    What it's Like to Live on Lake Atitlán, Guatemala
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    So many people have asked us what it's like living on Lake Atitlán in Guatemala. This video is the first of several we will be uploading to show just that! Lake Atitlan is an incredible place, and to live there is an amazing experience.
    Lake Atitlan has been called the most beautiful lake in the world. Surrounded by steep mountain walls and framed by 3 ancient volcanoes, it has a reputation for being a mystical place. It draws visitors from all over the world.
    It is located in the Guatemalan highlands about 90 miles from Guatemala City and is actually a Caldera from the eruption of an ancient supervolcano. The lake reaches depths of over a 1,000 feet (340 meters), making it the deepest lake in Central America! It's impossible to ignore the towering volcanoes, San Pedro, Toliman, and Atitlan looking over the lake like sentinels. On the slopes of these volcanoes live the remnants of the Maya people. Indigenous communities that seem frozen in time.
    Living on Lake Atitlan is an incredible experience, and one that you will never forget!

    Living on Lake Atitlán is an amazing experience. Hopefully this video gives a glimpse into what it's like. What questions do you have about living in Guatemala?

    • @higherresolution4490
      @higherresolution4490 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Here's a really mundane question that might be too trivial to answer. Do any of these Guatemalan towns have gyms? reasonably equiped gyms? or is that too neurotically Western? BTY, this is an excellent video. Very well done on all accounts. Much appreciation. Love the schools your kids attend.

    • @OurMillionAdventures
      @OurMillionAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@higherresolution4490 I know there are at least three gyms in Panajachel and both seem to be pretty well equipped from what I can see online. I never visited them in person. Do a search for PanaGym and Evolucion Gym. Thanks for watching!

      @@OurMillionAdventures So kind of you! Much appreciated. I hope your family's adventures continue to be just as robust and interesting as what we see in this video. I'll do a search right now. I need such facilities to deal with 2 herniated discs! You provide a great service.

    I LOVED Guatemala, even though I do not speak "a lick" of Spanish (my mission trip was into the rain forest where Spanish wasnt that common anyway). The people were so welcoming. When I walked into a strangers home I didnt feel like a stranger. I felt like more a relative or family. Great people.

    Beautiful video!! Seing your daughters dressed up with traditional guatemalan clothing or as the indigenous people do I can see that you love the culture.. I was born in the highlands(with maya roots)of Guatemala but closed to Quetzaltenango and Huehuetenango the people from those regions speak and dress up differently than Pana and the rest of the towns around lake Atitlan. To me this video is one of the most beautiful that I've seen specially the part when you mentioned why is called " the land of eternal spring" the flowers, the sceneries and the landscape look so beautiful and magic..Thanks for posting an excellent video about Guatemala.

    I love this video, very professional. Let me tell you about Santander street. I lived in Pana in the late 60s and 70s. Santander wasnt at all any commercial, it was full of chalets with very beautiful gardens that would go from beautiful flowers to beautiful fruit trees. But I guess all that was shaded away by commercial local businesses sadly. We didnt call it Santander, but la calle de la escuela, because the only goverment school was there and it is still there. That was the only school in town back then. That school has more than a hundred years being there, it is one of the oldest schools in the country of Guatemala. From that school studied many children that now days are doctors, engineers, teachers, there were so many excellent teachers there that inspired many children that now days they fund their own private schools. There is even a film maker, awarded in Europe, with the movie Ishcanul, showing in Netflix.

      @@bingoshadingo4263 poverty amongst the indigenous population, although that has improved in the last year when I went back. There are other societal issues but these aren't confined to the Lake, they happen in many places across the world and include domestic violence, alcoholism, racism, corruption, lack of educational opportunities and women's rights.

    I really liked this episode. I am taken back by how much the information through your VO's add to the quality of the episode. I am left wanting to watch more because of all the information being thrown at me. What camera, lens, and mic are you using for most of your shots? Do you ever use the GoPro for any talking selfie shots?

    • @OurMillionAdventures
      @OurMillionAdventures  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Dan! Glad you liked it! As for your question about cameras, we use all sorts of cameras, from my cell phone, to the sony A6000. I guess you could call that our "real camera". Usually I've got a 55-210 zoom lens on it. I use it pretty much exclusively for the B-roll shots. I usually use the goPro hero 5 for narration and time lapse shots. I record narration on my phone, though I'd love to get a better audio recorder. Honestly we are pretty low budget...if you check out our video "How to travel Vlog - The Gear" you can see what we use.

    Lake Atitlan seems very similar to Lake Chapala and Ajijiic in Mexico. Can you share some light on differences like long term living cost and anything else ? Thx...love your videos !

    • @OurMillionAdventures
      @OurMillionAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What sorts of specifics are you looking for? Living costs are going to vary a lot depending on what transportation you use and where you live. For example the first time we went down we flew and stayed in a condo outside of town. This was a mistake because we spent a lot of money on transportation every day. Tuk tuks don't cost that much but it adds up. The second time we went we drove our car down and stayed right in Pana. We could walk to the market and stores. Where you stay is also going to dramatically have an affect on things like wifi and the like. For example the first time we were there we had power outages (scheduled) fairly often, but because the condo we were in was part of a hotel they still had power, whilst residences everywhere else did not. So the short of it is... depends on where you will be around the lake and where even within the city you are planning to be 😉

    • @OurMillionAdventures
      @OurMillionAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the towns around the lake are going to be fairly touristy, but the smaller ones won't be as much so as panajachel. To really get a sense of how the people live you'd need to travel away from the tourist centers. I've heard good things about San Marcos.

  • @24hrstolive27
    @24hrstolive27 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What is cost of living there for 2 people? And can I ask why you chose there instead of other locations with good weather

    • @OurMillionAdventures
      @OurMillionAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cost of living really depends on what you are looking for. You can find some nice houses and apartments but prices will vary with amenities and time of year as there are higher prices around celebrations. Pana is small so there are not a ton of options either. We've always been able to negotiate what we thought were fair prices but I couldn't really tell you what it'd be for two. The quetzal fluctuates in exchange rate with the US dollar quiete a bit is another factor. It was very low while we were there, so our dollar went further. Right now it is going up. As for why we chose to go, we love the Latin America culture and Lake Atitlan is also an expat hub. It was a good place to be immersed in the culture, language, and nature while also having other people around who spoke English.

  • @colinandmeg
    @colinandmeg ปีที่แล้ว

    What village would you recommend living in for a longer period?

    • @OurMillionAdventures
      @OurMillionAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      That really depends on what you are looking for and what you need. For example if you require internet you will have the best access in Pana or San Pedro. Each community around the lake has a different vibe. Pana has the most resources and is most accessible, but you will have a more tranquil experience in one of the smaller towns. You can of course live in one place and get around by boat, but that can get expensive and inconvenient depending on your needs. How much adventure are you looking for, and how long would you be staying?

      Ancient step mining. It's all over the world. A lot of rice terraces and tea fields are built on these. But you won't hear that in history class!

      Really depends on where you stay. Pana is pretty small and so there tend not to be a lot of options. Our first stay we booked last minute and so we were paying over 1000 a month for a two bed one bath, fully furnished, but it also had a pool. We just booked another place for this next year that is about 700 a month, for 5 bed 4 bath. Most people will be willing to work with you depending on your needs. Prices also change seasonally.

    Check out toilets and showers and quality of drinking water wherever you go at Lake Atitlan and anywhere else in the 3rd world. Think about it. Where do you suppose toilets empty its waste, and where does the drinking water come from. Just go there and be careful, and check out and search for facts.

    Stay away from con artists like Andy Graham. He wants you to donate to HIM to help people in Africa, or to invest in building facilities for tourists that will never be built. He seems like a nice guy; con artists and even major drug dealers are very likeable people, and I've know some of them personally in a law enforcement agency.
