’t even started yet 😂 just trying to learn more about the ropes before I buy the stuff, and this was AWESOME! Also just great video quality 👍 Please keep it up! Now I’m off to watch all your other videos! 😁
I remember from somewhere running detergent water along the score helps when breaking the cut. We were also taught that the edges to be foiled have to be ground so as not to be shiny. Needs to be dull mat for the foil to stick.
And...the edges to foil must be very, very clean - even a tiny amount of oil residue will cause the foil to fail & not stick and that's incredibly frustrating!
I started a year and a half ago and have made tremendous progress in the hobby very quickly. Your videos were some of the first that I watched before I got a few tools and learned a lot. I'm completely self taught but wish I would have taken a few classes before. Thanks for the inspiration!
Cute baby Great tips I find I never have a problem with my foil if I run each piece under warm water and dry completely So while the piece is warm but dry it sticks and never comes off A little more work though😊 Thanks Patricia
wow!! Fabulous tips, buddy!!! Thanks so much!! I wish I knew how to unfreeze a stripped screw on my electric glass grinder. I want to change the wheel but can't get it off. I wonder if a dremel could be used to smooth the glass edges? Or would a bench grinder work?
Both will work (if you have the right stone or bit) but will result in a lot of glass dust flying around (unless you can find a way of keeping the cut under constantly flowing water). You also risk chipping the edge. I've done both. Not to be recommended...
Nice to see ya back. Glad to see some dude representation into glass... Feels like im the only one haha I use 3-in-1 oil in my cutter, it works great 👍🏻
Were you at Sunset View in El Cerrito/Kensington? I thought I might have recognized my grandparents’ markers behind you. 🌺 Great presentation, by the way!
One thing I've been doing to make old tape stick on a lot better (especially when getting to the end of a roll) is wetting the edge of the glass and immediately wiping it off with a paper towel. I've never had a better stick with new or old tape then when I do that.
Love this video! As a beginner, you think you’re doing it right or at least ok and there are simple tasks to improve just slightly that makes the world a difference. I was waiting for my glass grinder in the beginning during the time of them all being back ordered when Covid started. I became inpatient waiting for the grinder, to be delivered, that I was trying my hand at grinding with the stone and I give you props, man. 😅 That is a tedious task. 🤣 It an experience though! 🌱💚
Haha yea grinding with the stone is not a fun thing to do if you have the grinder right there. But I do use it just for small jobs and it's kinda nice.
I was taught to stop cutting just short of the edge or the glass might chip. And this is the first I have heard of patina being toxic. I have never noticed fumes or had any ill effects from patina.
I was taught to NOT go over the far edge. (I'm not claiming being right because you gave a good reason also.) I think the reason was to not chip the edge. My instructor had us stop at about 1/16 - 1/8" from. Just saying. Liked your vid. I never had an adverse result doing it like I relate - but it's been a while since I was active, and I only made a few panels and a lamp.
Thanks for your video !! Question, do you grind even when your cuts are smooth? Does the grinding help to attach the foil better? Your baby is cute, keep up your great info!!🙏
Thanks Ana! You don't have to grind when the cut is good. But you can grind to help attach the foil if you'd like if that spot is giving you trouble but usually not necessary.
good instruction very usefull ; also I use magnetic unther the glass to hold in place my trng or so like this i am able to place it where it is the best and nothing move when i put solder very easy whit strong magnet from hard disk for exemple thank for demo ; also I use spring cutter like this my pressure is all time ok for minimum maybe max is over sometime not using ouil ??? jack 47 71
when I practice scoring on plain hobby glass i hear the sound but when i am scoring the stained glass I don't hear that cutting sound or hear it very lightly and its throwing me off. Does different types of glass sound different?
No flux makes the solder run smoothly over the copper foil and adhere to it. It is also the more dangerous because of the heat the soldering iron turns it into poisonous vapors thar have been associated with Parkinsons disease and neurological disorders. Definitely need a vapor mask or some ventilation system like a fan blowing the vapors etc. Patina is an acid that reacts with the solder and makes it go black from silver. It doesn't get heated.
I have a problem with the stained glass cross that made I put the copper on it like you showed in one of the videos but my problem is the top and the cross are very lose I cut it out of three pieces of glass. If I can figure out how to send you a picture of it maybe you can tell me what I can do to fix it. Also I have made some of the paper airplanes only thing is that I pant them and have sold about 5 of them.
Today is April 29th, 2023 I miss you! I hope you are having a happy, healthy life and enjoying your beautiful family everyday! 😊 Big fan from Washington State 😃 🌲 🦀
What do you do when you get a bad roll? It's not usually the whole roll that's crap. Get rid of quite a bit of it and keep testing the end until it feels sticky again. The ones he showed are the best brand I believe.
@@StainedGlassDIY I was just thinking because whatever it's lubricating stays lubricated for a really long time with very little oil and it's non-flammable

I would have never guessed when I was younger that I would spend as much time as I do in cemeteries. So peaceful. Best place to walk.
I love it. A good place to reflect and appreciate the day to day.
7:16 Somebody's waking up -- since you're at a cemetery, I was expecting something different 😅
When he said, "Somebody's waking up", I fully thought he meant in the graves.

So did I 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Thank you so much, i’m a beginner from Italy, it is very difficult to even find materials for stained glass here but your vids have helped so so much!

Thanks I improved quite a bit by picking up broken float glass and practicing on it, cause the glass we buy is precious ❤

What is the lead that you use on stained glass windows

Can we use WD 40 as a cutting oil ? Also for smoothing the edges isn’t it better to make the stone wet ?
I was taught to stop cutting just short of the edge or the glass might chip. And this is the first I have heard of patina being toxic. I have never noticed fumes or had any ill effects from patina.
Soaking cotton ball in oil of choice dipping your cutter each time you cut.
Yes a great tip thank you 😀
what if you run into a imperfection while scoring the glass and it stops or jumps?

Yes they sound different in my experience. Thin glass seems to make more noise. Also smooth and wavy are different.
is patina the same thing as flux??

Can i use dremel with diamond bit to grind glass?
Yes but I think it won't be as effective if you're grinding a lot
I did yesterday, the edges will split and not look very nice. But you can write/draw on glass with dremel plus diamond-tip

Ah, Sunset View Cemetery. I lived there 25 years ago when I was going through Mortuary College in SF. 😂
Small world 🌎✌️
I use Parrafine
May I apply this tips for mirrors?
U forgot to mention always cut on the smoother side of the glass
My biggest problem is definitely copper foil. I can’t seem to find a consistent source of new foil. They’re almost always old and not sticking 😢
Best right now seems to be the Edco brand foil. Try them out.
What do you do when you get a bad roll?
It's not usually the whole roll that's crap. Get rid of quite a bit of it and keep testing the end until it feels sticky again.
The ones he showed are the best brand I believe.
What about gun oil?
Never tried but if it's lighter oil then I think it would work. Just don't want to gum up the wheel with thicker oils.
@@StainedGlassDIY I was just thinking because whatever it's lubricating stays lubricated for a really long time with very little oil and it's non-flammable
