Your mom’s style blended with your ideas makes me think of my style, elegant and whimsical. I actually, purposefully, collected some second-hand cherry dining pieces when I was 30. Dreaming up of how I might pair it in a when I move, maybe with a touch more modernity. We’ll see! Thanks for the ideas!

This is stunning! I'm in my 20s trying to find my style for my first home, and this really resonates with me. It's wonderful to see traditional furniture look so stylish! I love my grandma's china cabinet and dark cherry wood, but was wrestling with how to make it look put together and more current. Thank you for the inspiration!
“This room is meant for you and not necessarily everyone else”. So glad you said that because the dark walls were making me anxious and uncomfortable. But I love color. I’m currently having my living room made over and the interior designer sensed a bohemian vibe from me so she is introducing many colors to my completely white room. Thank goodness she’s introducing it through the accessories and not the walls. This video taught me that I can handle color but in small dosage. Good to know. Thank you.
I'm working with another client who had the same reaction! She chose white walls for one room and color for two other rooms. It looks fabulous! Without even touching the furniture, you managed to update it. I recently read that stained, rather than painted and distressed wood, is making a comeback. I guess if you wait long enough it all comes full circle. I love the relationship that you have with your mother. I hope that you always stay so close.
That's so true about trends! Surrounding yourself with things you truly love is always the best route! My mom is my absolute best friend. I get teary eyed thinking about how grateful I am to have her so close after being so far away for so long!

This is my favorite video of yours! I have and will always love mahogany and cherry furniture. We inherited my inlaw’s three peice mahogany dining furniture and we could not be more thrilled! It was beautiful at Christmas. We are going from fire engine red to a really dark teal. I’m so glad you finished it in semi gloss because I had to buy satin at Sherwin aWilliams to get the color I wanted? I was nervous about that. I’m also getting a Chrystal chandelier.
Love the bar cart and chandelier. I have cherry dining furniture that belonged to my parents. I have updated the look but had to store the china cabinet after we downsized. Great job!

Very nicely done. This looks lovely but the takeaway here is 3 basic swaps: paint color, new side chairs, and a glam light fixture. Can you revisit a similar situation where you go into more detail; choosing window treatments, lighting, accessories, and other color palettes… Not everyone is going to be comfortable with a dark, bold blue. In 2023 many still have these traditional cherry furnishings, and an adjoining living room with similar issues. Thank you V.

Galina M I had planned to do more behind the scenes process on this one but omg you wouldn’t believe the technical difficulties I had with my equipment 🤦🏽♀️ I’ll definitely try to do more of that in the future but you picked up on exactly why that room needed to be dark. We also tried to bring balance with a few modern/clean lined items to help it feel current. The art was also purposely modern

I love how this turned out! I have an heirloom dining room set that is very similar! I even found the original receipt! I hate the uncomfortable chairs and dark wood. So I love what you did with your mom's. Btw you two look more like sisters. 👍🎃🍂🍁

I love my cherry and mahogany furniture.....I have some painted pieces as well. My take on modernizing is to go completely neutral scheme with rustic elements and decor that speaks to a country French feel but in a more minimalist way....

Just went to world market web site to look at chairs ready to buy them then I libra indecision takes over! my dining room is Georgian green Ben Moore with cream wainscoting . Would love those blue walls but not sure if I’m ready or have time to pull the trigger . Do you think it’s best to paint entire dining room top to bottom?
If i dont ,Do you think the grey chairs would still work? I love all the colors even blue chairs . So excited with what you did !! The cream could be pretty but I would have to scotch guard I guess. I have only furniture in dining room no soft finishes. Partly because of a front porch that does not allow much light but I need something and I have a dog that loves carpets if you know what I mean . I would have to close the room off. Help !
That's a gorgeous green! I would recommend the linen color for those chairs with your cream wainscoting: rstyle.me/+CUuVpYu9q66oukVO99fUQw I would scotch guard them and if you have young guests you could always throw a soft cuddly blanket on the chair which will make them extra cozy but add a barrier. Mom and I agreed that these chairs are also the kind that could be wiped clean easily because she is SUPER funny about stuff that like too. Can't wait to hear what you do! Just some clipped branches from the garden in a vase makes great decor when you don't have a lot in there! xx

This post was as if you made it for me. I have the cherry dining furniture, my dining room is laid out exactly as your mother's is (same entry into the room, same window placement), and, yes, I want to keep my cherry furniture because it is special to me and I do still like it. However, I found myself thinking I should replace my furniture with something more modern or paint the wood to look more updated. I couldn't do it and I realized it was because I actually like it and it was only "peer-pressure" to change it. After I made peace with keeping it and embracing the style that I knew was me, I moved on and did replace my stodgy chandelier with one that is snazzier and I love it. That change alone makes the room feel caught up with the rest of my home. I love the bar cart and the plant on either side of the china cabinet, the art you chose for the walls and the wall color. Oh, the large table centerpiece is striking and something I want to copy. You have given me so many good ideas - I really love the chair replacements. They make such a difference and keep the room from being too formal and stiff. That will be next on my list. I imagine there are loads of people who will appreciate seeing this makeover. Thank you and your mom.

Depending on the wood, you could potentially think about painting the table or the chairs, but if you like the wood, go for a cabinet or sideboard in a different color if you want to add a bit of interest! xx

Stunning - Looks wonderful and updated. I have a formal dining set also (Ethan Allen) and never use the dining room any longer. Sad to hear china cabinets are going away, but understand as we just sold our china set (12 plate settings and all pieces) and crystal. No one even wants that anymore! ANYWAY, also have to comment how much you resemble your mother and even grandmother, in looks and ++ personality. Thanks for all you do, Valentina. And, my regards....

Love that lamp put in my shopping cart however I need to measure before I purchase . Can you tell me what entry way lamp you would coordinate with this light fixture ? I have a smaller entry which currently has a petite sort of bronze gold chandelier with crystals.
How would you brighten the china cabinet without using glass ware I want mine to have things that stand out in the shelves any site recommendations to style it.
I asked my mom if she wanted books and more of a library feel, but this was her personal taste. The cabinet is fair game for anything that will help you enjoy and live in your space! Try vases, books, accessories, baskets... so many options! xx
I adore old china cabinets, but I imagine seeing them go into a dressing room to display shoes and hide stuff beneath. The problem with most china cabinets would be size, especially with the size of most dinning rooms. I love mixing antiques with modern spaces and couches.

Cherry furniture is elegant and classy, as are the china cabinets. Not everyone wants to have a formal dinner on what looks like a barnyard picnic table. I got rid of my "everyday" dishes and use white bone China on the daily. It's great in the dishwasher and very durable. Life is short, why save the good stuff for once a year?? Sometimes I use crystal highballs and wine goblets for my juice or soda. All that farmhouse decor is basic; trendy and temporary. I know what a cup is I don't need Rae Dunn to label each of my items; plate, cup, saucer. My only thing is this, if you're gonna have it, use it.. that includes a formal dining room. If not get rid of it and replace with a sitting room or something informal and more useful. Don't waste precious space on collecting dust.
My sentiments exactly! What are we saving it for? I’ve guarded my nice stuff for decades. Time to toss the everyday junk and set out and use the nice things!
@@enna4986 yes ma’am! Since writing this comment I’ve gotten rid of all my glassware and put all the crystal in my cabinets. I use crystal biscuit jars I had in my China cabinet as planters, and water them with my crystal pitchers. I think I will use the decanters for soap, bubble bath, and mouthwash next. When I die I don’t want any of my “new” stuff getting donated to Goodwill. Lol I’m gonna try and use it all!
Love the way it came out. Dark colors scare me because I feel like they make rooms look smaller , and not light and bright.
Deme Nicole. Some people just aren’t dark room kind of people but dark colors have a bad rap. They make a space feel cocoon like and cozy and, like in my mom’s case, very glamorous. It’s not for everyone but she loves it!

I gave my huge china cabinet away as it took too much wall for us. I kept the table and chairs and 2 credenzas but they get no use. I like your mom's dining room but here we've become too casual. My grown children prefer the kitchen to eat instead! sigh!
