Great video. It’s worth noting, that cutting narrow strips, using the square, that normally, the cutter is pulled towards you, as demonstrated. Whereas, cutting shapes, the cutter is generally used away from you - obviously, so that one can have better vision of the shape.

It is my first piece and I totally forgot about the tips you had here! Now I'm ready to go grab some practice glass ...and do some more practicing with the shapes you've shown here!
You are the greatest! Very nice. It is amazing to see the shapes can be made, wow. I want to cut a display protector of smoked glass in the shape of an old CRT tube with curved corners (as in star-wars or other sci-fi) and embed it in a wooden panel. I think I need to make a template first and then cut it around the edges. I want to try it haha, a new challenge! Thanks for the great video!
Is there a maximum thickness that the glass cutters can cut or are there different glass cutters for specific thickness? Also, if you know a manual way of polishing the edge of the glass, can you please create a video for that? Thanks much!!
Generally you can cut glass with a regular glass cutter from 1mm up to 6mm thickness. I would suggest using a professional glass company to cut thicker glass or laminated glass🙂
Thank you so much for this information I have tons of stained glass and tools given to me but had no idea how to use them, now I can do something with them, I have subscribed thank you again
I have a question, if you don't mind. We have a huge antique mirror that we want to cut down. are there special considerations for cutting old thick glass? Thanks so much!
Hi Millie, it is possible to cut mirror on the non silver side, up to a glass thickness of 6mm. Be very careful when cutting large pieces of glass, especially if you have not done this before. It may be wise to take the large mirror to a glazier to have the glass cut down to a new size.
Great video, thanks. I need to cut some pieces of front surface mirror glass to repair a couple of old twin lens reflex cameras. I have a new pencil type cutter. Any suggestions on which side to cut and whether to tap the score? Can’t use pliers or snappers because of the silvered surface. The mirror is about only 1.6 m thick. Had it a week and keep putting it off! Dave
Hi again. I'm trying to cut bracing strips for a small fish tank I own, but I'm having trouble scribing perfectly straight lines. The glass is only 3mm and breaks cleanly, but even if I use a steel straight-edge, the cutter tends to wander and I have to use sideways pressure to keep it on track, which often causes the straight edge to shift position. Poor quality cutter? I'd appreciate any wisdom you might impart. Thank you!
I tried cutting glass for the first time yesterday. I have a cutter from the same manufacturer but the non-reservoir version with the little wooden handle. Six sheets of two millimetre thick glass later, I managed one single successful cut and break. I think I need a lot more practice. 😊
@@DerekHuntArtist my first attempt resulted in a line that was straight for the first 4" and then veered off. How deep does the cutter have to go? thank you for a clear useful video.
Great video, Derek. I am 80 and not too old to learn. Glass cutting will be an asset in restoring cars that I have been doing for 45 years. Is there a way to sand or smooth the cut edge?
Hi Bill, great to hear the video was helpful. You can sand down the edges with a sharpening stone, the same kind of thing we use to sharpen knives. Remember to wear a mask as glass dust is not good for the lungs!
Usually you can cut glass up to 6mm thickness with this method. If you are unsure about cutting glass I suggest taking it to a professional glazier to cut the glass for you.

Thanks for your comment. I would always recommend you get a professional glazier to cut thick glass, especially as it can be difficult to do, and should be made of safety glass.
Hi, I need to cut 1.5 inches off the bottom of a mirror 6 feet wide, so very long thin strip. Should I ball tap all along the entire score before snapping, or just at the end like you demonstrated. I get one shot at a clean cut! thanks.
??? You added more arches to your original arch. Did you do that after you made the straight scores? And if you did, you scored over existing lines. Would that dull the cutter wheel? I LOVE the star!!!!!! I am definitely going to try that😊
@@DerekHuntArtist Thanks for your reply Derek. It didn't answer my question though. What I was trying to ask is why do you oil the tip of the cutter? What does the oil do in the glass cutting process? Does it just lubricate the cutting wheel? Does it create a cleaner cut? Or something else?
@@icepotato2800the oil helps to lubricate the wheel. In medieval times glass cutters had small diamond tips to score the glass, but wheels do a better job. Oil does not affect the glass cutting process or change the surface properties of the cut, it just helps the wheel to spin smoothly 🙂
Hi Erikestrada, for cutting glass you might want to buy a TOYO glass cutter - they are very good ! Have a look on my Amazon shop and you’ll see the ones I recommend🙂
Thank you for an informative video, you make it look so easy. I never thought a star could be done in one piece like that. Derek can I ask, I have come by a bit of older slab/crown glass which I dare not touch. It varies in thickness between 6-8mm, can a normal glass cutter work this? Thank you
Crown glass is actually very difficult to cut because it varies in thickness. Take your time and wear gloves and safety glasses when attempting to cut that type of glass.
Hi Derek, excellent tutorial, many thanks. I have a query re your use of the wider head pliers at approx 08:43 when breaking the curved piece - it appears that the head of the pliers grip across the scoreline in order to break the glass which doesn't quite compute for me. It may be that I'm not observing correctly but I would have though that they would grip just one side of the line in order to do that. Subscribed btw, thanks Dave
If you are using the large breaking pliers, the jaws of the pliers span across the score line and apply even pressure to the top of the glass. The bottom of the pliers apply a pressure directly on the score line, which help to create the neat fracture into two pieces. Thanks so for the subscription!
Am wanting to cut 1/2 inch glass and tried scoring though when trying to tap underneath the score near the edge of the glass with the corner of a hammer head gently it didn't fracture the glass. Should I try using a small metal ball hammer under the scored glass near the edge? I'm worried about the glass shattering so try not to hit it too hard when trying to fracture :-/ Thanks
I would suggest getting a professional glazier to cut 1/2 inch thick glass for you, as it can be potentially hazardous doing it yourself if you’re not accustomed to glass cutting.
I use a pistol grip and that's not how I hold it. I wrap my fingers and thumb around the grip and place my index finger over the top pointing toward the wheel.
