  • While our sailboat, Maverick is on the hard and having a week at the spa, we decided to travel from Rio Dulce, Guatemala to the epic Lake Atitlan. Come along as we try to evade protests and roadblocks to make it safely to our destination.

Great video again guys! You have me really interested in visiting Guatemala. My concern is I do not speak spanish... at all! How difficult is it to travel throughout the country and communicate with locals?

Thanks for watching, Mike and we appreciate your feedback! It's always important to try a learn at least a few phrases to help you greet locals and ask questions, however we have found that many Guatemalan's speak English and if they don't, they will try to find someone nearby that can. The Guatemalan people are so welcoming and helpful, you will find that it's easier than you think to get around with little Spanish. Google Translate is a great tool as well!

If you were to spend just 7 days (that's all I can take off from work right now) in Guatemala what are your must do's?

I would spend a few nights in Antigua for sure. So much to see and do there. If you're an active person, look into hiking a volcano while you're there. Pacaya is an easier, half-day hike and Acatenango is an intense overnight hike. If you leave yourself time you can head down to the Rio Dulce for an entirely different experience on the water. There's tons to do there and many beautiful places to stay. Look into Cemuc Shampay!
