Because I'm completely obnoxious when I know things: Most of the half-pans you find that are domed when you get them are made with a completely different process than the flat ones. The domed ones are thickened and extruded into a long tube shape that's cut by machine into the size of a half pan. (When it dries completely, it shrinks, which is why you'll often see space around the main body of the pan and/or they fall out of the pans so easily or are glued into the pans.) The hand-poured ones, though -- those dry flat, because the paint is fluid when it's put in the pans. It's self-leveling, and usually has to be topped off once or twice to be completely full at the time of pouring. They'll sometimes be smaller than that when they get to you, because more of the water has evaporated since they were poured. They have roughly the same amount of pigment in them (or more!) than the extruded ones; they're just hand vs. machine made. I really should join some sort of art trivia league. :D :D :D
I work at Michaels and I can tell you that yes we are getting rid of a lot of stuff. The art isles are getting smaller and smaller and smaller not to mentioned the prices have shot up. I so wish I had a Blicks around me. Now that’s a real art store lol and it’s much cheaper! P.s I have that same Da Vinci palette and I LOVE IT!
I lived a day trip away from a Jerrys Artarama and a Blick up until this past Christmas when I moved. I have a couple college grade mini art supply stores near me but not as fruitful as blick/jerrys. So online shopping it is for me.
Great video. I love low end art supplies. I love to try them out, rate them in my art pad, try to make them work. It's fun. These are the kinds of products folks used to use in the cheap art challenge. I also have my collection of "the good stuff" to compare them too and of course, there is no comparison.
It is funny how bad those jelly gauche supplies are but it’s also sad because for people who don’t know what gauche is - they buy these and then either hate gauche forever or they think that they, the artist, are failing. 😢😢
I'm all for a good budget supply but yes. I did better with the regular cheap gouache from popshelf than these ones. The miya himi set aren't that expensive to justify these.
The Davinci half-pan set is curated by Denise Soden, another TH-camr who is a phenomenal artist; she paints primarily paints wildlife and this palette is designed with her style in mind. One of the colors she designed is included in this palette.
I was going to comment that at least the container might work for gouache but I realized considering the paint quality the container is not as good either 😅😅 for the watercolor I think they hand pour the paint into the pans and thats why they look different, the palette and colors you got look so pretty and nice I can't wait to see what you will paint with them 🥰
Popshelf and 5below are fun stores to look around. The products are cheap but as long as you're expecting that it's OK. Sometimes they have brand name hygiene items and make up and ofcourse if you just need seasonal decor without spending a fortune its fine.
With a lot of effort you can get the 5 below jelly gouache to work. I was laughing at how ridiculously bad it was but im stubborn. I thought it was like trying to paint with really bad finger paints but i managed to paint some flowers in vases with it after lots of effort. Ill never buy it again though i really like the case and the caps. The paint is crap. Nice video ❤
Do you have any thoughts on the Gansai Tambi Art Noveau set? As for that "jelly gouache" the container is cuter than the miya himi tho 😂From what you were saying, it reminded me of those cheap "poster paints" that we got when we were kids. I now guess that they were diluted acrylic mixed with something like talc
I do own the Art Nouveau set th-cam.com/video/MP7MUspk8HI/w-d-xo.html oddly enough I've mostly used the blues so far. I've been mixing the blues with the blue watercolors of the Boku Undo pale set for backgrounds. I think I like the set just fine its just after using the Boku Undo, I just wish the gansai tambi had the same milky texture and it would be the perfect set.
Bummer how the 5 below paints didn't even work out a little bit. I bought the set knowing they would be crap, but couldn't resist. I wonder how they would be if you mixed them with himi guache. I'm gonny try and mix it with white himi guache and see how they go. Your previous himi drawings came out great!
The domed paints are done in a machine andcut to fit in pans (extruded) the fat type are hand poured, I always think the hand poured are much better quality AND don't fall out of the pans
I've been trying to search back through your older videos to find the name of those pastel Japanese watercolors, but I haven't found you mention their name. I wish you would mention the name or link to them so I could find them, thank you.
You're either looking for the kusakabe macaron set or the boku undo pale set m.aliexpress.us/item/3256804586944449.html?gatewayAdapt=gloPc2usaMsite4itemAdapt www.paperinkarts.com/Bok-15429.html
TBH I knew the gouache would not be good when I saw it on the shelf. But then I decided to get because of its size and portability. I just emptied out the shitty paint and refilled it with actual gouache. Better travel palette than the bigger HIMI one. 😂
Yeah if the "gouache" isn't reactivating then it has to be acrylics, which ain't great 'cause there's no way that container is gonna be air tight, so once the paints are dry they're gonna be unusable, good god
This is more like the Artist Loft "gouache," which isn't gouache. The Artist Loft is more like opaque acrylic, but with a gloppy, chalky feel. Awful. I bought some on clearance because I thought it would be like the Miya tubes which are about as good as their jelly cups. Nope, it was like bad glue.

What kind of stuff are you getting rid of at Michael’s?
I bought the gouache set from 5 below, thinking of cleaning out the paint and filling it with my winsor and Newton and holbein gouache
That was a useful review. Thank yoy

@lizzelloart I've had the himi for over a year and love them and only had to add a bit of water twice, perhaps they are better quality
@@sueallen952 that’s good to know! Ty

Good on her for curating a good wildlife palette for sure then lol.
your art style is so cute and whimsical! I love it!
Thanks 😊
I just added cornstarch to mine and I love it
Those da Vinci colors are so pretty, and just found your channel *hits subscribe button*

5 below just sounds like a dangerous stotre3 to go in for one thing and then come out with a whole trolley full of stuff 😝

Ugh, I got the Five Below gauche yesterday 😢. Thank you for your review on them.

I was gonna buy that gelly gouache and decided to put it back cause I thought there is noooo way this could be any good. I'm glad I went with my gut.
Could you dump the paint that in it and use the containers for other paint to store in for the five below one?
May want to still keep the gouache cups themselves but yes you could
Which tan paper sketch book are you using there?
Stillman and birns beige toned
Hi Ive got sennelier, schminke, prima marketing van gough and loads of others and they are all flat on the top

@@Dausypooi see! Thanks for the insight! Ive been debating to myself over the art noveau set for months lol
Listen to no one, you have to have the Care Bear Mug😆 Its awesome. Nice watercolor's by Davinci I have not used that brand before
Thank you !!!

At least the container is worth it, with the separate lids…. Totally cute, I’d buy them for that alone! But I’m not American 😢
I have the same cheap gouache and it worked out for me it’s pretty good and easy to work with idk

Travel gouache kit is the only reason to get this set.
I purchased two boxes of gouache. Looked like mini Himi. Oh well

Those Da Vinci paints look so nice! Maybe at some point I’ll own big girl sets like those 😂 but wow, those fake gouache paints are hilariously bad.
Wow, that is quite spectacularly not gouache. Wasn’t expecting that.

Artist loft is one brand I havent tried anything from lol. Didn't know they had gouache and I'm not surprised by the results.
