    This is the most helpful video yet. Particulary the part where we "don't have to be creative yet" I always feel like I'm not doing enough to make a campaign unique and I just get frustrated and don't finish it! I really think starting with the basics will help me to finish my first homebrew adventure.

    For anyone that doesn't know, there's a thing between sand boxes and railroads, they're roads.

      Clever! Also I get why people dread railroads, but I like to think that on-rails campaigns can be great if done carefully. I mean, rollercoasters are on rails and you dont see people complaining :P.

      @@thefourthcrow5627 neither does a planned campaign. Not if you choose to get in. I ask my GM if they have a big elaborate plot planned that they really wanna get to, and if they do I know what I'm up for

      @@kaleidoslug7777 Ya. thats not what people are complaining about when they are being "railroaded" . What their complaining about is that they lack agency. The complaint isn't the presence of a plan.

    The Alchemist kidnaps the villagers, taking them back to the castle. There he/she/they use the blood of an ancient vampire, injecting it into the villagers, turning them into hybrid vampires.
    As always, a great and informative video. Thank you for taking the time to put this together for us.

    12:50 constructs might be an interesting topic on nobility. Can on override his programming to act in a noble way? Is programmed nobility truly nobility? These are two topics that jump to mind that might be interesting to explore

    Using this now for an adventure tomorrow. Wish me luck!
    UPDATE: Used it to build this great adventure and my players took a proverbial 90 degree turn, and I quickly filled out a new "5 steps" adventure in about 25 minutes while just describing the scene and introducing a few new NPCs. Still managed to put together a 5 step adventure (I had a few seeds in my back pocket) and it has gone off great. Might be the best adventure of the campaign yet!

    What are some tips for non-combat characters? For example, we've recently started working on a campaign for the Witcher RPG and it includes classes like Craftsman, Doctor, and Merchant. How do we include non-combat characters in grandiose campaigns like this?

    In many computer games such as Witcher and Dragon Age you have a big over-arcing main plot and then a bunch of side-plots allowing players to choose to work on the main plot or to change the theme a bit by taking on a side-plot.
    Do you think the same thing would work in an RPG with multiple players or would it just become messy and confusing?

      Check out the prewritten campaign Tomb of Annihilation that's essentially how I am running it lol.

      That's how I always run bigger campaigns. There are master plots upon master plots, various layers at which the fate of the universe is contested. And it will take a lot of time until the heroes are ready to face the grandest of threats.
      As long as the side quests aren't just filler, put there only to give the players something to do, it should work

    One pestering question I've got- probably posed already somewhere...
    What difference in the adventure types is delivering and collecting?
    In both scenarios, you are going to location to bring back an item to another location.
    Am I wrong in thinking so?

      I think you don't need to bring Items anywhere in a Collecting.
      Otherwise it is a Collecting-Delivering hybrid.
      It seems that even if you need to Destroy the Item it's just Collecting.

    18:25 This sounds like railroading.
    What happens to the original plot? Easy. The vampire keeps doing vampire things and working towards their vampire goals. The PCs might hear rumors about these goings on later, or not. If the PCs ever return to that place, they may find one of the following outcomes.
    Maybe another group has come along and defeated the vampire. They have received all the glory, treasure and rewards. Maybe the vampire is just much closer to achieving its goal. Or maybe, the vampire has achieved their goal and is now much more powerful. It is now equal to or more powerful than the PCs because,
    Someone wants something very badly and is having No difficulty getting it.
    There are benefits and consequences to every choice you (the PCs) make.
    Grab your ketchup and crunch away.

    I just start playing and then figure out what the main plot is going to be after the first few sessions. It's usually some one/thing they think they have killed. Then they become the plot and I build from there. Things I just drop in for flavour at the time, then can become integrated into the plot, as you have spoken off before. Once I'm 4 Sessions in, then the plot starts to develop and I have at the very least what the end game is.

    29:06 I dislike “making it personal “ because usuallyit implies the GM carelessly killing NPCs from your background or throwing away your characters downtime plans for the only sake of starting the adventure. I remember the first time I made a character with an actual family instead of the lone wolf that walks around the word, the GM needed to introduce another player’s character after his last one died, and he made a priest focused on banning undeads, so the GM called me over for a “solo game” where my character would visit his family (my character adventured so he could pay for their sustaining), and when I arrived there everyone was dead. “Well, ok, my character had lost his wifeduring the plague, lost his farm during the locust swarm and sacrificed his morals becoming a criminal just so he could sustain his baby son, his only remaining anchor to sanity, after his son got old enough to work for himself, my character decided to repent for his life as a criminal by becoming an adventure and helping others, but, above all, he did so so that his son could be proud he have had a good father, not ashamed to be the son of a bandolier, then when I get home, this single anchor to my character’s sanity died while he was away, adventuring, with not a chance for him to intervene? Fair well, my character goes crying into the woods and kills himself, for the sole reason he did everything he did from becoming a Rogue to becoming an Adventure to hanging on upon life just died and he wasn’t even there to try and stop it.” Then the GM goes “no, you can’t do that, can’t you at least explore the scene?” All because my character’s son would have turned into avampire, so he could introduce the new character of the other player (that was waiting on the other room for an apropreitely dramatic entrance) into the group. The priest was worse than an inquisitorial madlad and ended up killing my character’s son anyway,despite being given by the GM a way to turn him backinto human before the story started (possibily because Ikilled hislast character after he betrayed the group, despite I allowing him to go,which he refused because he just had to kill some NPC my character was investing on instead of fucking flee as I had allowed him to), well, great way to stimulate your players into maki g actual background, murder the important characters in their background pfscreen to make the plothook personal. For the first 4 times I made a family for my character this happened, either they were killed, or corrupted, or were not how I described them, all for the sake of “making plot hooks personal”, so I just stopped making family for my characters. At least alieve. I currently have a character whose mother’s ghost follow him around, and by the way the questions the GM made about her, I’m sure she will just die at some point for some half assed dramatic moment where she “sacrifices her self to save her son” bullshit instead of letting the story develop naturally. God, I hate when GM’s try to “make the plot hook personal” by screwing up with the players. Well, there is 1 GM I know that actually makes “plot hooks personal” without just screwing with the characters, he makes a figure of authority ask them with a mix of promissing rewards and public shame if they refuse the request of such a high figure, there you have it, the players get some rewards if they complete the mission, and get punished, but not game breackingly punished if they fail

    Right around 28:00 when "village has lots of slaves":
    Yah, um, slavery is Evil. Full stop. That's not me projecting my modern morals onto some fantasy setting, that is the proper interpretation of Good / Evil in a fantasy setting which has concepts like alignment.
    D&D 3.5 "Book of Vile Darkness" (because it's the source book I have at hand), Chapter 1, "Evil Acts", "Using Others for Personal Gain" and "Bullying and Cowing Innocents".
    Slavery Is Evil, and any party walking into a village with "lots of slaves" should take that as a huge flashing sign. DM's who have non-Evil regions which tolerate any significant slavery Are Doing It Wrong.
    The alternative is that you aren't using "The Objective Approach" (again, see "Book of Vile Deeds"), and the game system itself is heavily skewed towards the objective approach. How can spells like Detect Evil and Protection From Evil work without objective Evil? "Well, the Vampire doesn't THINK he's Evil, so your Detect Evil spell doesn't detect him, and your Protection From Evil spell does not effect him." which if course is utter nonsense.
